A very handsome copy bound from the original parts by Bayntun-Riviere in early 20th century full crushed blue morocco with top edge gilt gilt portrait of Dickens on the front board vignette of Dickens' autograph to the rear board gilt spine compartments gilt borders and dentelles and marbled endpapers. Original wrappers for all 19 parts bound in at rear with a great number of other advertisements mostly for the later parts. Mild offsetting to the front board and the spine gently faded to a paler blue though the gilt remains bright. One corner nicked. Contents remarkably bright and fresh with one repaired tear to the engraved title page. No evident foxing. Overall in very near fine condition. Mixed issue as just about always. 43 inserted illustrations including the frontispiece chiefly by Phiz. "Pickwick" is one of the most difficult Dickens books to collate and we have not endeavored to cross-reference all of the hundreds of possible issue points in Eckel and elsewhere but note that most of the wrappers are in later states per Eckel. A few examples: the first two Parts do not have "With four illustrations by Seymour" and the illustrations themselves bear the hallmarks of Phiz's minor but evident revisions to Seymour's originals though they are not signed by Phiz. Part III does have the two Buss plates. We welcome any questions on various issue points or anything else. Laid in is a small printed note from the bindery describing the materials used in the binding of this book and instructions on proper care and maintenance. Altogether a very stately handsome and clean signed binding of Dickens' first hit novel priced chiefly for the grandeur of the binding and the fresh condition of the text and plates. Handsomely bound and extra illustrated First edition a superb extra illustrated copy with the scarce suites of plates by Thomas Sibson and Frederick William Pailthorpe - neither of which are in the celebrated Suzannet and Vander Poel collections - in a particularly fine binding by Rivière whose work was renowned for "the quality of the materials the forwarding and in the delicacy of the tooling" ODNB. This copy includes the complete suite of Sketches of Expeditions from the Pickwick Club a series of ten unofficial illustrations first published in 1838 to accompany some of the "most striking scenes" of the novel. Also included is Pailthorpe's 1882 series 24 Illustrations to the Pickwick Club all hand-coloured described by Grego as "thoroughly in harmony with the first series of plates" by Phiz and Seymour p. 450. All of the original plates are also present in their early states as called for with no titles or imprints. The Pickwick Papers Charles Dickens's first novel transformed the obscure journalist into England's most famous writer within months. The first monthly instalment was issued in an edition of 1000 copies in April 1836. The work became a publishing sensation after the introduction of Sam Weller in chapter 10 the fourth instalment issued in July 1836 after which the publishers reprinted the earlier instalments so that readers could catch up. The serial was originally intended to be primarily a vehicle for the cartoons of Robert Seymour until he died by suicide after the first number was published. Robert William Buss then took over but he was inexperienced in steel engraving and had to be replaced. The final choice Hablot Knight Browne "Phiz" was to be Dickens's chosen collaborator for the next two decades. Engraved frontispiece vignette title and 41 plates 43 in total as called for. First state of engraved title page Veller and the two suppressed plates by R. W. Buss present facing pages 69 and 74. All 7 Seymour plates are present as called for and the Phiz plates are in the earliest state page numbers without publisher's imprint. A very good copy indeed the binding square and firm with minor wear to the extremities small nick without loss to the upper left corner of the front board. Tiny retailer's label 'G. Simms Manchester' to the upper left corner of the front pastedown the ownership name of 'L. Garnett' in ink to the front endpaper and a pencilled name 'C. Garnett Esq' to the head of the title page. The plates are spotted and darkened at the edges to various degrees; the text pages with just the odd spot of foxing to the margins are otherwise clean throughout. An attractive entirely unsophisticated example of Dickens' first novel in the earliest state containing the suppressed Buss plates and six of the seven Hatton and Cleaver first issue points within the text that of p.25 noted as present in only one copy. First published in 19 monthly parts over 20 months between March 1836 and October 1837. This copy bears a fine publisher's letter: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a meaty Typed Letter Signed from LEC founder George Macy 1900-56: 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 6 June 1932. Addressed to Mortimer H. Hess. Near fine. Paper clip imprint at left margin; single original horizontal light fold. On Limited Editions Club letterhead Macy discusses the firm's fourth series. In part: "Here at the office we are in a dither of excitement over it. For it is obvious that the continued success of this Club has been due to the plan which enabled us to furnish our members with worth-while fine books at low prices. Octavo bound in full polished calf bound by Bayntun with elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands morocco spine labels lettered in gilt double gilt ruling to the front and rear panels marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Forty-three engraved plates by Seymour and Phiz and the two Buss plates which Dickens requested to be removed in subsequent printings on pages 69 and 74 frontispiece and title vignette. In near fine condition bookplate to the front pastedown. Housed in a custom marbled slipcase. A very sharp example. Few first novels have created as much popular excitement as The Pickwick Papers a comic masterpiece that catapulted its twenty-four-year-old author to immediate fame. Readers were captivated by the adventures of the poet Snodgrass the lover Tupman the sportsman Winkle and above all by that quintessentially English Quixote Mr Pickwick and his cockney Sancho Panza Sam Weller. From the hallowed turf of Dingley Dell Cricket Club to the unholy fracas of the Eatanswill election via the Fleet debtors prison characters and incidents sprang to life from Dickenss pen to form an enduringly popular work of ebullient humour and literary invention. Includes 32 coloured plates by Thomas Onwhyn sometimes signed with pseudonym Samuel Weller bound in throughout along with 43 uncoloured illustrated plates by Seymour reengraved by Phiz after his death and Phiz. The Buss plates Dickens' didn't like are not present in this copy replaced by Phiz. Issue points include: Title page states 1837 with no subsequent dates 'E' on page 25 6 line errata includes Directions to the Binder ruined wall on page 43 "holding" in loose type on page 260 x2 on page 261 "Pickvick" line 6 on page 261 Chapter XXVIII repeated on page 282 and 299 Page 342 line 5 reads "S. Veller" "his friends" on page 400 has been corrected the headline of page 432 contains an imperfect 'F' "considding" is misspelled Chapman and Hall hardcover
