Octavo 8 3/4" x 5 3/4" bound in half calf over green cloth gilt tooled and lettered spine. First edition in book form first issue with: signature BB2 misprinted as "B2" at page 371; "William" instead of "Frederick" on page 317 line 27; and the name "Rigaud" appears instead of "Blandois" on pages 469 470 472 and 473. Several errors noted in three-line errata on page xiv. Podeschi A141.<br /><br /><i>Little Dorrit</i> is a novel by Charles Dickens that was originally published in nineteen monthly installments each consisting of 32 pages with two illustrations by Hablot Knight Browne whose pen name was Phiz. Each installment cost a shilling except for the last a double issue which cost two shillings as a serial between 1855 and 1857. It satirizes the shortcomings of both government and society including the institution of debtors' prisons where debtors were imprisoned unable to work until they repaid their debts. The prison in this case is the Marshalsea where Dickens's own father had been imprisoned. Dickens is also critical of the lack of a social safety net the treatment and safety of industrial workers as well the bureaucracy of the British Treasury in the form of his fictional "Circumlocution Office". The first Peterson volume of LITTLE DORRIT in fact the first in book form anywhere was Vol I of the two-volume duodecimo edition published in November 1856 during serialization; in June 1857 once serialization was complete Peterson quickly published the novel in numerous duodecimo including Vol II of the above and octavo formats. One octavo double-column format consists of 317 pages of text -- issued first without illustrations in wrappers or in cloth and soon thereafter with plates inserted. Another octavo format this one has 376 pages of text with the illustrations integrated into the text some sideways. This copy is in contemporary half calf with marbled boards page edges and endpapers. Peterson advertised that his octavo editions of Dickens were available to buyers in four different bindings of half calf in addition to cloth and we have seen numerous volumes in this exact binding -- leading us to believe that this is a publisher's original binding. Stab-holes are evident in the gutter of all leaves -- possibly indicating that it was originally bound up by Peterson in wrappers then put into his standard half calf.
