With black-and-white etchings by W. H. W. Bicknell and Phiz. The books are in good plus to very good minus condition. Minor shelf wear to the boards and spines. The gilt on the spines is vibrant and clear. Some slight moisture stains to the margins of Volume 2. The textblocks are clean bright unmarked and complete. The bindings are tight. The first edition first issue of Dickens' popular 'Dombey and Son' a classic Victorian novel here with the original illustrations by Phiz. The first edition first issue of this work bound from the parts with stab holes to the gutter. Issue points present: 'Bradbury & Evans' to the title page; the vignette title shows the hook on Captain Cuttle's left arm rather than his right; no quotation marks around the word 'party' to page XV line 2; 'delight' rather than 'joy' to page 284 5 lines up from the bottom; no apostrophe in 'aint' on page 1 10 lines up from the bottom; and 'fidgetty' for 'fidgety' on page 26 on line 11; 'Capatin' for 'Captain' as the final word on page 324. Issue points as stated by John C. Eckel in his 1913 publication 'The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens'.Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved title page and thirty-eight plates. Plate 35 'On the Dark Road' facing page 547 is the first published example of a 'dark plate'.Half-title is present.Bound without the errata slip."Dombey and Son" is about Paul Dombey the owner of a shipping company who intends to pass down ownership of his company to his son ignoring his daughter Florence. The novel tells the story of their family and their hopes and fearsDickens is one of the most popular authors of the Victorian age. His novels show the grimy side of poverty and prosperity in Victorian England showing poor social conditions alongside repulsive characters.Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne most often known by his pen-name 'Phiz'. As Phiz he illustrated many of Dickens' novels including 'David Copperfield' 'Dombey and Son' and 'Bleak House' as well as illustrating for 'Punch' throughout his life. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards with new endpapers. Externally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Light marks and discolouration to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and generally clean with the occasional spot age-toning and spots heavier to the plates frontispiece and title page more heavier spotted. ‎<p>1874 hardcover as pictured. This beautiful small volume is part of a multivolume Dicken's set. It is in fairly good condition given its age. Three quarter bound in marbled paper and tan leather with gold stamping. Spine with raised bands black and red stamped paste on labels and head/tail bands. Binding is firm. Marbled boards are lightly rubbed. Leather is scuffed in a few places. Leather spine is age tanned and dry with a few small cracks. Marbled endpapers and edges of text block. Text is age tanned but appears otherwise clean and unmarked. Includes 12 b&w illustrations by Phiz one of which is missing its tissue guard. We have several other volumes from the <em>Carleton's New Illustrated Edition </em>set in our Biblio store. These are listed by title.
