Charles John Huffam Dickens 7 February 1812 � 9 June 1870 was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's bestknown fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are still widely read today. Born in Portsmouth Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education he edited a weekly journal for 20 years wrote 15 novels five novellas hundreds of short stories and nonfiction articles lectured and performed readings extensively. He was an indefatigable letter writer and campaigned vigorously for children's rights education and other social reforms.He was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. ‎PLATES DESIGNED AND ETCHED BY GEORGE CRUIKSHANK - Rare set of Separately issued Plates for Oliver Twist‎

‎London: Richard Bentley 1838. Unrecorded perhaps unique surviving set of Cruikshank's illustrations to Oliver Twist issued by the book's publisher as a loose possibly promotional set simultaneous with first publication. $1750 20 plates 150x243mm are loosely contained in a bifolium printed wrapper which has separated along the spine. This bears a modified version of the title page of the book's first edition in its first state. Dickens' authorship is referred to as 'Boz' but in place of the book's 'Three Volumes' designation we are offered: 'Plates Designed and Etched by George Cruikshank.' 20 plates are present all browned and spotted with a little scuffing to edges and corners. The wrappers do not state the number of plates to be issued in this sequence so it's not possible to tell whether the 20 present here are complete in themselves. By comparison with the 24 plates which appear in the first edition of the book this sequence which begins with the iconic image: 'Oliver asks for more' has 4 fewer than the printed book lacking the plates dated to August 1837 Oliver Recovering and Mr Claypole March 1838 as well as the last two plates: Fagin in the Condemned Cell and Rose Maylie and Oliver - the cancelled Fireside plate. The paper-size of these images is significantly larger than that of the first edition closer to that issued in the first serial publication Bentley's Miscellany making this collection a fascinating hybrid of first serial and first book publication. Oliver Twist was Dickens' second novel after Pickwick Papers and uses the orphan's compelling story as a vehicle for social commentary. ‎This is a scarce very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz "Boz" was the pen name of Dickens. 1837; Carey Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches from Bentley's Miscellany and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." There are 11 stories in all - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Worn corners the tips of the boards are exposed; 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine small cloth tears at the bottom edge. The front board bows at the center just a bit. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end papers. The pages are in good condition with only some occasional light foxing heaviest on the title page - see photo and staining. There are a few characters written in pencil on the front pastedown and a name written in pen on a front end paper. Some fading of the spine label with a tear at the top edge and along the center.
