‎MR. THACKERAY MR. YATES And The GARRICK CLUB. The Correspondence and Facts‎

‎London: Printed for Private Circulation by Taylor and Greening 1859. 1st edition NCBEL III 830 & 1083. PRESENTATION copy from the author INSCRIBED at the top of the t.p. 'Edward Bradley / from the author". Late 19th C. 3/4 blue morocco binding with marbled paper boards & eps. Elaborate gilt decorated spine. TEG. Modest binding wear at extremities. Bookplate. A handsome VG copy. 15 1 blank pp. Binder's blanks at rear of volume. 8vo. 8-1/2" x 5-1/2"

The notorious quarrel between two of England's most popular authors began with Yates' critical review in Town Talk of Thackeray's English Humourists of the Eighteenth Century. Thackeray as might be expected was a bit affronted at what he viewed as a slanderous insult by this fellow member of the Garrick Club; believing much of Yates' information came from club meetings he took his grievance to the club committee. The committee sided with Thackeray and instructed Yates to apologize; Yates refused & was forcibly barred from club premises subsequently bringing charges against the club Secretary. Dickens absent from London as this brouhaha was brewing returned to find all in full force. He offered to mediate though primarily siding with Yates which Thackeray viewed as treachery. The ill feelings between the two did not abate for years until shortly before Thackeray's death in 1863. Herein Yates recounts the history & evidence of the disagreement with not unexpectedly a bias to his own case. This copy presented to Edward Bradley presumed to be the Victorian novelist who wrote under the pen name Cuthbert M. Bede. Known in Wise facsimiles cf Todd 425c the first edition as here just twice at auction in the last 30 years the last being 1977. A rare piece of Dickensiana; the first time we've ever been able to offer the item. Printed for Private Circulation [by Taylor and Greening] hardcover books‎

"Dickens and Browne are the most celebrated author-artist team in the history of English book illustration" and Copperfield was their "most popular success" Hodnett 111-12. "Charles Dickens and Hablot Knight Browne are the most celebrated author-artist team in the history of English book illustration" and Copperfield was their "most popular success" Hodnett 111-12. Cosway bindings named for renowned 19th-century English miniaturist Richard Cosway were popularized if not invented in the early 1900s by the renowned London bookselling firm of Henry Sotheran. The earliest Cosway bindings were created by Miss C.B. Currie who faithfully imitated Cosway's detailed watercolor style of portraiture from designs by J.H. Stonehouse Sotheran's manager. These delicate miniature paintings often on ivory were set into the covers or doublures of richly-tooled bindings and protected by a thin pane of glass. Bradbury and Evans unknown books‎

‎THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD. COMPLETE‎

‎1873. Brattleboro Vermont: published by Thomas. P. James 1873. Original brown cloth. First Edition of one of the earliest -- and certainly most curious -- sequels/solutions to Charles Dickens's THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD published in Vermont only three years after the mystery was left unfinished when Dickens died in June 1870. It occupies a considerable 488 pages. According to the "Medium's Preface" written by James a Vermont clairvoyant the spirit of Charles Dickens wrote this book completing the tale by communicating with James while the latter slept. Thus James himself has no recollection of having written it.; there is also an "Author's Preface" written by Dickens from beyond the grave. This is a tight near-fine copy with only quite minor wear at the extremities. Carr UTexas B291.

hardcover books‎
