Sunday Under Three Heads
London: J.W. Jarvis & Som 1884. Small pamphlet bound in gray printed wrappers. 49 pages. Dickens wrote this short piece under the pseudonym Timothy Sparks in 1836. As printed on the front cover this is a reproduction in exact fac-simile of the excessively rare original. One of two reprints printed in 1884 it has been argued that the Jarvis copy proceeds the Pearson of Manchester making this the second edition of this very scarce early Dickens title however priority is still debated. As per Eckels' the present copy does not have the chapter heading 'Sunday Under Three Heads' on page 35 and was issued with a gray outer wrapper. Collation: Printed front wrap with title/author/fac-simile statement/publisher; publisher's statement inside cover; i-ii intro dated Feb. 1st 1884 credited to T. J. Wise iii-iv fac-simile of original engraved title-page with blank verso; v-vi blank; vii-x half-title/ frontispiece/ title/ blank; xi-xiv dedication; pp. 1-49 including two engravings unpaginated; 2 blanks advert for Pickwick Paper; last 5 pages Jarvis adverts including rear cover. Old crease very mild down center of pamphlet else a fine copy. Near fine. Second Edition. Printed Wrapper. Near Fine. 16mo - over 5" - 6" tall. J.W. Jarvis & Som Paperback

Dickens Charles
Sunday Under Three Heads
London: Chapman and Hall 1884. Originally published in 1836 this edition is one of two reprints published in 1884 and may rightly be considered the second edition though the issue of priority is questionable. This version published in the Manchester Series of Fac-simile Re-prints of Rare and Valuable Works is somewhat scarcer than the Jarvis edition of the same year. Written by Dickens in opposition to the Sabbath bills the tract was to foreshadow his lifelong advocacy of the poorer classes and launched the author as an outspoken opponent of the hated "Stiggins" fraternity This copy is complete in the original grey wrappers with 3 plates and 49 pages. Paper back-strip as largely worn away but pamphlet is otherwise quite clean and tightly bound. A good or better copy of a scarce piece of early Dickensiana. Podeschi b32/Eckel p.102. Second Edition. Original Wraps. Good. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Chapman and Hall Paperback

DICKENS Charles
Tale of Two Cities
First Edition First Issue of "A Tale of Two Cities" DICKENS Charles. BROWNE Hablot Knight illustrator. A Tale of Two Cities. With Illustrations by H.K. Browne. London: Chapman and Hall 1859. First edition first issue. With all eight of Smith's internal flaws necessary for the first issue present including page 213 misnumbered 113. Octavo 8 3/16 x 5 3/16 inches; 207 x 132 mm. x 1-254 pp. Sixteen inserted plates including frontispiece and engraved vignette title by Browne 'Phiz'. Without the publisher's catalog bound at the end. Half green morocco over green linen cloth boards bound by Bayntun. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Spine sunned to brown. Some occasional minor spots. Some light offsetting from plates. Plate facing page 150 with a closed one-inch tear. Overall a very good copy. A Tale of Two Cities was first serialized in Dickensís periodical All the Year Round from April 30-November 26 1859. Its appearance in monthly parts July-December 1859 and book form mark Dickensís return to his old publishers Chapman and Hall after a long stay with Bradbury and Evans. The extremely large audience for the novel in All the Year Round however left less than the usual demand for the parts issue and at first for the book both of which are now quite rare. This title also marks the authorís final collaboration with Phiz Dickensís most evocative and most sympathetic illustrator. Hatton and Cleaver 33lff. Smith I 13. HBS 68305. $2750 Chapman and Hall hardcover
