‎1839 Chapman and Hall first collected edition. 526 pages with 40 illustrations by George Cruikshank. Original 1839 binding uncommon with vertical grained cloth and an embossed design on the board panels. <br /><br />Condition of the book is Good. Condition issues are as noted below. Also please carefully review the listing photos.<br /><br />1 The board cloth shows significant wear. The color of the cloth has faded. The cloth has split where the board panels join with the spine. Four small stains from old tape repairs are visible at the corners of both the front and back boards. <br /><br />2 Portions of the board cloth are missing on the spine. The top edge of the spine cloth is gone. There also is a long thin piece of cloth missing on the spine's lower right edge. This fragment of cloth has been retained see last photo and could be used if the spine cloth is to be repaired.<br /><br />3 The front endpapers contain the prior owner's bookplate and signature. The owner was Basil Thomas Woodd an attorney and Member of Parliament.<br /><br />4 All of Cruikshank's illustrations are present. The plates were printed on different paper stock than the text portions of the book. The plate edges show browning. The actual illustrations centered on each page are not affected by the browning.<br /><br />5 The preliminary leaves including the two frontis illustrations show moderate foxing. Interior pages are relatively free of foxing.<br /><br />In sum the book has significant condition issues as might be expected for a 180 year old book that has been preserved as originally published.<br /><br />Please message me with any questions.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /> Chapman and Hall hardcover‎

Finely bound in contemporary three-quarter dark green calf marbled boards and page edges spine titled and elaborately stamped in gilt. Very good with wear and rubbing to spine ends edges and boards frontispiece with repaired tear some foxing to frontis and plates. Overall a very attractive bright and very clean copy. This collection of fiction first published as a series of short pieces in The Monthly Magazine and other periodicals was re-issued in book form in 1836 and stands as Dickens's first foray into authorship. The pieces were penned under Dickens's pseudonym "Boz" and offer insight into his observations of the streets of Victorian London and its inhabitants. The humorous and unforgiving social critique includes chapters such as "Thoughts about People" a grim take on the life of a working man in London as one that "cannot be said to be forgotten when he dies for no one remembered him when he was alive" and "The Broker's Man" a long lament by a character called Mr. Bung on the trials he faces working for a broker. The original two-volume set and its later-published third volume were illustrated by notable political cartoonist and illustrator of the time George Cruikshank who worked closely with Dickens to portray each character and scene exactly as he envisioned them. Second series" of this collection of short pieces of literary journalism that marked the launch of the young author's meteoric career. Crown 8vo 194 x 120mm: 4viii3771pp with 10 steel-engraved plates including frontispiece and vignette title page dated 1836 by George Cruikshank. Complete with catalogue of Macrone's publications dated December 1836. Page vi is misnumbered "viii;" list of illustrations gives "Vauxhall Gardens by Day" twice in error and omits final plate "Mr. Minns and his Cousin." All required first edition points present per Smith who notes: "it does not appear possible to associate definitely early or late copies totally with states of the spine endpapers pale yellow or blue location of the plates and whether or not they contain the volume number the absence or presence of the list of illustrations and internal flaws." Publisher's original moderate red morocco-grain cloth covers bordered and decorated in blind with wreath centerpieces black pigmented panels on spine lettered in gilt yellow coated end papers. Blind-embossed in tiny type centered at foot of front cover: "Remnant & Edmonds London" see Ramsden p. 121 and Jamieson p. 11. Housed in made-to-order folding box. Excellent original cloth barely any lightening plates moderately foxed but mostly marginally so pages generally clean bright and virtually free of foxing. Original spines very expertly relaid retaining "dark pigments" for both lettering pieces. The fragile cloth makes this second series devilishly difficult to obtain in such collectible condition. In February 1836 John Macrone published Sketches by Boz illustrative of Every-day Life and Every-day People which came to be known as the "first series." This "second series" appeared in December. Sadleir ranked both series on his list of Dickens raities although in our experience the second series is now the more elusive. "Dickens originally published most of the pieces collected under Sketches in a wide variety of newspapers and periodicals between December 1833 and December 1836 at the beginning struggling just to appear in print. . . .
