London May 1864-November 1865: Chapman & Hall. First Edition. Original Wraps. In the original monthly parts 20 parts in 19. Original green printed wrappers; ALL wrappers are correct. ALL the ads called for by Hatton & Cleaver are present except for the rare ad "The Economic Life Assurance Society" following the plates in part 14. FIRST ISSUE of the wrappers without the imprint at the foot of front wrapper of part 1. In the Advertiser of part 10 Hatton & Cleaver states "In a few copies seen p. 13 was misprinted "31." The present copy has this misprint. The plates are very good to fine; the text and wrappers are clean and bright and without repair. Part 15 with text unopened. Most spines are expertly and invisibly renewed. Our Mutual Friend has more of the Advertiser ads than any of Dickens' other works having 320 pages and 89 insets and slips in the rear of the parts. Altogether a brilliant set lacking just one rare ad and having the first issue points in the wrappers and a rare misprint in the Advertiser of part 10. This fine set is the best we are likely to find and it has a pedigree - it is from the famed Thomas Hatton & Cleaver collection. Publisher's russet-coloured buckram blocked in gilt and black complete with rare paper jacket. With forty illustrations by Martin Stone. One of the author's most famous tales issued as part of the 'Dickens Crown Edition' which was published between 1896-1899. Internally clean gilt to spine tarnished else cloth is bright and fresh; fragile jacket with some chips and tears neatly stabilised to reverse side with archival tape losses to spine ends and joints toned to same. A remarkable survival of a nineteenth century dustwrapper on a popular title by a major author. Rare thus. 'Our Mutual Friend' written in the years 1864-65 is the last completed novel written by Charles Dickens and concerns money and what money can make of life. Preceding Dickens' final crime-based work 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood' this novel also features elements of intrigue and suspense; John Harmon a wealthy young heir is supposed drowned and in a case of mistaken identity his estate is passed to Boffin a former servant of his father. The title to the book was selected four years before the issue but Dickens' effort to keep "All The Year Round" afloat and his illnesses compelled him to write at a diminished speed.Thirty thousand copies were sold of the first number see: ECKEL p.94. With page "31" misprint instead of "13" in number ten and Our Mutual Advertiser in each issue. Lacking the scarce 4-page inset of "The Economic Life Assurance Society" in no. 14 but retaining the "Foreign Bank Notes" slip in nos. 19/20. HATTON & CLEAVER pp. 345-370. A very early American issue of Our Mutual Friend. Not listed in Podeshi which lists only the 'Author's American Edition' published in two volumes. This edition appears to be a "cheap" edition common at the time due to the lack of Stone's illustrations and the combining of two volumes into one. Coincident with the publication of the two volume Peterson edition as well as the Harper edition of the same year.
