Original blind-stamped green publisher's cloth with spines elaborately decorated in gilt. First "Cheap" Edition first issue from the first and most important collected works of Dickens with in this case a 2pp new introduction and a specially commissioned new frontispiece. Begun in 1847 with works already published Dickens added further titles as he went along. Most were published by Chapman & Hall however this particular title belonged to Bradbury & Evans yet both provided a book nearly identical in design. Despite being called "cheap" Dickens made sure that these volumes were just as high quality in texture and ornamentation as his first editions; there are 17 volumes in total all are rarely seen in fine condition. A FINE copy quite rare in this splendid condition spine a trifle browned as almost always with this olive-green cloth trifling wear to the extremities armorial bookplate of Henry Smith and blind-stamp of W. With Two Original Ink Drawings for the First Edition DICKENS Charles. BROWNE Hablot Knight illustrator. SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE binder. Dombey and Son. London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. First edition in book form. Octavo 5 1/4 x 8 3/16 inches; 134 x 208 mm. v-xiv1 errata 1 blank 1-624 pp. With engraved frontispiece engraved title-page and thirty-eight plates. Also with two original pen-and-ink drawing by Browne inserted each signed "Phiz." The original drawings are inserted facing their respective plates page 40 "The Christening Party" and page 539 "Mr. Carker in his Hour of Triumph." This second plate is titled in manuscript at the bottom. Each drawing is on a sheet of onion skin measuring 138 x 110 mm and then inlaid into a larger sheet to match the size of the other leaves. Original drawings for first editions of Dickens books are extremely rare. The original front wrapper for part ix bound in at the end. Without the half-title and list of plates. Full olive morocco bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Boards decoratively stamped in black. Gilt lettering on the spine. Gilt ruled dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. With two previous owner's bookplates on front pastedown "Kenyon Starling" and "Self". Spine lightly sunned. A near fine copy. Hablot Knight Browne was born on July 12 1815 to a family descended from Huguenot refugees who had settled in East Anglia England in the seventeenth century. The ninth son and thirteenth of their fourteen children he was christened Hablot in memory of a French officer to whom one of his sisters had been engaged and who had been killed at Waterloo a month before the artist was born. Upon leaving school Browne became an apprentice with the engraver Finden where he received a standard grounding in draughtsmanship copying and drawing. In 1836 he became the third and final illustrator for the first edition of Charles Dickensís Pickwick Papers and was to continue to illustrate most of the major novels for Dickens through the 1859 A Tale of Two Cities. London: Chapman and Hall. Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. Later edition in one volume of one of Mr. Dickens' most-loved works. Formerly property of a library the sole indicator of which is an accession slip pasted to the front pastedown. In the so-called 'Charles Dickens Edition' with full green cloth-covered boards with black decorations and lettering titling on spine in gilt. Interior bears 8 b&w engravings by 'Phiz' pseudonym of Hablot Knight Browne. Volume is slightly loose but intact with rubbed cover extremities especially at spine ends. Interior with much foxing; prev. owner's penciling at front free endpaper. Undated edition but likely published ca 1860-1880. --- Dombey and Son was first published in serial form in 1846-48. A very convoluted story but centered around the wealthy Mr. Dombey and the raising of his heir. ; Ex-Library; 12mo 7" - 7�" tall; 543 pages . Chapman and Hall hardcover

Designed by Joseph Blumenthal. Bound in rose-red buckram with paper labels on spines. 798 numbered pp. in all - Volume 1: xvi 396 pp. Volume 2: 402 pp.begins with page number 397. Very mild fading to spines. Small bookstore sticker on rear pastedown in Volume 2; the same volume has a stray mark on fore-edge of text block. One page has some light stray marks in margin - otherwise remarkably clean with no names or other marks. Tightly bound and housed in a Very Good publisher's box that is rubbed on top but very solid with no cracks splits or marks. Signed by Illustrator. Limited Edition. Cloth.
