New York and London: G. P. Putnam's Sons 1909. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcovers 10 volume matched set containing the entire second series of the Young People's Book-shelf purchased from the original family in the early 1980s. All 10 volumes square bindings and are similar in color. This is pointed out because the photos may shows some variations or bowing of the boards which was only caused by the camera. There are a couple volumes that have a slightly lower condition rating but this is only because of they have small tears at the bottom of the spine cloth. This issue can be seen on the photo showing all 10 spines. All the books have good interior binding there are no hinge cracks no handwriting no bookplates or any other markings. All of the text pages are clean and without issues. Some of the titles would grade as VG only because of the small tear at the bottom of the spine others grade as a high near fine to fine condition. Overall grade of all 10 volumes has been give a low near fine condition to borderline VG. All the boards show various degrees of minor corner bumps/wear and some random scuffs and spots on the exterior page edges. Exterior do show a bit of toning and spotting in spots and all the spines show some sunning. There is no publication date listed but this series was published in 1909 ref: The Publisher's Weekly No. 1976 - Dec 11 1909 page 1881 . If you would like additional photos please feel free to ask. Externally very smart with slight bumping and rubbing more so to the top edge of Nicholas Nickleby and a few marks to boards. Internally generally firmly bound the front hinges a little weak at points. All three works are bound together as one. 'Alice' is a novel written in 1845 by Jean Wathier De Bèsche. This is the first edition of the work. Three Christmas stories by Charles Dickens surrounding Christmas Eve new Years Eve and The Cricket on the Hearth. The new revised edition with a frontispiece of Dickens. 'Tåget öfver Store Belt' was written by Finnish author Gustaf Henrik Mellin. This work surrounds the military campaign undertaken by the Swedish Empire across the ice between the Danish Islands. Taking place in 1658 this battle concluded with a victory of the Swedish King Charles X Gustav. Mellin was known for his historical novels such as this one. Written in Swedish. Bound in quarter calf with paper-covered boards. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the joints. A little bumping and discolouration to the boards. Internally firmly bound. John Lawrence Toole comic actor and theatre manager. Autograph Letter Signed to David Cunningham referring to the ‘terrible blow’ of the death of his wife and daughter and enclosing a photographic postcard of Toole in the character of ‘The Don’.
1 March 1889; 44 Maida Vale London W. The card is undated: ‘“Ink Photo.†Sprague & Co. London.’. Toole’s entry in the Oxford DNB describes how ‘Toole was desolate and his health broke’ after the Tooles’ twenty-two year-old daughter Florence died from typhoid fever on in November 1888 contracted a week before when visiting her parents who were performing at Cork. Her mother Toole’s wife Susan died three and a half months later in February 1889. Both letter and card are in good condition. They are enclosed in a grubby envelop with stamp and postmarks addressed to ‘David Cunningham Esq / Belmont / Antrim / Ireland’. Letter and envelope have thick mourning border. ONE: ALS. 1 March 1889. 1p 12mo. Signed ‘J. L. Toole’. He thanks him for his ‘kind and sympathetic letter - the loss of my dear Wife and Daughter has been a terrible blow to me’ and he is going abroad for a few weeks. TWO: Lithographic portrait of Toole in character on 7.5 x 11 cm card. Publishers’ slug at bottom left in tiny capitals: ‘“INK PHOTO.†SPRAGUE & CO. LONDON.’ It depicts Toole dressed as a Victorian schoolmaster with wing-collar shirt and mortar board with right hand holding up pince-nez to his eyes.
