Parts 1-4 & 6 of the original issued pamphlets of Edwin Drood. There is a sixth pamphlet included marked No. V but it is actually another No. IV in the wrong wraps. Printed blue-green wraps on all parts illustrations by Luke Fildes only lacking the two that are in No. V most of "Eighteenpence" sticker on No. VI survives No. II lacks the "Cork Hats" ad Part IV lacks the "Chapman & Co." ads. Wear at corners and spine ends chips to edges of wraps one of the illustrations has a short tear in margin some scattered foxing/light staining several pages uncut. Original printed blue wrappers with trade advertisements to inner sides as well as outside back wrappers with a variety of publishers ads and slips bound-in. Housed in a four-fold green cloth folder and quarter green morocco and green cloth slip-case with titling in gilt. A made-up copy with backstrips repaired and some ads missing as usual. Upper wrapper to part worn chipped along edges.<br /> <br /> § First edition in original parts with 14 designs by Luke Fildes engraved on wood by Dalziel C. Roberts and others and cover designed by C. A. Collins brother of Wilkie Collins. "When Dickens died on June 9 1870 he had completed only enough of his manuscript to make up six installments leaving unfinished a work which had commanded the widest attention for its opening numbers and which promised to be one of his most effective and popular books. ‎1870. New York: Harper & Brothers 1870. 2 pp preliminary ads plus 44 pp terminal ads dated Oct 1870. Original yellow-brown pictorial wrappers.<br/> <br/> Early second American edition published in late September about three weeks after Fields Osgood's edition -- and about three months after Dickens's death in June left this tale unfinished. The front cover illustration the same as appeared on the six UK parts was the work of Charles A. Collins -- Dickens's son-in-law and Wilkie's brother; the scenes shown formed the basis for the numerous attempts after Dickens's death to complete or "solve" the mystery. Harper had been serializing DROOD in parts as a monthly Dickens supplement to their Harper's Weekly but Fields Osgood had earlier paid Dickens an advance for book publication. The Harper serialization -- as well as the fact that this Harper edition came out only in wrappers -- probably explains why Harper's edition is so scarce today: many of their readers had already read the tale serially. This copy does bear the earliest and usual date October 1870 on both the ads and rear cover and the preliminary list of titles properly ends with No. 349. This copy does NOT have the Dickens portrait leaf which Smith notes is true with some copies. Copies without that leaf may be a later state but possibly copies WITH it may be a later state; a third possibility is that some initial buyers removed that leaf for framing in honor of the author who had just died. Condition is very good with very little of the wrapper lacking but with a couple of dampstains affecting the front cover and first leaves. This Harper edition is MUCH scarcer than the Fields Osgood edition for the reasons cited above; this is the first time in 40 years that we have offered it in original wrappers. Missing ONLY cork insert & a "Chapman & Hall" in part 5. . Hatton/Cleaver calls for parts 3 & 5 to have an 8 page "Chapman & Hall recent acquisitions" insert. Our Part 3 has this but 5 does not. All else is present and accounted for as per Hatton & Cleaver. ALSO: H/C states but assigns no priority: "in about 10% of the copies of Part 4 there appeared the same Chapman & Hall." This dealer has the H/C book and that statement is shown on our last scan. Our Drood is one of the 90% where the Chapman & Hall is NOT found. H/C entry for all the needed Drood points is 14 pages long. Their book is titled "Bibliography of the Periodical Works of Charles Dickens." This bibliography at no extra charge will accompany our Drood. This bealer has used the H/C for years and has no furthur use for it as he is winding down his book business. It is an AS NEW VERY FINE 1994 Martino reprint which is itself limited to 350 copies. DROOD's CONDITION: Worn. Detached front wraps on 2 3 & 6; and 3 & 6's lower wrap. Wraps with varying degree of wear that of upper vol 1 & lower vol 6 the worst. Spines of 1 2 3 & 6 worn. Internally all quite nice. No aging foxing marginalia etc. . Chapman & Hall paperback‎

Periodicals IV V VI have minor dust soiling but are in very good condition. II has torn at top right corner. All periodicals begin with adverts. 14 plates total between all including portrait and title page. Foxing present in all volumes. Plate 1 in I is placed loosely inside. Volume II is missing Cork Hats ad at back. Volume IV is missing all ads at front and back. Volume V has no ads at front and missing yellow ad at back. Volume VI is missing yellow ad but has Eighteenpence slip pasted on front cover as originally printed in earliest issue. very good Hatton & Cleaver 371. Dickens last unfinished novel which was garnering intense popularity and some believe was set to become his bestseller. Issued in 6 periodicals Dickens death in June of 1870 left readers hanging as to what "The Mystery" was. The illustrated front cover was produced by C.A.Collins depicting the eight incidents to have taken place within the story leading some people to speculate as to its ending. Dickens was very careful not to release information as to the ultimate ending of the story preferring the suspense of the publications.
