‎The Life and Adventures of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT‎

‎1844. With Illustrations by Phiz. New-York: published by Harper & Brothers 1844. 2 preliminary pages of undated ads. Original vertically-ribbed blind-stamped purple-brown cloth. Very early American edition second by five days. While the UK edition was being published in 20-in-19 monthly serial parts Harper published the novel in seven serial parts six consisting of three UK parts each followed by the seventh consisting of Part 19/20 -- issued irregularly between March 1843 and July 1844. Harper's final part was issued on July 22nd and three days later the 25th they came out with the same leaves bound in cloth as here priced at $1.00 -- containing the same 14 plates in seven facing pairs as had appeared serially. But J. Winchester of New York after running the novel serially in his monthly "The New World" magazine came out with his edition bound in wrappers and with no illustrations on July 20th -- priced at just 25 cents which Winchester proudly proclaimed to be "the cheapest novel ever issued from the press." MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT in Harper's seven actual wrappered parts is now exceedingly rare -- according to a Harper employee "the sale of the work in numbers was chiefly by newsboys on the street." Harper's book edition did not sell well -- partly because its price was four times Winchester's price but also because the American public did not care for Dickens's criticisms of America in his recent AMERICAN NOTES and in the early chapters of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT. This copy is in the secondary binding state used for leaves not yet bound up at year-end by which time copies were being sold for 75 or 50 cents: it is identical to the first except that the date at the foot of the spine reads 1845 rather than 1844. Condition is very good minor wear at the binding extremities short tear at the top of the rear joint light cover soil. Smith pp 199-206; Podeschi Yale A74 disbound; Wilkins p. 24. unknown books‎

‎The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby‎

‎London: Chapman & Hall 1839 First edition. Illustrations by Hablot K. Browne "Phiz". Finely bound in 19th century full polished green calf spine lettered and decorated in gilt gilt turn-ins all edges gilt marbled endpapers. An excellent copy extremities lightly rubbed with the usual foxing and some staining to the plates text otherwise very clean and bright. A very attractive copy. Nicholas Nickleby is Dickens's third novel which he began writing while Oliver Twist was still in progress. Characteristic of Dickens's work Nicholas Nickleby is a whirlwind of social satire with a complex network of characters and plotlines. The book highlights the controversy that surrounded Yorkshire boarding schools in the 1830s as news stories brought to light the abuse and neglect that was common among these institutions known for accepting unwanted children from parents who paid high prices to send them anywhere they could. Dickens's villain Wackford Squeers was based on Walter Shaw the real-life headmaster of Bowes Academy one of the schools reported for allowing rampant abuse of its pupils. The book has since been adapted for theater television and film and remains one of Dickens's most well-known works. This first edition in book form was bound from the publisher's parts with the stab holes from the original wrappers present and all the points called for by Smith meaning that it is one of the earlier issues of the first edition. Furthermore this copy was bound from the earliest states of the publisher's parts for as Hatton and Cleaver note "There are two distinguishing features only which point out early printings from later issues:" the substitution of "visiter" for "sister" on page 123 and "latter" instead of "letter" on page 160; both of these errors were corrected while Nicholas Nickleby was issued in parts causing Smith to cite these points as "in some copies." This copy has both "visiter" and "latter" deeming it a scarce first edition bound from the first state of the publisher's parts. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. London: Chapman & Hall hardcover books‎

‎The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First edition. Bound by Bayntun in three-quarter red calf over cloth boards all edges gilt. Spine a bid faded internally an excellent copy. Complete with the half-title and all 40 plates engraved by Phiz. Likely washed at the time of binding as most plates show little to no foxing. Most of Smith's internal flaws are found including the ones of pgs. 123 and 160 only found in the earliest copies bound from the parts.

Nicholas Nickleby Dickens' third novel was originally serialized in monthly parts then issued as a book in cloth. The publishers also had a small number of copies bound up in the present morocco both for presentation - a census of copies inscribed by Dickens on publication show them all to be in the green morocco binding - and for sale to the public at a higher price. "Dickens' third novel has always been a favourite with the general public. Indeed it was the book's huge sales that enabled Dickens to give up parliamentary reporting and become a full-time writer. The theatricality of the novel attracted new and more appreciative critical attention and it demonstrates the inextricable link between public and private" Bannerjee. A satire tackling the injustices faced by both women and men within the Victorian class system that relied so heavily the social status of the patriarch the novel follows Nicholas Nickleby as he seeks to support his mother and sister after his father's death. When Nicholas' father dies after losing all of the family's money it is up to the young man to emerge as the new and more morally sound patriarch. Dashing and likable Nicholas ultimately prevails dodging shady characters along the way and securing a respectable life in Devonshire for his extended family. A favorite among Dickens' works Nicholas Nickleby has been adapted into a much-loved film. Chapman and Hall unknown books‎

‎The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First edition of one of Dickens' most popular novels. Octavo bound in full morocco by Morrell ornate inlay to the spine front and rear panels raised bands inner dentelles illustrated with 40 plates. In fine condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. An exceptional presentation. In 1867 Charles Dickens began his second American reading tour at Boston's Tremont Temple where an enthusiastic audience delighted in some of his most notable works members of the audience included legendary literary stars such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Although Dickens was in declining health he embarked on an ambitious travel schedule across the United States. Dickens returned to Boston once more before concluding his U.S. tour in New York City. When Charles Dickens arrived in Boston on November 19 1867 the celebrated English author spent several days at the Parker House hotel recuperating from the voyage. As conscientious a performer as he was a writer Dickens had prepared diligently for his performances redrafting and memorizing key passages from his books especially for these engagements. He used a book only as a prop; he was so familiar with the material that he could improvise with ease. However during his 1867-1868 tour he was plagued with Flu-like symptoms insomnia and an inflammation of his foot which forced him to walk with a cane. During his last tours in 1868 Dickens confined much of his performances to the New England area. Dickens was grateful for the income he desperately needed from his readings which generated $140000 close to $2000000 today; but he longed for home. On April 8 1868 Dickens gave the last performance of the tour. Prolonged applause followed the reading. He closed by telling the audience "In this brief life of ours it is sad to do almost anything for the last time. Ladies and gentlemen I beg most earnestly most gratefully and most affectionately to bid you each and all farewell." He died two years later having written 14 novels several of which are considered classics of English literature. Chapman and Hall hardcover books‎
