Original blind-stamped purple-brown cloth with gilt-decorated spines and front covers.<br/> <br/> First Editions in book form of THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP all of Vol I plus pp 1-223 of Vol II and of BARNABY RUDGE pp 229-306 of Vol II plus all of Vol III. After NICHOLAS NICKLEBY Dickens decided that all his future novels would be issued as loosely-connected tales presented by one Master Humphrey; furthermore serialization would be weekly and with illustrations printed within the text rather than on separate plates. MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK was initially issued in 88 weekly parts each being one folded leaf with no stitching -- with every four or five parts also grouped into 20 monthly parts stitched within wrappers; the three volumes in cloth were accordingly published separately at intervals of about seven months. Simultaneous with the publication of Vol III MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK was divided and issued as two separate one-volume novels -- at which time Dickens gave up on the experiment and reverted to the old formula monthly serial parts with separate plates for MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT and subsequent novels. This set is in the primary and usual binding with the gilt front cover clock whose hands point to the appropriate volume number. Subscribers to serial parts could have them bound into this "original publisher's cloth" at a multitude of places so variations of endpapers and edges are many. We have seen copies of MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK with several variations of endpapers: light coffee-brown plain white pale yellow and as here white with blue and red marbling. As with some but not all copies with marbled endpapers this copy has the same marbling on the page edges -- perhaps the most sought-after variant. The condition of the volumes is near-fine the only notable defect being very slight wear at most of the spine ends; there is minor fading at the top of the Vol III front cover where a shorter book undoubtedly once stood but the spines themselves exhibit less than the usual amount of fading. The delicate endpapers are intact and there is scarcely any foxing within. Each front paste-down bears a 1912 Dickens Centennial stamp that collectors -- led very publicly by the Royal Family -- were encouraged to put into their Dickens books; priced at a penny each the purchase of these stamps provided income to some Dickens descendants who it had come to light were eking by on tiny government pensions since Dickens's works were no longer providing copyright income. Complete in 88 parts in original wraps housed in a tailor-made leather Solinger box and bookcloth chemise. Prefaces and preliminary matter present in Parts 26 52 and 88. The vast majority in very good condition with some light soiling creasing or inoffensive wear; Part 7 has a split to the spine Part 17 has an amateur repair Parts 29 & 30 have closed tears to the rear wrap and Parts 12 3237 81 83 85 87 and 88 have visible soiling or shallow chipping to the wraps to some extent. The majority are internally clean and fresh and all pieces present conform to the requirements called for in Hatton & Cleaver "Periodical Works of Charles Dickens" P. 163. A significant number of the parts bear the signature of "H. Evans Esq." discreetly to the upper front wrap. A very good complete set of a very unusual Dickens periodical publication. <br /> <br /> From a publishing perspective a bit of a botched experiment although sales at points were astronomically higher than expected and from a bibliographical standpoint something of a curiosity. Master Humphrey was available in this format initially each weekly part being 16 pages and priced at threepence; weekly parts were then gathered by Chapman and Hall and combined into the more usual trimmed monthly parts; then three volumes of the weekly parts bound together with yellow endpapers and trimmed edges were followed by a slightly shorter three volume edition with marbled endpapers and edges. Eckel states "Of the four issues the weekly one is difficult to obtain in a clean condition and is therefore the costliest." It's possible the entire concept would have been a costly failure had it not been for the legendary popularity of Little Nell going viral in "The Old Curiosity Shop" which makes up one of the full length stories encased in Master Humphrey's Clock. The concept itself is charming and typically Dickensian; Master Humphrey is an elderly antiquarian who keeps old manuscripts in the belly of a long case clock and invites his friends and confidantes to come read them. The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge make up the bulk of the long form narrative accompanied by numerous short stories sketches and anecdotal digressions. <br /> There's something quite unnerving about the Victorian preoccupation with presenting everything as a communal parlour game that probably has something to do with the very things Dickens highlights; Victorian London was haves and have-nots the invited and those who had to watch the feast from the other side of the window you either conformed and joined in the games or you were outside. The cast iron social awareness of your average Victorian must have been something to behold. <br /> Complete and presentable sets of either of the parts issues are hard to come by and the tales held in Master Humphrey's Clock are probably best read in this form one slim episode after another accompanied by ads for Mechli's Leadenhall emporium. In very good condition. From the library of William Waldorf Astor with his bookplates. Master Humphrey's Clock originally appeared in the form of a weekly periodical published between April of 1840 and December of 1841. Entirely written and edited by Dickens the magazine included both short stories and two novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Many of the short stories acted as frame stories to the novels and although Dickens' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848 and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within. Most later anthologies published the short stories and the novels separately. Chapman and Hall were the first to publish them together in 1840 in three bound volumes under the title Master Humphrey's Clock which retains the full and correct ordering of texts as they originally appeared. Master Humphrey was a publishing experiment on Dickens's part unique in his canon of issuing two novels together: The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. The publication was issued in three forms in weekly parts monthly parts and the present book form copies in cloth upon completion. 3 vols tall octavo. Printed frontispieces and 194 woodcut illustrations of which 154 are by Browne 19 by Cattermole and 1 by Daniel Maclise. This complete set of three volumes are all in very good conditions and bound in their original ribbed brown cloth blind stamped bindings with gilt text and elaborate gilt designs on the spine and with a gilt decorations on each of the front boards in the form of clocks with the hands on each volume pointing to the appropriate volume number. Each volume is a small quarto of 10 1/8 by 6 1/2 inches with light rubbing to the cloth and the heads and heels of the spines and with the cloth worn through on the tips of the boards. Volume II has a small 1/8 by a 1 inch long chip to the cloth at the rear edge of the spine in the title block which barely impacts on the gilt title. The title pages for each volume show a small oval 1.5 inch wide auctioneer's stamp to the right of the author's name. Save for a few printer's ink stains in the margins and minor foxing to the preliminaries the contents are quite clean and free of much tanning or foxing. The hinges and joints remain tight and storng. None of the three volumes are in dust jackets and presumably as issued. Volume I contains 306 pages of text and is illustrated with a frontispiece and vignettes throughout from wood engravings by George Cattermiole and Hablot Browne "Phiz". Volume II is dated 1841 as called for and contains 306 pages and is illustrated as above. Volume III is also dated 1841 and contains 426 pages and is illustrated as above. Large 8vo. 5 iv 1 2-306; 3 vi 1 2-306 2; 3 vi 1 2-426 pp. Half contemporary sheep over marbled boards spines in six compartments with two black sheep labels lettered in gold on each spine gold decorations on the spines; all edges sprinkled red. Bound from the weekly parts. With illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. Illustrations are wood cuts excepting the frontispieces a departure from the usual steel-etching. Eckel 67; Hatton & Cleaver 163; Smith I 6. Dickens intended the story to center around a large group of characters with new characters being introduced and old characters rotated in and out of the stories. This project was scrapped due to lack of readership and Dickens began a serial titled "The Old Curiosity Shop". These volumes contain "The Old Curiosity Shop" and "Barnaby Rudge" and are bound without wrappers and the advertisements. A Very Good set with moderate wear and rubbing to the boards and scattered foxing throughout two leaves have a small tear not affecting the text. Chapman and Hall hardcover

Contemporary red quarter calf binding title labels and decorative gilt to spine raised bands all edges marbled marbled endpapers and boards. The continental edition published a year after it's British publication text in English. Spotting throughout with the occasional splash mark. Binding rubbed to extremities corners bumped some chipping to the tops of the spine rubbing to joints some marks to boards spine a little darkened. An attractive example in a contemporary binding. Chapman and Hall 1840. Three volumes of the weekly parts bound in one volume brown boards with worn half leather spine and corners and leather label. The wrappers have been removed on binding with only a fragment of one at the beginning of of Volume III. Vol I lacks prelims and p1 to 26. Pp25 to 306 are present starting with Master Humphrey from his Clock Side in the Chimney Corner My old companion tells me it is midnight. It includes The Old Curiosity Shop. Vol II is complete with frontispiece and title page dated 1841 and pp vi to 306. Vol III has no title page as it begins with Chapter 13 of Barnaby Rudge and pp 1-312 but this volume is not complete finishing with the end of Chapter 64 of Barnaby Rudge the two final pages being repaired with tape. A few grubby marks to the margins but generally very good. The first appearance in print of The Old Curiosity Shop. Incomplete but the weekly part issue is very rare. First Edition. Half-Leather.
