London: The Piccadilly Fountain Press 1932. Original gilt lettered green cloth. With 43 illustrations by R. Seymour R. W. Buss and "Phiz" after the original engravings plus reproductions of parts of the manuscript. Volume 1 no longer has a dust jacket and its rear board is noticeably stained and spotted. Light bumping to head and foot of spines lower edge of rear board of volume 2 cloth cover is slightly split leading corners and lower inside corner of vol. 2. Minimal rubbing to the extremities and the spines remain very tight indeed. Volume 2's blue dust jacket is grubby and water damaged with significant wear and chipping and tears along the edges. Age spotting to page block endpapers and plates. All of the pages are intact. Age stain on endpapers. Text remains clear and binding is tight throughout. Pages are slightly tanned. Page edges are roughly cut. Many sections in Vol 2 are uncut. Some light foxing to page edges. Overall in pretty good shape. T. Hardcover. Good/Good. Illus. by Seymour R.; Buss R. W.; "Phiz". Used. Marbled endpapers top edge gilt others untrimmed five raised bands with gilt title on spine borders between leather and cloth with double ruled in gilt. Limited to 2000 copies. 430 and 439 pages respectively plus and the end of volume II a facsimile page of the handwritten manuscript and a cover of a one of the parts of the original serial publication of this work presumably a facsimile as well. Illustrated by engravings from Seymour Browne Leech and Buss including fronitspieces and vignette title in volume I. Previous owner bookplate that of a prominent Coloradan of the turn of the 20th century on both front endpapers and his name with a note disclosing from whom he received the book a gift on the first blank of each volume. Mild scattered foxing toning to the tissue guards very light edge and extremity wear and insignificant scuffing to the spine bands. Otherwise very nice with sound bindings. Publisher's blind-stamped dark green cloth with central wreath device backstrip ruled in five compartments lettered in gilt to the second and fourth panels pale yellow-coloured coated endpapers edges untrimmed. Some spotting within spine is tightly rounded and many sections are completely unopened. Inner joints just starting; cloth is particularly bright. A lovely near fine copy in the same format as the first edition the pagination and plates are the same and the cloth is similarly styled. Listed in BBC's Big Read 200 Best Novels 2003. Philadelphia: Carey Lea and Blanchard 1838. xii 388p. engraved plates as called for inserted yellow stock two engraved title pages versions by each artist and printed title leaf with presswork credit verso; first American illustrated edition cased into modern half calf boards over homemade marbling. Textblock was printed on pulpy soft paperstock and is splotched with foxing throughout two original blanks fore and aft remain these adhered to marbled endsheets. Complete text; but misbound into this sequence: roman pagination is followed by pp.13-84 95-96 87-94 85-86 thereafter correct. There are also two torn leaves see 95/96 partly repaired and gutter of 386-87 where there is a gaping but not-at-risk crack. The modern perhaps mid-20thC casing is polished roan has five raised bands and no titling or any label and is unruled; a capable but ugly amateur production with one small corner-tip mouse-gnawed. Quite sound and more or less presentable. Carey, Lea and Blanchard unknown

Original 3 x 4" pencil sketch with colors of Mr. Pickwick signed and inscribed "To Julian Samuel Nov. 1910 Cecil Aldin". Pictorial cloth and boards. 24 full page Color Plates and numerous b/w drawings. Some extremity rubbing/wear. Both volumes rebacked with original backstrips overlaid. Volume 1 backstrip has some areas chipped away including a 2 x 1/2" section at the top edge of the spine near the front board affecting 3 letters of the title and some additional chipping at the head and tail of spine not too obtrusive as the cloth is closely matching in color. Untrimmed pages. 4to: 7 3/4" x 11 1/4" tall; 906 pages in all . Chapman & Hall hardcover
