London: Chapman and Hall 1837. Dickens's first novel Octavo 212 x 450 mm. Contemporary black quarter calf marbled paper boards spine lettered in gilt elaborate gilt and blind stamping to spine gilt rule to edges of calf on boards marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece vignette title page 41 plates. Bookplate to front pastedown. Some wear and rubbing to extremities slight scuffs to boards oxidisation to plates as often a very good copy. First edition early issue with most of the first issue points. All the plates are in early states with page numbers as called for but no titles or imprints and the vignette title page with the signboard reads "Veller" corrected to "Weller" in later issues. Robert Seymour provided the illustrations until he committed suicide; Robert William Buss then took over but he was inexperienced in steel engraving and had to be replaced. The final choice Hablot Knight Browne "Phiz" was to be Dickens's chosen collaborator for the next two decades. For later issues Phiz re-engraved the Seymour plates and entirely replaced the Buss plates. This copy includes the original plates by Buss and Seymour. Smith I.3. London: Chapman and Hall, hardcover

With 43 illustrations by R.Seymour and Phiz London including the second state of most of the Seymour plates the Phiz replacement plates for the Buss plates with captions instead of numbers below images and mixed early states of the remaining Phiz plates all prior to Phiz's major re-engravings with the early page numbers instead of the later captions and imprints below the images including simultaneous steels of the frontispiece and vignette title. As expected in the first edition in book form the text points are in the second state showing corrections. Some wear a few small tears on pages some darkening of pages foxing. Dickens a struggling young writer was commissioned to write captions for a series of hunting prints being done by the artist Robert Seymour. Slowly the prints began to take a secondary role as Dickens allowed his imagination free rein. Before the project was completed Seymour committed suicide and a second artist had to be commissioned.
