‎1838. London: Richard Bentley 1838.

3 vols. Original cloth yellow endpapers backstrip titled in gilt with Bentley imprint also in gilt. Very good copy with some areas of sun fading and spotting to the cloth and plates foxed as usual. Neat early name on front pastedown in each vol.

§ First edition in original cloth with the title page credited to "Boz" rather than Dickens and with the Fireside plate facing p. 312 in volume three. The first edition of Oliver Twist in original cloth is a cornerstone in any Dickens collection. Publication of the serial in Bentley's Miscellany began in 1837 and "when Bentley decided to publish Oliver Twist in book form before its completion in his periodical Cruikshank was forced to complete the last few plates in haste. Dickens did not review them until the eve of publication and objected to the "Fireside" plate.and also disliked having "Boz" on the titlepage. He voiced these objections prior to the publication and the plate and the titlepage were. changed between November 9 and 16" Smith 34. Smith I 4. Eckel pp. 59-62. unknown‎

‎DICKENS, Charles ("Boz!")‎

‎Oliver Twist‎

‎Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard 1839. First American Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near fine. Small octavo in fours 2 volumes. 224pp. 196pp. plus 16pp. of publisher's advertisements at the rear of volume II. A married set in uniform condition externally bound in the publisher's original drab boards with rose-colored muslin cloth spines and printed spine labels. Boards worn at the corners with some flaking to the spine labels rather more so on volume I. Volume I has a contemporary owner's name inked to the front paste-down and is heavily and evenly browned though reasonably crisp and sound. Volume II is slightly shaken but brighter with very little foxing. Early 20th century bookplate to the front paste-down front inner hinge notably cracked and exposed but the binder's rope holding. Overall the set in good condition. Note that the copy of volume I that originally accompanied our volume II is also included here but is in very poor condition heavily chewed at one corner. We are not considering that volume into our price though it will be included with the shipment. The rare true first American edition of this early classic by Dickens. An instant hit in England Dickens's American publisher was very eager to have a Cruikshank-illustrated edition ready for the public though these were delayed somewhat and Lea and Blanchard decided to publish this two-volume edition without illustrations. A "Publisher's Notice" opposite the title page in volume I reads as follows: "A large portion of the last part of Oliver Twist having been sent to the American publishers in manuscript they hasten to place before the public the work complete in the present form. At the same time they have to regret that the illustrations by Cruikshank were not ready to accompany the manuscript from London. On their receipt no delay will take place in laying the remainder of the illustrated edition before the public." The one-volume illustrated edition printed in two columns is often incorrectly described by dealers as the first American edition but this 2-volume edition in fact preceded it. The set being rare in commerce it's not a difficult mistake to make. Gimbel A33. American Imprints 55385. Lea and Blanchard hardcover‎

‎Oliver Twist; or the Parish Boy's Progress.‎

‎London: Richard Bentley 1838 Three volumes. Illustrated with twenty-four steel-engraved plates by George Cruikshank. First edition mixed issue with many first issue points to the text early "Boz" on the title pages and the later "Church" plate in Volume III. Lacking half-titles and advertisements. Finely bound in late 19th century half black morocco marbled paper-covered boards five raised bands to spines lettered decorated and ruled in gilt and marbled endpapers. Near fine with some mild flaking to spine ends and joints some corners lightly bumped light rubbing to boards and some very light soiling and spotting internally. Overall a beautiful tight and square set of one of Dickens' most beloved works. Housed in a navy slipcase. Smith I 4. Published shortly after the enactment of the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 which mandated that state poor relief would only be given to workhouse residents Oliver Twist served as a vehicle for Dickens' criticism of the effects of poverty left unabated. Specifically this social novel tells the story of poor orphaned Oliver Twist who is drawn into the dark worlds of child labor petty crime and life in the London slums. The book features some of Dickens' most colorful characters including Fagin the Artful Dodger Bill Sykes and Nancy. The book has received many film adaptations over the years including David Lean's classic 1948 version starring John Davies as Twist and Alec Guinness as Fagin and the 1968 musical film Oliver! which won six Academy Awards and was itself adapted from the same-titled 1960 Tony Award-winning musical. . DL consignment. Shelved Room C. This edition of "OLIVER TWIST" is bound in the publisher's original boards and is missing illustrations as called for after publication thus has not been altered since original issue.

Charles Dickens was born February 7 1812 in Portsmouth England. Forced to leave school to work in a boot-blackening factory from ages 12-15 to help pay off his father's debts Dickens would take these early experiences alongside a love of reading writing and desire for fame and fortune into an immensely successful career as a novelist and journalist.

"Oliver Twist" was the second novel Dickens wrote. Originally published as a serial from 1837 to 1839 in the magazine "Bentley's Miscellany". The novelization would come about first as a three-volume work under "Boz" a pseudonym Dickens used in his early works "Sketches by Boz" with origins in the mispronunciation of "Moses" as "Boses". This nickname can still be found in this first American edition "BOZ!" on the title page.

"Oliver Twist" would break ground as the first Victorian era novel with a child protagonist its depictions of poverty and life as a child working in a factory and would become one of Dicken's most known stories. "Oliver Twist" was and remains a highly regarded work by critics and audiences alike. However it would come under fire in it's early printing for it's portrayal of the character of Fagin who's ethnicity is constantly referenced as "the Jew". Despite at first reacting defensively to early critiques of antisemitism Dickens would change the book so that past the first 38 chapters references to Fagin as "the Jew" were nearly nonexistent. 1388368. Some characters are drawn with humorous realism but for the most part humor is dimmed by gloomy memories of the author’s own neglected childhood and sensational scenes are shrouded in an atmosphere genuinely eerie and sinister That Dickens shared with his contemporaries the conviction that the novel should be an instrument of social reform is evident in Oliver Twist" Baugh. Dickens' second novel originally published as by "Boz" in serial form 1837-39; this three volume First Edition was published 6 months before the initial serialisation was complete. The first issue points of the book are succinctly summarised by Smith "Dickens not only objected to the Fireside plate but also disliked having "Boz" on the title-page. He voiced these objections prior to publication and the plate and title-page were changed between November 9 and 16'. The classic tale of the runaway orphan raised in a workhouse who joins Fagin's gang of pickpockets in London was informed by the Author's own experiences of workhouse life as a child and highlights the problems of child labour domestic violence and the poverty of street children. ‎London: Bradbury & Evans Whitefriars 1846. First single volume edition of “the most perfect of all the Dickens novels†Virginia Woolf. Octavo bound in full polished calf by Sangorski and Sutcliffe with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers top edge gilt. With black and white illustrations done by George Cruikshank. In near fine condition bookplate to the front pastedown. Housed in a custom marbled slipcase. A social novel that critiques the harsh realities of poverty and injustice in Victorian England through the story of its orphaned protagonist. Born in a workhouse and subjected to cruelty and exploitation Oliver endures a series of hardships including mistreatment by the parish authorities forced involvement with a gang of criminals led by Fagin and the constant threat of corruption. The novel exposes the failures of the Poor Law and the brutal conditions faced by the underprivileged particularly children. Through a mix of realism satire and sentimentality Dickens highlights themes of social inequality crime and moral resilience. Ultimately Oliver’s journey from suffering to eventual security serves as both a compelling narrative and a powerful critique of the systemic neglect of society’s most vulnerable members. ‎DICKENS, CHARLES FIRST OR EARLY AMERICAN PRINTINGS OF THREE WORKS‎

"Nicholas Nickleby" with illegible early ink inscription to the front flyleaf. "American Notes" with the early ink ownership inscription of Marshall Whittemore and the pencilled inscription of M. A. Lebbette to the title. Oliver Twist: Wilkins p. 15; Podeschi A31. "Nicholas Nickelby": Podeschi A43; Wilkins p. 17. "American Notes": Podeschi A67; Wilkins p. 24. Bindings rather sunned; "Notes" with the wrappers a bit chipped and soiled "Notes" also rather foxed internally because of poor paper quality though the other two works generally quite clean scattered light stains plates with overall mild toning other trivial defects but all still perfectly acceptable in their solid unrestored original bindings.

This is a pleasing group of three early American Dickens printings all in their original publisher's bindings and well preserved when considering the poor state of bookmaking in the United States at the time. Of "Oliver" one of the author's most famous works Day says "the novel's lasting achievement is the symbolic power of the dark underwolrd of the poor. The pitiful figure of Oliver holding out his little bowl and asking for more is an ineradicable symbol of all the needy children in the world pleading for sustenance. In such universalizing lies the magic of Dickens." The work first appeared in America in two volumes published by Lea & Blanchard previously Carey Lea and Blanchard in 1838-39. Our single volume edition followed shortly in 1839 initially in a state containing only two frontispiece etchings and shortly after with the full 24 as here. This copy which retains the original ads before and after the text is from the library of an important Dickens scholar: William Miller was a founding member of the Dickens Fellowship and helped create their journal "Dickensiana." He published a Dickens bibliography "The Dickens Student and Collector" in 1946 and had a large collection of Dickens' works and related ephemera particularly focusing on musical adaptations of Dickens' works. Our copy also belonged to John Beekman Finlay 1810-69 an early president of the First National Bank of Saratoga Springs and a justice of the peace. "Nicholas Nickleby" written during the same period as "Oliver" follows the eponymous character's attempts to get by and to protect his virtuous sister Kate from poverty suitors with evil motives and the pair's cartoonishly cruel uncle Ralph. Day writes that while the plot is "rather hopeless" in this novel "Dickens creates some of the most extraordinary scenes in English literature" with deliciously comic and highly theatrical juxtapositions of character and scene. Originally released in 20 parts by Lea & Blanchard from 1838-39 the present version is the first complete edition released in the United States. Apparently two concurrent states were released one with all 39 of the Phiz illustrations and the second as in our copy with two frontispiece illustrations only. The third work here is probably the most unfavorably received of all of Dickens' books particularly in the States. "Notes" reflects the hearty dislike the author developed for America during his tour there in the winter and spring of 1842. He was disgusted with the Americans' rough-hewn lack of sophistication and especially with the toleration of slavery and the book clearly shows his antipathy. Ours was one of three editions released in November of 1842; there is some disagreement about which of these is truly the first American edition but they all were issued within a few days of each other. ‎OLIVER TWIST - PENGUIN UK - 9747‎

‎PENGUIN CLASSICS. new. The story of the orphan Oliver who runs away from the workhouse only to be taken in by a den of thieves shocked readers when it was first published. Dickens's tale of childhood innocence beset by evil depicts the dark criminal underworld of a London peopled by vivid and memorable characters - the arch-villain Fagin the artful Dodger the menacing Bill Sikes and the prostitute Nancy. Combining elements of Gothic Romance the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama Dickens created an entirely newkind of fiction scathing in its indictment of a cruel society and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery.
