The Readings Of Charles Dickens As Condensed By Himself Ten Pieces In One Volume
Boston MA: Lee & Shepard 1879. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo 6.75 - 7.75'' tall. "Green cloth gold spine decor. Nice Firm copy ! Light general wear. Previous owner name. Front board has 2 short cloth tears near middle. Foxing on endpapers. Works as condensed by Dickens for his readings. Contents: Nicholas Nickleby; Little Dombey; Bob Sawyer's Party; Christmas Carol; Doctor Marigold; Boots at the Holly-Tree Inn; Nicholas Nickleby; Bardell and Pickwick; David Copperfield; Mrs. Gamp. On 9 November 1867 Dickens sailed from Liverpool for his second American reading tour. Landing at Boston he devoted the rest of the month to a round of dinners with such notables as Ralph Waldo Emerson Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and his American publisher James Thomas Fields. In early December the readings began - he was to perform 76 readings netting 19000 from December 1867 to April 1868 - and Dickens spent the month shuttling between Boston and New York where alone he gave 22 readings at Steinway Hall for this period. Although he had started to suffer from what he called the 'true American catarrh' he kept to a schedule that would have challenged a much younger man. On 23 April he boarded his ship to return to Britain barely escaping a Federal Tax Lien against the proceeds of his lecture tour. . ISBN: B000XYAWK6. Catalogs: Fiction Antique. Dickens Charles 1812 1870
The selected letters of Charles Dickens / edited by Jenny Hartley
Oxford ; New York : Oxford University Press 2012. First Edition. An exceptional copy; fine in an equally fine dust wrapper. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight bright clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new.; 8vo 8"" - 9"" tall; 458 pages; Physical description; xxxv 458 p. ; 24 cm. ""What was it like to be Charles Dickens His letters are the nearest we can get to a Dickens autobiography: vivid close-up snapshots of a life lived at maximum intensity. This is the first selection to be made from the magisterial twelve-volume British Academy Pilgrim Edition which contains over 14000 of Dickens's letters. The 450 letters included here have been cherry-picked to give readers the best essence of the 'Sparkler of Albion'""-- Dickens was a man with ten times the energy of ordinary mortals. There seem to have been twice the number of hours in his day and he threw himself into letter-writing as he did into everything else. This eagerly awaited selection takes us straight to the heart of his life to show us Dickens at first hand. Here he is writing out of the heat of the moment: as a novelist journalist and magazine editor; as a social campaigner and traveller in Europe and America and as friend lover husband and father. Reading and writing letters punctuated the rhythms of Dickens's day. 'I walk about brimful of letters' he told a friend. He claimed to write 'at the least a dozen a day'. Sometimes it was a chore but more often a pleasure: an outlet for high spirits sparkling wit and caustic commentary - always as seen through his highly individual and acutely observing eye. Whether you dip in or read straight through this selection of his letters creates afresh the brilliance of being Dickens and the sheer pleasure of being in his company. Subjects; Dickens Charles 1812-1870. - Correspondence. Novelists English - 19th century - Correspondence. Authors English - 19th century - Correspondence. Dickens Charles
The Seven Poor Travellers Embellished with illustrations by Arthur Hogg
New York: James Pott & Co. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1908. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. 71 & 1 pages; Publisher's red cloth gilt lettering on spine and front cover with gilt-stamped floral decorations and rules stamped in blind. Pale grey-green floral patterned endpapers top edges gilt. The plain glassine dust jacket shows only minor toning and while it is impossible to prove that it is original it has clearly been wrapped around this copy for a very long time and is consistent with the nature of this small "gift book." Four full page colour tinted illustrations by Arthur Hogg. The title page does not specify a date; the date of 1908 is determined by a brief review and notice in the November 1908 issue of Bertram Waldron Matz's 'The Dickensian: A Magazine for Dickens Lovers and Monthly Record of the Dickens Fellowship". OCLC: 34981349 with a single copy located only -- Schultz Library Sonoma State University California. Inexplicably the University's Library Catalogue suggests a publishing date of "1850-1870." While the printing firm of William Brendon and Son Ltd. in Plymouth England whose tiny slug appears at the bottom of the final page was in business during that time the style and technical nature of Arthur Hogg's tinted plates are all consistent with the issuing date of 1908 suggested in the 'Dickensian." There Matz's brief review p. 287 cites the London co-publisher Sisley Ltd. and his description certainly remains true after a century -- "daintily produced in a miniature size suitable for slipping into an envelope and consequently a good substitute for sending as a Christmas card to Dickensian friends. The illustrations by Arthur Hogg are very pleasing one has a portrait of Dickens drinking the toast 'On earth peace goodwill towards men.' " The plate appears in our book on page 21. Confirmation of the 1908 date of publication appears on page 307 in this same November issue of 'The Dickensian' -- as the first book on the list of "Dickensiana Month by Month." The British Library is the only location of the British issue in OCLC see OCLC Number: 558209404 which also confirms the 1908 date. The "Seven Poor Travellers" text originally appeared in 1854 in the fifth of the nine Christmas numbers of 'Household Words' the weekly periodical Dickens had founded in 1850. This small 1908 volume contains only the parts actually written by Charles Dickens arranged here as three chapers -- Ch. I. In the old city of Rochester -- ch. II. The Story of Richard Doubledick -- ch. III. The Road." . James Pott & Co. hardcover
