Has all three typographical errors associated with the first edition first issue: P.19 line 6: "elgble"; P.209 line 23: "chair" instead of "hair"; and P.275 line 22: "counsinship" instead of "cousinship." In what we believe is a publisher's full straight-grain morocco binding plain yellow end papers all edges gilt. Joints repaired moderate darkening and foxing to most plates heaviest at the frontis and engraved title. <br /> <br /> One of Dickens' finest novels the action in Bleak House revolves around a never-ending set of related Chancery Court cases to resolve the inheritance of a considerable estate. Dickens turns his pen to a biting condemnation of the system and the need for reform which shouldn't surprise the Dickens scholar. A complex novel and filled with subplots it engages and titillates the reader from start to finish. Noted by some for Inspector Bucket's prominent role in investigating a murder which earned it a spot on the Haycraft-Queen cornerstone list of detective fiction the novel is also memorable for its complex representation of femininity. Book Condition: Good: Light wear to corner edges and spine ends. Lightly rubbed. Tightly bound with clean intact endpapers and strong hinges. Heavy spotting to front and rear pastedowns endpapers fly false title and frontis pages. Lighter spotting to remaining prelims. Spotting and marks to plates and other adjacent pages. Some stains to upper section of some plates. DJ Condition: No DJ Pages 454. Size: 8vo 20cm by 12cm. BOOK RESUME: The Library Edition came about on the suggestion of Forster that there was no high-quality edition that would appeal to the wealthy. With a dedication to Forster the Library Edition appeared in 22 volumes in 1858-9 at 7s 6d per volume. The only illustrations were the frontispieces. Between 1861 and 1874 this edition was reissued in 30 volumes with the addition of Tale of Two Cities Great Expectations Our Mutual Friend The Uncommercial Traveller A Childs History of England Christmas Stories and Drood. The reissue contained illustrations by artists such as Marcus Stone John Leech and Clarkson Stanfield and came to be known as the Illustrated Library Edition. Chapman and Hall in 1873 published a prospectus for the Second Illustrated Library Edition published in 30 volumes between 1873 and 1876 and sold at £15 a set. Chapman and Hall hardcover

From The Library of Jean Hersholt with his signed bookplate inside of slipcase. First edition in the original 20 issues in 19 parts with 40 inserted plates including frontispiece and vignette title by Hablot K. Browne. With the Bleak House advertiser in each back cover ad wrapper in first state issues one to five lacks the eight page "Grace Aguilar's Works" slip in part 16; however all others are retained and with the scarce "Village Pastor" booklet in part 15. Also lacks the "New Geographical and Educational Works" ad in part XIV. First issue of the text uncorrected thus: in Part 1. p.19 line six with "eligible" & Part VII p.209 line 23 with "chair." Part IX p.275 line 22 with "cousinship" i-viivii-xxixii-xivxvxvi12-624. Spines expertly renewed on a few parts. Some light soil to a few wrappers. Neat subscriber's name to margin of Part XIX/XX. Tissue guards in place. Plates of Parts VIIIIX and XII lightly tanned at edges but not affecting illustrations. Two of the ten dark plates with light offsetting onto the adjacent plate. Remaining plates are very good to fine. Part X unopened ergo unread. Overall a sharp set. Dickens's assault on the abuses in the Courts of Chancery "many of the characters in the book were identified as having for their prototypes several of Dickens's friends." ECKEL pp.79-81.
