The Posthumous Papers Of The Pickwick Club
The Modern Library New York. Hardcover no dustjacket. Reading copy. The Pickwick Papers and its ensuing popularity came about almost by accident. Dickens a struggling young writer was commissioned to write captions for a series of hunting prints being done by the artist Robert Seymour. Slowly the prints began to take a secondary role as Dickens allowed his imagination free rein. Before the project was completed Seymour committed suicide and a second artist had to be commissioned. By this time however The Pickwick Papers had taken London by storm. The Modern Library, New York hardcover

THE POSTHUMOUS PAPERS OF THE PICKWICK CLUB: CONTAINING A FAITHFUL RECORD OF THE PERAMBULATIONS PERILS TRAVELS ADVENTURES AND SPORTING TRANSACTIONS OF THE CORRESPONDING MEMBERS. EDITED BY "BOZ."
Philadelphia: Carey Lea & Blanchard 1837. Five volumes. Original linen and boards paper spine labels. Some modest spotting edgewear and soiling to boards backstrips modestly soiled and sunned two labels eroded volume one lacks a rear endsheet some occasional foxing or staining but all things considered for this work a good to very good set. Third American edition of the first volume second American edition of volume two with 'sporting' not split at end of line on the title-page first American editions of volumes three through five. As with most extant sets assembled by a previous owner with differing pencil ownership signatures in a couple volumes. The first edition i.e. printing of the first volume is quite scarce having been issued in a printing of only 1500 copies. As the following volumes were published serially the first and second volumes were reprinted and one often finds mixed sets. As these volumes were set up and printed as the parts were received from London the text of four parts per volume a very sound case has been made most recently by Richard Loomis in his admirable catalogue of the McGuire collection that "it is.quite certain that four of the five Philadelphia volumes preceded the issuance of" the first British edition in book form. Dickens Charles
The Posthumous Papers of The Pickwick Club. With forty-three Illustrations by R. Seymour and "Phiz."
London: Chapman and Hall 1837 Illustrated by Robert Seymour Robert William Buss and Hablot Knight Browne Phiz. First edition in book form. Bound in 3/4 gilt stamped morocco recased over cloth with marbled boards and page edges. Binding is moderately rubbed and tight. Scattered foxing mostly to illustrations with some loss and old tape repairs to several pages. Still a very presentable copy of an early Dickens first edition. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was originally published serially in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly installments from April 1836 - November 1837. This first edition was published shortly after on November 17 1837. The project was originally conceived by illustrator Robert Seymour who envisioned a series of humorous stories about the adventures of amateur Cockney sportsmen. Chapman and Hall employed Dickens to create a cohesive narrative that provided a background story for the illustrations. However the bold young writer purportedly wrote with little regard to the illustrations even making suggestions for their alterations at times much to Seymour's displeasure. After the second installment was completed Seymour committed suicide and was replaced in the Pickwick project by Robert Buss. However Dickens found Buss's work unfavorable and Hablot Knight Browne who would continue to illustrate many of Dickens' subsequent novels took over as the Pickwick illustrator. Smith comments on the complicated history of Pickwick's illustration: "The history of the creation of the plates is perhaps as complex as that of the printing of the text and different states of a plate and different plates for the same subject may vary from one bound copy to anotherseldom in fact are all of the plates located in copies in the original cloth or rebound ones" which he partially attributes to the lack of a list of illustrations. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. Illus. by Browne Hablot Knight; Buss Robert William; Seymour Robert. London: Chapman and Hall hardcover
