New York and London: G. P. Putnam's Sons 1909. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcovers 10 volume matched set containing the entire second series of the Young People's Book-shelf purchased from the original family in the early 1980s. All 10 volumes square bindings and are similar in color. This is pointed out because the photos may shows some variations or bowing of the boards which was only caused by the camera. There are a couple volumes that have a slightly lower condition rating but this is only because of they have small tears at the bottom of the spine cloth. This issue can be seen on the photo showing all 10 spines. All the books have good interior binding there are no hinge cracks no handwriting no bookplates or any other markings. All of the text pages are clean and without issues. Some of the titles would grade as VG only because of the small tear at the bottom of the spine others grade as a high near fine to fine condition. Overall grade of all 10 volumes has been give a low near fine condition to borderline VG. All the boards show various degrees of minor corner bumps/wear and some random scuffs and spots on the exterior page edges. Exterior do show a bit of toning and spotting in spots and all the spines show some sunning. There is no publication date listed but this series was published in 1909 ref: The Publisher's Weekly No. 1976 - Dec 11 1909 page 1881 . If you would like additional photos please feel free to ask. Letter: On letterhead of 11 Devonshire Place London W. 'Tuesday night' no date. Cutting of sheet music with docketted date 1861. Both items in good condition on lightly-aged paper. ONE letter: 1p. 12mo. In a neat and elegant hand it reads: 'Tuesday Night Dear Laura I send the tickets; as Goldsmith sent the portion of Lord Clare's haunch of venison to Sir Joshua - "To paint it or eat it whichever he pleased" I am glad you like the Philharmonia Your affecte. Friend John Hullah'. TWO cutting of sheet music: Written in pencil on one side of a 6.5 x 15 cm piece of paper docketted 'Written by John Hullah 1861 for <>'. John Lawrence Toole comic actor and theatre manager. Autograph Letter Signed to David Cunningham referring to the ‘terrible blow’ of the death of his wife and daughter and enclosing a photographic postcard of Toole in the character of ‘The Don’.
1 March 1889; 44 Maida Vale London W. The card is undated: ‘“Ink Photo.†Sprague & Co. London.’. Toole’s entry in the Oxford DNB describes how ‘Toole was desolate and his health broke’ after the Tooles’ twenty-two year-old daughter Florence died from typhoid fever on in November 1888 contracted a week before when visiting her parents who were performing at Cork. Her mother Toole’s wife Susan died three and a half months later in February 1889. Both letter and card are in good condition. They are enclosed in a grubby envelop with stamp and postmarks addressed to ‘David Cunningham Esq / Belmont / Antrim / Ireland’. Letter and envelope have thick mourning border. ONE: ALS. 1 March 1889. 1p 12mo. Signed ‘J. L. Toole’. He thanks him for his ‘kind and sympathetic letter - the loss of my dear Wife and Daughter has been a terrible blow to me’ and he is going abroad for a few weeks. TWO: Lithographic portrait of Toole in character on 7.5 x 11 cm card. Publishers’ slug at bottom left in tiny capitals: ‘“INK PHOTO.†SPRAGUE & CO. LONDON.’ It depicts Toole dressed as a Victorian schoolmaster with wing-collar shirt and mortar board with right hand holding up pince-nez to his eyes. Beneath the photograph in a facsimile of Toole’s handwriting: ‘Yours truly “The Don†/ J. L. Toole’. See image. 1 March 1889; 44 Maida Vale, London W. The card is undated: ‘“Ink Photo.†Sprague & Co. No place or date. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. The present item is on one side of an 11 x 6.5 cm slip of paper cut from a letter and laid down on a 12.5 x 8 cm piece of card. In good condition lightly aged. Very slightly smudged by Leech. Reads: ‘. very low. until I see / you Believe me / Yours Ever Faithfully / John Leech. / Martin . F. Tupper Esq / &c. &c. &c.’ See Image. Leech illustrated at least one book by Tupper "The Crock of Gold". No place or date. unknown

18 July 1856; on letterhead embossed with crest of St Martin's Hall. One page 12mo. On creased brittle aged paper. Repaired with archival tape on reverse which carries traces of previous mounting. He is sending some lines of introduction 'to my cameo friend who lives in Grafton St Bond St. - No. i.e. number unknown but it is the second or third house on the right going from Bond St.' Hullah's 'Music Hall' - St Martin's Hall in Long Acre - opened in 1850. It burnt to the ground ten years later. 18 July 1856; on letterhead, embossed with crest, of St Martin's Hall. unknown

Autograph Letter Signed 'Westland Marston' from the playwright John Westland Marston inviting Robert Cole to 'a Bachelor party' for the National Magazine.
November 1856. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. The letterhead has been cut away from the first leaf taking with it the number of the month but not affecting the text; otherwise fair on lightly-aged paper. Marston invites Cole to 'a pleasant little meeting of some of our friends and contributors at the Office': 'We are altogether a Bachelor Party and as free from formality as a set of Australian Bush Men or Gold-diggers'. Saunders has also written 'begging the pleasure' of Cole's company. He ends by sending his regards to Cole's daughter whom he hopes has 'recovered from her cough'. November 1856. unknown
