Octavo xiv 2 609pp 7. Full green morocco over beveled boards title in gilt on the spine. All edges gilt. Five decorative raised bands gilt lettering and decorative compartments. Doublures with inlaid red morocco and gilt dentelles. Inset hand-colored portrait of Dickens after paintings by Daniel Maclise under glass with brass frame in front doublure. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for Charles J. Sawyer LTD of London. Front hinge reinforced with archival leather restoration almost indistinguishable. This work is the second issue of the text with the half-title the corrected "W" in Weller on the vignette title "loud knocking" on page 18 is slightly mutilated signature "E" present on pages 25 and 27 and pagination present for page 26. Solid text block light wear to edges of some leaves faint foxing. Complete with vignette title page frontispiece portrait and 41 illustrated plates by Robert Seymour and H.K. Brown "Phiz". Smith I 3 Hatton & Cleaver 3-88pp A beautiful Cosway-Style binding. The Cosway-style binding originated in London in the early 20th Century created by bookseller and Dickens scholar John Harrison Stonehouse. The style was named after Richard Cosway 1742-1821 the celebrated English miniaturist painter known for his delicate portrait work. Stonehouse commissioned Sangorski & Sutcliffe to create bindings that incorporated miniature watercolor portraits set into the covers under glass. These miniatures-painted on ivory by artists such as Miss C.B. Currie-were often portraits of the book's author a key character or a historical figure related to the text. Each was framed within the leather cover usually of richly gilt morocco and accompanied by elaborate tooling and jeweled ornamentation. The style became a hallmark of Edwardian luxury bookbinding. After the deaths of Sangorski 1912 and later Currie the tradition continued under Sutcliffe and later firms and "Cosway-style" came to denote any binding featuring such inset miniatures even when produced elsewhere. THE TEXT is first issue in parts VII XIII and XIV; the text is mixed in parts VI and VIII; parts XV through XIX/XX have no textual points of priority. Previous owner names appear on front wraps of parts VI XII XVIII and XIX/XX. Now we will list the 11 points required by Eckel for a prime Pickwick: #1. All front covers must bear the date 1836. #2. Parts I and II front wrappers must carry the words "With four illustrations by Seymour. #3. Part III front wrapper must carry the words "With Illustrations by R. W. Buss." #4. Part I must have four plates by Seymour signed and not re-etched by Phiz. #5. Part II must have 3 plates by Seymour signed. #6. Part III must have the two plates signed "Drawn and etched by R. W. Buss" and the page numbers. #7. Part IV has the two plates indistinctly signed "Nemo" and not "Phiz." #8. Parts II III and XV must have the Addresses by the Author. #9. Parts XVII XVIII and XIX/XX must have the Addresses by the publishers. #10. Parts I to XII must have no captions only page numbers where they are inserted; parts XIII to XIX/XX must have neither captions nor page numbers. #11. On the vignette title page the name "Weller" on the signboard above the door must appear with a "V" and the signature "Phiz fecit" must surround the tablet at the bottom of the frontispiece. The present Pickwick is lacking only numbers 2 3 and 8 above. Light soiling on some wrappers; small corner repair to rear wrap of part X. Internally clean and bright. Housed in a custom green quarter leather slipcase with chemise. Armorial bookplate is affixed to the chemise. <p>FIRST EDITION. Dickens's first great success the Pickwick Papers transformed him from an little-known journalist into England's most famous writer. "From a literary standpoint the supremacy of this book has been … firmly established … It was written by Dickens when he was 24 and its publication placed the author on a solid foundation from which he never was removed …. It is quite probable that only Shakespeare's Works the Bible and perhaps the English Prayer Book exceed <em>Pickwick Papers</em> in circulation" Eckel.</p><p><em>The Pickwick Papers </em>was first issued in monthly parts and then appeared in a single volume. This copy contains the later states of the text points and the plates are re-etched adding the Chapman and Hall imprint. The title bears the original 1837 publication date whereas reissues with later dates are known.</p><p>Brown morocco gilt upper board with mounted portrait of Mr. Pickwick after a drawing by Kyd top edge gilt. Charles Parkhurst Books presents a Prime Pickwick The Parkhurst-Goranitis-Costas copy exhibiting ALL eleven points enumerated in "Prime Pickwicks In Parts" by John C. Eckel 1928 as enumerated below. Remarkably it contains the rare ad "Pigot's Coloured Views" in part XIII known only in 5 copies now 6. The present set is a publisher's presentation copy signed "With The Publishers Compliments" on the inside front wrap of part III in the same hand and on the same inside wrapper as the McCutcheon- Young-Suzannet prime copy. Octavo 20 parts in 19; original blue-green printed wrappers. First edition having been collated with Hatton & Cleaver and containing the correct wrappers advertisments addresses first state of the plates and text with the following exceptions: WRAPPERS - the rear wrap of part I is early; parts IV and V with early wraps; all other wrappers are first issue; all front wrappers have the date 1836. It is important to note that parts I and II have "With Four Illustrations By Seymour" and part III has "With Illustrations by R. W. Buss" on front wraps. PLATES - part IV plates are 2nd state of original first plate; part VI plates are in 2nd state of original first plate 1st state plates are rare and "may be considered the rarest items in the whole realm of Pickwick" - Hatton & Cleaver p.47; part I plates are all signed by Seymour #1 is 1st state of 1st plate - #2 is 2nd state of 1st plate - #3 is 1st state of 2nd plate - #4 is 1st state of 2nd plate; all other plates are 1st state. S. Orr" - "Jennings Landscape" and "George Henekey & Co." ads; part X lacks "Literary Announcements" - all others are present. ADDRESSES by the Author - all are present in parts II III X and XV; part III Address has edges extended 2nd issue in parts II and X. ADDRESSES by the Publishers - all are present in parts XVII XVIII and XIX/XX. In summation the parts which are complete are parts II VIII XI XII XIII XIV XV XVI XVII XVIII and XIX/XX. Most parts have spines expertly renewed. A few wrappers show light soiling; part III wrappers have edges extended; plates are very good to fine. Note that part II is complete and has first issue of the text indicating that it is one of the first 500 copies printed in the first issue as in the Dexter copy. Also noteworthy is that the Advertiser in part XIX/XX is the first issue with the date on page 7 misprinted "1388" rather than "1838." Now let me enumerate the eleven "points" which are necessary for a Pickwick to qualify as a prime copy; as Eckel states: #1 All covers of the parts must bear the date 1836 in Roman numbers. #2 Parts I and II must have the words "With four illustrations by Seymour." #3 Part III the words "With illustrations by R. W. Buss." #4 Part I must have three plates by Seymour signed and not re-etched by "Phiz." #5 Part II must have three plates by Seymour signed. #6 Part III must have two plates signed "Drawn and etched by R. W. Buss" and the pages numbered thereon. #7 Part IV two plates faintly signed "Nemo" and not "Phiz." #8 Parts II III X and XV must have the addresses by the author. #9 Parts XVII XVIII and XX the addresses by the publishers. #10 Plates in Parts I to XII must have no captions only numerical references to the pages where they go parts XIII to XX have neither titles nor numerical references. #11 On the vignette title-page the name "Weller" on the signboard over the door is spelled with a "V." On the frontispiece the artist's name on the center shield on the bottom must run around the shield. The present copy conforms to all the above points. Frontispiece title vignette on which the sign title reads "Tony Veller" and 41 plates including the two Buss plates. Extra illustrated with 32 plates from a pirated edition of the work which contained "illegitimate" illustrations and are signed either "Saml. Weller del." or "J.V. del." and bear the imprint of E. Grattan.` Some foxing to the plates relatively minor compared to other copies we have seen very good overall. Smith I 3. With 74 illustrations. Light foxing to the plates and pages. Very occasionally the foxing is more pronounced particularly to the plates. Plates darkened as well. Minor spots of abrasion to pp. 576 and 577 obscuring just a couple of words. Lacking the Buss plates opposite p. 69 and p. 74. Eckel pp. 19-27. Charles Dickens's first novel was published by Chapman & Hall in monthly installments from March of 1836 until November 1837. The publisher had just started a series of amusing stories dealing with “Cockney sporting scenesâ€. The series was built around the illustrations of Robert Seymour. Publication began on March 30th. Less than a month later on April 20th Robert Seymour committed suicide. Minor browning to a few leaves some spotting spine rebacked and rubbing to board covers. Bookplate of Thomas C. Ogden. Also lacking the engraved title page. Bound with the half-title. Modern full flame calf with gilt-lettered leather spine labels; decorative printed endpapers. Binder's ticket on front pastedown reads: "G. Horner Encuadernacion. Gomez de la Cortina 34. Eric. 15 - 21 - 17. Tacubaya D.F." Binding is fine; book block is good but with heavy browning to the frontispiece and uneven browning and foxing to the other plates; old gift inscription on the black verso of the frontispiece.
