The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby
London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First edition. Very Good. A rare copy of Nickleby in the original publisher's cloth. This copy without some of the earliest issue points: pg. 123 and pg. 160 with corrected spellings first four plates without Chapman and Hall imprints. A Very Good copy with wear to the cloth along the lower spine hinge and at the board edges. Original yellow end-papers with some splitting at the inner hinges. Moderate foxing to the plates pages generally clean. But on the whole and authentic and attractive copy of the first edition in book form. "Dickens' third novel has always been a favourite with the general public. Indeed it was the book's huge sales that enabled Dickens to give up parliamentary reporting and become a full-time writer. The theatricality of the novel attracted new and more appreciative critical attention and it demonstrates the inextricable link between public and private" Bannerjee. A satire tackling the injustices faced by both women and men within the Victorian class system that relied so heavily the social status of the patriarch the novel follows Nicholas Nickleby as he seeks to support his mother and sister after his father's death. When Nicholas' father dies after losing all of the family's money it is up to the young man to emerge as the new and more morally sound patriarch. Dashing and likable Nicholas ultimately prevails dodging shady characters along the way and securing a respectable life in Devonshire for his extended family. A favorite among Dickens' works Nicholas Nickleby has been adapted into a much-loved film. Very Good. Chapman and Hall unknown

The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby Extra Illustrated
London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Browne Hablot K. 'Phiz"; Meadows Kenney. First printing mixed state octavo size 707 pp. This was writer Charles Dickens' 1812-1870 third novel widely anticipated and loved. He is often considered the greatest of the Victorian era novelists blending drama and comedy into compelling stories. In this novel Dickens explores the social issues that his works are known for such as harsh boarding schools the privilege of royal title and wealth social customs of the day and the plight of the working class. The plot focuses on the hardships courageously navigated by young Nicholas Nickleby after his father passes away. The extra illustrations provided were drawn by Joseph Kenny Meadows 1790 - 1874 he is best known for his drawings published in Punch magazine. He was a friend of Charles Dickens and several other writers of the period. These caricatures add a visual element to the characters depicted by Dickens n.b. above information from Wiki. ___DESCRIPTION: Half red morocco leather over marbled paper boards six compartments on spine five with gilt title and author in gilt to one compartment embossed decorative and gilt borders to front and rear boards all edges marbled frontis of a young Charles Dickens supplied thirty-nine plates by Hablot K. Browne "Phiz" and twenty-four plates of various characters in the novel by Kenny Meadows the extra plates. Dickens Charles
The Life and Adventures of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT
1844. With Illustrations by Phiz. New-York: published by Harper & Brothers 1844. 2 preliminary pages of undated ads. Original vertically-ribbed blind-stamped purple-brown cloth. Very early American edition second by five days. While the UK edition was being published in 20-in-19 monthly serial parts Harper published the novel in seven serial parts six consisting of three UK parts each followed by the seventh consisting of Part 19/20 -- issued irregularly between March 1843 and July 1844. Harper's final part was issued on July 22nd and three days later the 25th they came out with the same leaves bound in cloth as here priced at $1.00 -- containing the same 14 plates in seven facing pairs as had appeared serially. But J. Winchester of New York after running the novel serially in his monthly "The New World" magazine came out with his edition bound in wrappers and with no illustrations on July 20th -- priced at just 25 cents which Winchester proudly proclaimed to be "the cheapest novel ever issued from the press." MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT in Harper's seven actual wrappered parts is now exceedingly rare -- according to a Harper employee "the sale of the work in numbers was chiefly by newsboys on the street." Harper's book edition did not sell well -- partly because its price was four times Winchester's price but also because the American public did not care for Dickens's criticisms of America in his recent AMERICAN NOTES and in the early chapters of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT. This copy is in the secondary binding state used for leaves not yet bound up at year-end by which time copies were being sold for 75 or 50 cents: it is identical to the first except that the date at the foot of the spine reads 1845 rather than 1844. Condition is very good minor wear at the binding extremities short tear at the top of the rear joint light cover soil. Smith pp 199-206; Podeschi Yale A74 disbound; Wilkins p. 24.

hardcover

London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First edition. Very Good. Bound in the original publisher's deluxe full green morocco binding gilt titles stamped in gilt and blind yellow end papers all edges gilt. A Very Good copy with creasing and wear to the spine one short tear at the head some foxing to the plates. Armorial bookplate of Henry Gillett on the front paste-down. Bound without the half-title otherwise complete with the engraved frontis and 39 plates by Phiz. Nicholas Nickleby Dickens' third novel was originally serialized in monthly parts then issued as a book in cloth. The publishers also had a small number of copies bound up in the present morocco both for presentation - a census of copies inscribed by Dickens on publication show them all to be in the green morocco binding - and for sale to the public at a higher price. This copy with most of the issue points outlined in Smith but with a few typographical errors corrected. When Nicholas' father dies after losing all of the family's money it is up to the young man to emerge as the new and more morally sound patriarch. Dashing and likable Nicholas ultimately prevails dodging shady characters along the way and securing a respectable life in Devonshire for his extended family.
