Preliminary pages lightly foxed with some of the preliminary plates showing moderate foxing. This copy is an extra-illustrated copy with 86 total plates bound-in by Phiz i.e. Hablot Knight Brown Robert Seymour as well as one of the two supressed Robert William Buss plates. A beautiful copy.<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> The serial was originally intended to be primarily a vehicle for the cartoons of Robert Seymour until he died by suicide after the first number was published. Robert William Buss then took over but he was inexperienced in steel engraving and had to be replaced. The final choice Hablot Knight Browne "Phiz" was to be Dickens's chosen collaborator for the next two decades. <BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> Very uncommon to find with a plate by Robert William Buss. A fine copy.<br /> <br /> The Guild of Women-Binders was an organization founded to promote and distribute the work of women bookbinders at the turn of the 20th century. It was founded by Frank Francis Karslake in 1898 and disbanded in 1904. It helped sell bindings produced by women binders already practicing and instituted training programs to teach other women. Frank Karslake was a London bookseller and a founder and financial backer of the Hampstead Bindery. At the 1897 Victorian Era Exhibition at Earl's Court he encountered several bindings by women including Annie S. Macdonald on display and his interest was piqued. Soon after he invited several women binders to exhibit their work in his London shop; this "Exhibition of Artistic Bookbinding by Women" which ran from November 1897 to February 1898 garnered a substantial amount of interest from the public and convinced him that promoting women's bookbindings could be a profitable venture if perhaps partially for the novelty. Whatever his motivations Karslake soon began acting as an agent to women binders already practicing such as Annie MacDonald and Edith and Florence de Rheims.<br /> <br /> The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club also known as The Pickwick Papers is the first novel by English author Charles Dickens. His previous work was Sketches by Boz published in 1836 and his publisher Chapman & Hall asked Dickens to supply descriptions to explain a series of comic "cockney sporting plates" by illustrator Robert Seymour and to connect them into a novel. Printed paper spine labels. Boards with wear and spines sunned. Labels are rubbed and occasionally chipped but are mostly still legible. Leaves foxed and toned as usual for American sheets. Volume I with previous owner's old ink signature on front free endpaper. Some mild marginal damp staining to Volume I only touching text in the back advertisements. Volume III with pages 129-132 sprung. Volume IV slightly skewed. Occasion signatures printed on darker brownish-pink paper including Volume II signatures 1-7 and 9 and Volume IV signatures 11 and 13. All volumes housed in a red cloth clamshell with printed paper label. Overall a very good set.<br> <br> "This rare american edition preceded the English book edition by several months. The volumes were issued between November 1836 and December 1837. After the initial publication of volume I the volumes were issued simultaneously with the parts in England. Only about 1500 copies of the first volume were issued and this is now hard to find in the first issue state. And all parts are dated 1836. Parts are generally very clean and in very good condition. Some occasional toning to plates. Some spines repairs to parts V VI VIII X XIV XVI XVII XVIII and XIX/XX. Small repairs to edges of front wrapper of parts XII and XIV. Previous owner's signatures to front wrapper of parts III V VII IX XI XV and XVI. With additional typed notated sheets by Hatton included with the parts. All notes and parts housed in a quarter green morocco clamshell.<br> <br> All front and back wrappers are first issue inside and out except back wrapper of Part 1 Part II front wrapper of Part V.<br> <br> All seven "Addresses" are present as called for including the rare Seymour suicide address in Part II. There are two Part X present and included with the additional Part X including the first issue address without the "dash".<br> <br> Text is true first issue in all parts besides parts I II VIII and IX. In part IX Text with pg 260 and pg 267 points in first issue but pg 261 text is second issue with X2 not N2. The first issue is extremely rare and H&C claims "This point is an extremely rare one and has not been previously recorded. Only twice has it come under the writer's notice."<br> <br> Of the forty-three plates most are in first state with the exception of part I part VI and part IXX/XX. Present part I has included with it an additional set of plates as well. In this final part the frontispiece and Vignette title are in first state but the two other plates are second state. With Part VI it has the the rare first state mispaginated plate number 14 "Mrs. Leo" numbered 169 rather than 154. But with the second state of plate 15 "Seminary" correctly numbered 169. According the Hatton and Cleaver "These mispaginated plates may be considered the rarest items in the whole realm of Pickwick."<br> <br> Part III contains the extremely rare first paid ad in Pickwick and possibly first paid ad in a book the "Toilet" ad present in the preferred Hatton and Cleaver Variant No. 1. Part IV Has the very rare "Pickwick Advertiser" at front. Part V with Grattans ad similar to H&C but slightly different variant. Matches exactly the Bruton copy variant. Part X with the early rare "Lions of London" a definitive point of priority. A printed canceled and endorsed Coutts & Company bank check filled out in autograph on February 8th 1864 and boldly signed by Dickens at bottom with a flourish made payable to "Mr. George Wilson" in the amount of thirty-seven pounds ten shillings. It is additionally endorsed on the verso by Wilson who was the first Regius Professor of Technology at the University of Edinburgh and the founding Director of the what became the National Museum of Scotland. A leading advocate for a new area of biological studies which combined religion Victorian science emerging technologies and Baconian philosophy Wilson was a popular lecturer and author in the United Kingdom praised publicly by Dickens for his educational and empirical endeavors. unknown
