DICKENS, Charles
ALL THE YEAR ROUND. A Weekly Journal / New Series One lot of ten volumes bound two to a book for the years 1873 to 1877
London: The Author & Chapman & Hall 1877. 1st edition. Hardcover. Royal 8vo. Nicely bound in contemporary 3/4 leather over 'pebbled' cloth. Each of the books shows some wear scuffing and light soiling to the leather and cloth. However the hinges and joints are tight and the contents are generally quite clean and unmarked throughout. The cloth on the rear board of the volume for 1877 is partially peeled away from the board. It also appears that some paper stuck to the top left joint of the rear board of the 1874 volume. This has not affected the integrity of the joint and is a minor cosmetic blemish. The other volumes are free of such defects. Overall a good sturdy set sold as one lot. Due to the size and weight of this collection it might be wise to enquire first as to costs and options to ship. 'All the Year Round' was a British weekly literary magazine founded owned and edited by Charles Dickens and after the author's death in June 1870 owned and edited by his son Charles Dickens Jr. It continued publishing until 1895. Many famous novels were serialized in its pages including Dicken's 'A Tale of Two Cities' and 'Great Expectations' and 'The Woman in White' and 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins. Our offering is one lot of ten volumes five books of 'The New Series' of this periodical commencing with volume IX from November 16 1872 to April 26 1873 No. 207 to 230 and concluding with volume XVIII from March 3 1877 to August 4 1877 no. 431 to 453 and the 'Extra Summer Number' of July 2 1877; a total of five uniformly bound volumes. The Author & Chapman & Hall hardcover

London: The Author & Chapman & Hall 1868. 1st edition. Hardcover. Pagination: Volume XIX pp. iv 73-620; volume XX pp. iv 596; with a separate Table of Contents for each volume. Royal 8vo. Nicely bound in contemporary 3/4 leather over 'pebbled' cloth. The binding is rubbed at the extremities and across the spine. The front endpapers have separated but the binding is tight. Occasional marginal foxing but generally the contents are very clean. Overall a tight copy in good to good plus condition. 'All the Year Round' was a British weekly literary magazine founded owned and edited by Charles Dickens and after the author's death in June 1870 by his son Charles Dickens Jr. It continued publishing until 1895. Many famous novels were serialized in its pages including Dicken's 'A Tale of Two Cities' and 'Great Expectations' and 'The Woman in White' and 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins. Our offering is the last volume in the 'old series' although it was not officially designated as such before Dickens instituted a 'New Series' the announcement of which is contained on the last page of this volume. Also contained within this volume is the first appearance in print of what T. S. Eliot called 'the first and greatest of English detective novels' 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins See issue of January 4 1868 for the first installment and the issue of August 8 1868 for the last installment. American Notes and Pictures from Italy. With Eighteen Illustrations by A. B. Frost and Gordon Thomson
London: Chapman and Hall 1870.
Tall 8vo. 245 x 190 mm. 9 ¾ x 7 ½ inches. iv 210 pp. Publisher’s green cloth decorated in gilt and black ink on front board title in gilt on spine; some minor discoloration to the binding corners lightly bumped.

Very good copy of two of Dickens’ most successful travel books focusing on his visits to the United States and Italy. His travels in America 1842 took him from Boston to New York Philadelphia and Washington. Dickens travels further south to Richmond and then back north to Baltimore and west to Pittsburgh Cincinnati north again to Niagara Falls and into Canada to Toronto Montreal and Quebec. On the passage home he contemplates issues that disturb him about American and devotes a long essay on slavery and its corrosive impact on the South and American Society as a whole. His depiction of the American character is at time severe and his view of rugged individualism and the proclivity for violence overshadowed the positive aspect of Americans and their vibrant democracy and strong sense of community.

In 1844-45 Dickens traveled to Italy through France to Genoa and on to Parma Modena Bologna Ferrara Rome and Naples. His revulsion for the Papacy and the Catholic Church was apparent in his descriptions of the condition of the people he encountered as he traveled through the country. .

“Ariosto’s house Tasso’s prison a rare old Gothic cathedral and more churches of course are the sights of Ferrara. But the long-silent streets and the dismantled palaces where ivy waves in lieu of Banners and where rank weeds are slowly creeping up the long-untrodden stairs are the best sights of all.â€

A very nice copy of this well-illustrated edition.
