DICKENS Charles.
The Posthumous Papers of The Pickwick Club.
London: Chapman and Hall 1838. Octavo 220 x 145 mm. Contemporary half calf for Hatchard and Co marbled sides raised bands and decoration in gilt tan morocco label green endpapers. Etched frontispiece and titlepage vignette with 41 plates by R. Seymour and Phiz H. K. Browne. Ownership mark on verso of front endpaper dating to 1925. Spine beginning to crease some wear to covers light rubbing to extremities slight foxing on plates. An excellent copy. First edition in book form of the work that transformed Dickens from an obscure journalist into England's most famous writer in a matter of months. This is a later issue with the two Buss plates replaced with those by Phiz facing pages 52 and 74 titles and imprints for the plates and the vignette title page with the signboard reading "Weller" spelled "Veller" in early issues; the letterpress title page here is also in secondary state dated 1838 though this need not necessarily imply that this copy was issued in that calendar year. Victorian publishers habitually post-dated books that they hoped would sell well over the Christmas season and into the New Year. Originally published as a serial in 19 parts between April 1836 and November 1837 The Pickwick Papers was Dickens's first novel. Smith I.3; Eckel 17-58. London: Chapman and Hall, hardcover

The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club.
London: Chapman and Hall 1837. Dickens's first novel Octavo 212 x 450 mm. Contemporary black quarter calf marbled paper boards spine lettered in gilt elaborate gilt and blind stamping to spine gilt rule to edges of calf on boards marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece vignette title page 41 plates. Bookplate to front pastedown. Some wear and rubbing to extremities slight scuffs to boards oxidisation to plates as often a very good copy. First edition early issue with most of the first issue points. All the plates are in early states with page numbers as called for but no titles or imprints and the vignette title page with the signboard reads "Veller" corrected to "Weller" in later issues. Robert Seymour provided the illustrations until he committed suicide; Robert William Buss then took over but he was inexperienced in steel engraving and had to be replaced. The final choice Hablot Knight Browne "Phiz" was to be Dickens's chosen collaborator for the next two decades. For later issues Phiz re-engraved the Seymour plates and entirely replaced the Buss plates. This copy includes the original plates by Buss and Seymour. Smith I.3. London: Chapman and Hall, hardcover
