Engraved frontispiece and additional title. <br /> <br /> Originally serialized between 1842 and 1844 Charles Dickens' "The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit" is considered the last of his picaresque novels. Although Dickens thought it to be his best work it turned out to be one of his least successful novels. <br /> <br /> Like nearly all of Charles Dickens' novels "Martin Chuzzlewit" was released to the public in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were disappointing compared to previous works so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to America. This allowed the author to portray the United States which he had visited in 1842 satirically as a near wilderness with pockets of civilization filled with deceptive and self-promoting hucksters. <br /> <br /> The main theme of the novel according to a preface by Dickens is selfishness portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens' great villains Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit. It is dedicated to Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts a friend of Dickens. <br /> <br /> This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with forty steel-engravings including frontispiece and title-page vignette by Hablot K. Brown aka "Phiz." <br /> <br /> First edition in book form with the following first state points: Engraved title leaf with "100£" on the sign-post later corrected to £100; 13-line Errata page xv later expanded to 14 lines. London: Chapman and Hall 1844. First Edition in book form. Very good in elaborate full leather calf covered boards with gilt borders on the front and rear boards five raised bands on the spine with red morocco title labels with gilt text in two of the compartments with gilt tool work in the others. The end sheets are marbled with gilt inner dentelles that have offset to the edges of the first and last free end pages. The top edge of the text block is gilt. The binding is by Ramage of London as can be seen by that firm's gilt embossed line on the front paste down just above the dentelle. There is a small prior owner's book plate on the front pastedown the same name with an address is stamped on the first free end page and the name appears again in ink on the second free end page. While the hinges are tight and sound the joints are rubbed; and have startied. An octavo measuring 8 3/16" tall by 5 1/4" containing 624 pages of text. Illustrated with 40 engraved plates by H. K. Browne "Phiz". This is a mixed state first edition with the transposed pound sign on the sign-post on the vignette title page; but with the second issue fourteen-line errata page. Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards marbled endpapers; some of the plates are browned along the edges the text is especially clean. From the library of William Law with his bookplate. First edition. Many critics have stated that this novel is Dickens at his best. Some further declare that the character of Pecksniff is one of Dickens' most brilliant contributions to English literature. The 100£ reward sign on title is often referred to as a first issue point though Hatton and Cleaver contend that there is no priority and that both plates were used in the monthly parts which preceded this first book edition. "Nicholas Nickleby." short swollen rule "CHARLES DICKENS." all caps "ILLUSTRATED" ORIGINAL EDITION" all caps appear on the spine in gilt. Original chocolate brown endpapers. 9" tall x 5.5" wide. Frontispiece engraved portrait with facsimile signature protective tissue. Dedication preface vii-x Contents xi-xiv List of Plates xv-xvi. 624 pp. blank endpaper colored endpaper. 39 engraved plates each with protective tissue. The title page and frontispiece are identical to that shown in Smith p. 39 lacking a publication date. Most of the internal flaws noted in Smith pp. 41-42 are present. Dickens re-edited his works for this edition with the intention of developing an authoritative version of his works. When Oxford University Press decided to print a set of Dickens' works this was the edition that was chosen. Light soiling light edgewear. Slit along edge of spine cloth with a couple of closed tears needs rebacking. Part of front hinge cracked. Clean solid textblock. Pages uniformly lightly toned. Good condition. John Carter Taste & Technique in Book Collecting quoted in Smith p. ix said "many of Dickens's cloth-bound novels are hardly ever found in fine condition.Cloth cases provided for his usually ample volumes were poor quality so that the collector may find Martin Chuzzlewit and David Copperfield as difficult and Pickwick more difficult to secure in fine original cloth than in the parts." Smith Vol. I 7 - The vignette title with "£100" sign on signpost the first numeral somewhat thickened Smith says all three states of the plate were simultaneous and used interchangeably. Spine loose showing "Cassell's National Library" ad see images Modest rubbing elsewhere light to moderate foxing or soiling at most plates one plate remounted one with closed tear; ownership inscription on flyleaf "John Parris 1847." inked with creasing and sticker residue to same leaf. Just Good because of the loose spine but bright and handsome. Dickens' "adventure" classic and without doubt his most exciting novel and one he loved well himself in which the Ironic Wit sets forth a plot now beloved to novelists and moviemakers alike - the rich old dude who doesn't trust any of his money-grubbing kin and must find a way to select the proper heir.
