Plates are generally clean some peripheral foxing vignette title-page slightly more than others. Contains most first issue points as noted in Smith 8; including Captain Cuttle's hook on his left hand in vignette title-page and plate facing p.238. This copy was bound from the original parts with stab holes easily identified. This Dickens title also contains the first example of a so-called dark plate and is found on p.547. This is also the first time that Browne created some horizontal illustrations for a Dickens work five appear in Dombey and Son. Originally appeared in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts from October 1846-April 1848. The book form was first published on April 12 1848. 624pp. First English Edition. Black morocco label in the third compartment reading: Charles Dickens. Small red morocco label at tail of spine bearing publication date: 1848. Gilt-tooled ornamentation in the other four compartments. Gilt-ruled borders and corner rosettes on both boards. Gilt-rolled ornamentation on edges of both boards with gilt-tooled ornamentation continuing on the turn-ins. All page edges gilt. Grey endpapers with small binder's stamp on verso of front free endpaper. No half title. First edition points include: in the added engraved title page vignette Capt. Cuttle's hook is on his left arm; on p. xv there is no page entry for the frontispiece and vignette nor are there quotation marks around "the Party" in the second entry; on p. 14 ten lines up "aint" has no apostrophe; on p. 26 line 11 has "fidgetty"; on p. 40 "shewed" and "shew" are found for "showed" and "show"; and on p. 582 the last line has no period. An early issue with a two-line errata listing following the list of plates and with the word "Captain" spelled "Capatin" on the last line of page 324. Smith I:8. ‎Bradbury & Evans. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1848. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. The book is elegantly rebound by the nineteenth-century English bookbinder Charles Worsfold. "Bound by Worsfold" is stamped on the top corner of the front free endpaper. The binding is 3/4 red leather with five raised bands on the spine and gilt lettering and gilt tooling please see image #1 below. The endpapers are marbled to match the marbling of the boards. There are two bookplates on the front endpapers. One of them indicates that this book was awarded to a student by "St. Paul's School" in 1934 and that school's seal is on the front board in gilt. And there ia a former-owner's bookplate on the front endpaper.; B&W Illustrations; 8vo; 624 pages; HC original leather spine and marbled boards and end papers. Like many Dickens novels this was first published in serial form over a period of about three years; the book offered here is the true first English book edition with "1848" on both the title page and halftitle page and "1848" also is stamped in gilt on the spine . This set agrees with Hatton and Cleaver's description except that in part 11 there is no ad for Letts & Son and the ad for Kaye's Pills in part 12 varies slightly from the one described by Hatton & Cleaver. Two of the three misprints noted by Hatton & Cleaver are present: part 11 page 324 "Capitan" for "Captain"; part 14 page 426 "if" is not present; on page 431 the page number is present in Hatton & Cleaver's earliest issue the number is omitted. Plates foxed - as seems inevitable - some minor paper repairs to the corners of a few spines; a few wrappers slightly soiled and smudged; overall in very nice condition as issued. 20 parts in 19 as issued 8vo original pictorial blue wrappers. 40 plates. A fine set of Dombey and Son in original parts completely unsophisticated as evidenced by the ink signature on each front wrapper of a contemporary reader Stephen Blair. Dickens novels in parts with the evidence of the contemporary ownership on each wrapper are rare and such provenance is virtually the only way to establish that a set has not been sophisticated "married" or "made up.". <br/><br/> London: Bradbury and Evans, 1846-48 unknown‎

Gilt title embossed on morocco spine insert elaborate and delicate gilt floral decoration on four raised bands and two additional bands at head and foot of spine. Boards and leather are rubbed at extremities with discolored spot on spine where a label may have once been affixed. Bookplate of Charles Hasketh Knowlys on front pastedown. . Contents are as described in Smith pp 70-73 for the first state except that the two "Internal Flaws" listed by Smith as occurring in the Table of Contents have been corrected. The other errors are present for example the hook is on Captain Cuttle's left arm. The book includes 38 plates frontispiece and vignette title page illustrated by H. K. Browne Phiz. It also includes the four extra plates with tissue guards full-page drawings of Edith Little Paul Florence and Alice. Dickens' errata sheet is bound in after page xvi and is eight lines long describing six entries. Book is in excellent condition with tight and attractive binding. As is common for this title the illustrations and sometimes their versos and facing pages are foxed. Usually but not always foxing is limited to the margins of the illustrations. Eight line errata leaf pp xvii-xviii. 12 line errata slip tipped in after title leaf. Frontispiece eng raved title and 38 other plates inserted complete by Hablot K. Brown "Phiz". No tissue guards. Some old cloth repairs to spine tips resewn new endpapers now tanned. Cloth split to front joint but joint firm; some wear to lower edges of cov ers and to outer corners. Yellowing and occasional foxing to text with occasional tan spots to text margins; plates darkened and foxed at edges; frontispiece and illustrated title foxed; spine and margins of covers darkened to brown; else a VG copy tight in the binding. This copy was not bound from the parts no stab holes to inner margins. It has 27 of the 39 main errors listed in Smith but "Captain" p. 324 last word is correctly spelled and "if" is present on p. 426 line 9. The bindi ng varies from the two described by Smith. It closely resembles Smith's "binding variant" but it has no gilt date at foot of spine and "Charles Dickens" is spelled out in full on the spine. Of note in the history of book illustration is the first p ublished example of the "dark plate" process at p. 547. Smith I.8; Podeschi A103; Eckel pp 74-76. First Edition. Hardcover.
