Sawyer their gilt monogram to rear pastedown spine lettered in gilt gilt turn-ins blue endpapers top edge gilt. Original cloth bound in at rear. Frontispiece and other illustrations within text by Cruikshank and others. Spine lightly darkened with very minor rubbing at extremities. A near-fine copy. First edition. The book was once often accepted to be by Dickens and indeed the binding here states Dickens as the author. However this is a fallacy - Dickens had originally agreed to write this book at the request of the publisher but negotiations were cancelled. As Eckel notes "This is the third of the books illustrated by George Cruikshank with which Dickens' name has been associated. There appears to be absolutely no reason for this connection". London.: Chapman & Hall. 1868. Brown half calf leather and purple stippled cloth all edges marbled but variably faded away from slightly to almost completely all cnrs slightly bumped but 95% entire. Original spines EACH with 4 raised bands obliquely diced; 3 ornate gold panels plus one panel with " DICKENS' WORKS" on burgundy skivers of which 2 are slightly chipped plus one panel with gold embossed books' titles directly onto spines. Titles are all easily legible and mostly bright with v occasional letter rubbed. Marbled end-papers. 525pp. All works bar one have a frontis plus 7 woodcut plates. Vols containing 2 works therefore have 16 illustrations. All illustrations complete no tissue guards. Most volumes have brown water staining to top & fore margins extending some way into the text all pages browned and starting to be brittle but only a little dirt foxing. Specific variations listed by the above order in which books were orig printed: #1 497pp . # 3 only v little water damage on top edge 515pp. #4 337pp and #12 220pp. #5 391pp with UnC Trav 172pp; the latter has only 5 illus.No specific number called for. #7 522pp. #8 543pp. #15 OUR MUTUAL FRIEND 523pp. CHRISTMAS BOOKS 256pp with SKETCHES BY BOZ. No water damage 292pp. The set looks very fine on the shelf. This is the "Charles Dickens Edition" apparently because it is the only edition he edited before he died in June 1870. None of the volumes has a printing date but "American Notes" has a Postscript dated May 1868 therefore 1867-8. The complete major novels set is 16 vols. The missing novels are Oliver Twist Little Dorritt & Great Expectations: Edwin Drood was only half finished when C D died. To compensate for this there are 4 Shorter Works. How many vols were in this set is unknown but this appears to be the most complete set of the very early Charles Dickens Edition on offer anywhere. Please expect extra postage. Charles Dickens Edn. London 1855. Autographed envelope dated 1855. 12.7 cm x 7.3 cm. The envelope is Signed in the lower left corner by Charles Dickens as was the usual practice in the Victorian era. Addressed to "Daniel Maclise Esquire. R.A. / 14 Russell Place / Fitzroy Square". Daniel Maclise 1806-1870 was one of Dickens's closest and life-long friends. He illustrated his Christmas Books: The Chimes; Cricket on the Hearth; and The Battle of Life. His 1839 portrait of Dickens at the age of 27 became the frontispiece for Nicholas Nickleby. The envelope contains a "Mone Penny" postage stamp with the letter 'L' in the corner and rubber-stamped with the date 'JA 3 '55'. On the reverse on the flap is Dickens's rubber-stamp in blue a 'D' within a garter or buckled belt. There is another postal rubber-stamp in orange dated 1855. Slightly soiled. I surmise that the orange streaks on the front of the envelope are from the ink of the postal stamp on the reverse as they are the exact same colour. The envelope has been opened and is empty. Overall a wonderful piece of Signed Dickensiana with a superb association. SIGNED. Very Good. Envelope. unknown
