This is a copy that was issued by Chapman and Hall after that firm retrieved Dickens' copyrights in 1859 from Bradbury and Evans. This copy has the inserted Chapman and Hall engraved title-page replacing the original one from Bradbury and Evans. The printed title-page is the original Bradbury and Evans 1850 first edition title-page as are the sheets and plates. The only distinguishing factor is the inserted engraved title-page. All internal flaws of the first edition per Smith show in this copy with the exception of replacement "screwed" on page 132 but this first issue point is only present in the very earliest copies. Octavo 8 5/8 x 5 5/8 inches; 218 x 140 mm. xiv 1 errata 1 blank 624 pp. Complete with forty etched plates by Phiz including the frontispiece the vignette title-page and the dark plate "The River."<br> <br> Original publisher's variant binding of green fine-diaper with the blind stamping on the boards matching that of the primary binding of Dombey and Sons. Newer peach endpapers. Edges uncut. Spine lettered in gilt. Spine slightly sunned. Small professional repairs to joints and top and bottom of the spine. Corners lightly bumped. A few spots to cloth. Previous owner's bookplate and small bookseller sticker on front pastedown. Some minor foxing and toning. This is an exceptional example of one of the significant Dickens octavo novels in original publisher's cloth. Housed in a quarter brown cloth over orange paper clamshell.<br> <br> The binding on this copy has different blindstamping on the covers and spine: a wider ornamental frame is present on the covers around a blank center without the globe-shaped design; the spine has no ornaments just simple panels. Plates show the expected foxing typical of this title in places rather heavy. Early owner's ink stamp appears on the first page of text in eight of the parts.<br /> <br /> Housed in a quarter green calf over green cloth slipcase spine with five shallow raised bands red and blue calf labels lettered in gilt in compartments. <br /> <br /> A good "working" copy of Dickens's most autobiographical novel with chipped and repaired wrappers plates intact and with additional ephemeral advertisements of considerable interest. <br /> <br /> Part XIX/XX contains eight unrecorded pages of contemporary ads: Tallis's Acting Edition of the Plays of Shakespeare 2 pp.; The Architectural Antiquities of Athens 2 pp.; Hymns for Sunday Schools 2 pp.; and The Counting House Companion 2 pp. These are not recorded in Hatton & Cleaver as part of the standard collation but are authentic period ephemera almost certainly inserted by the publisher/distributor at the time of issue. Parts XIX/XX with professional repair to corner of rear wrappers. A near fine and complete set albeit without the Lett's Diary fold-out advertisement and eight pages of samples rarely seen in this condition. Chemised in a later quarter purple morocco over decorative paper boards slipcase spine with four raised bands lettered in gilt in compartments. <br /> <br /> A remarkably clean set of one of Charles Dickens's best loved novels.<br /> <br /> David Copperfield is one of the rarer Dickens titles in the original first issue parts.<br /> <br /> "As is well known this novel being largely biographic was the first one written in the first person. The original sales did not exceed 25000 copies its later popularity more than equalized the failure as an early money-maker. With many lovers of the author's works "David Copperfield" ranks as the finest of his writings. With a book which gave to the world such characters as Betsy Trotwood Micawber the Pegottys and Mr. Dick to mention only a few it would have been strange if it had been otherwise. The rather meagre profits again brought to the author the necessity for a personally-owned and conducted periodical and this subsequently formulated itself into his Household Words. Overall a very good copy.<br> <br> "John Macrone was the publisher of Dickens' first book and when he died he left a widow and several children in comparatively destitute circumstances. As a business man he drove what to the young author at that time was a rather hard bargain over a copyright. But the appeal made on behalf of a needy family Dickens could not resist. He was in the middle of 'Master Humphrey's Clock' and regardless of this he undertook the management of 'The Picnic Papers' the proceeds of which were to alleviate hardships. He wrote the Introduction rewrote his unacted farce 'The Lamplighter' altering the name to 'The Lamplighter's Story' edited the balance of the book excepting the third volume and was enabled to place in the hands of the widow the sum of £300" Eckel.<br> <br> Gimbel B109.
