‎BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE WRITINGS OF CHARLES DICKENS‎

‎Warwick & New York: J. Thomson / G.D. Steichert 1904. viii9-108pp. 12mo. Boards paper spine label. Spine label chipped spine a bit darkened and creased extremities rubbed and a bit worn pencil annotations throughout endsheets tanned. A good sound copy. First edition. A good bookselling association copy inscribed by the compiler/editor: "To Charles Sawyer Esq. with every best wish from W.T. Spencer June 1904." The verso of the first preliminary bears an advert for Spencer's bookselling firm established 1884 and it therefore seems probable that he had a hand in underwriting the publication. Spencer and Charles Sawyer were great bookselling rivals in the area of Dickens and his contemporaries though Sawyer's firm was established a decade after Spencer's. J. Thomson / G.D. ‎OLD LEAVES: GATHERED FROM HOUSEHOLD WORDS‎

‎London: Chapman & Hall 1860. Contemporary three quarter brown morocco and marbled boards a.e.g. Binding worn joints mended some restoration to spine front binder's free endsheet cracking at gutter; just a sound copy. First edition. An uncommon collection containing fifteen of Dickens' articles including some well-known pieces: "A Curious Dance Round a Curious Tree" "A Plated Article" and "Valentine's Day at the Post Office." Dickens revised the texts of these pieces for this book publication and Wills dedicated the volume to Dickens. The editor's copy with his bookplate William Henry Wills on the front paste-down and a statement written out by a later owner in ink on a prelim narrating the provenance of this volume: it stayed with Wills' widow "formerly Miss Janet Chambers" until her death in 1892 when "Mr. Wills' library was inherited by my aunt Lady Priestly and is now in the possession of her son Dr. R. Priestly and to a smaller extent in that of her second son Mr. J.G. Priestly K.G. who presented me with this volume. G.E.S. Chambers. Edinburgh. May 1911." William Henry Wills' lifelong association with Dickens began in the fall of 1845 when Wills became the novelist's personal secretary and general administrative assistant. Wills had contributed to Bentley's MISCELLANY in 1837 had been a member of the literary staff of PUNCH at its founding in 1841 and had served since 1842 as assistant editor of Chambers's JOURNAL in Edinburgh. "On John Forster's suggestion Wills was made assistant editor of 'Household Words' and was given the same position by Dickens when ten years later 'All the Year Round' was incorporated with it. His business capacity was invaluable to Dickens and he was one of the most intimate friends of the novelist in later life. At the end of 1851 Wills accompanied Dickens on his theatrical tour in connection with the Guild of Literature and Art to the temporary success of which his exertions largely contributed. In 1868 while Dickens was in America Wills suffered concussion of the brain from an accident in the hunting field and was disabled from his duties as editor of 'All the Year Round.' He never recovered and retired from active work" - DNB. ECKEL pp.187-8. GIMBEL D35. SUZANNET E50. Chapman & Hall hardcover books‎

The Personal History of David Copperfield. With Illustrations by H.K. Browne. London: Bradbury & Evans 1850.

First edition in book form first state following all but two of the twenty points listed in Smith in the primary binding. Octavo 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in; 222 x 138 mm. xiv 1 errata 1 blank 624 pp. Engraved frontispiece title page and thirty-eight engraved plates after Hablot K.Browne aka "Phiz". The two points not in their first state are p. 132 line 20 "screamed" for "screwed" and double end quotes on p. 368 line 24.

Publisher's 'variant' binding of moderate olive green fine-diaper grain cloth; the front and back covers entirely stamped in blind with a three line border which encloses a rectangular frame that occupies the length of the covers. Within the frame there is an ornament of leaves and stems in each corner and a chain like design that runs along its inner surface; each segment of the chain encloses s four-headed flower and is bordered by a nipple 30 on each cover: 10 at each side and 5 each at the top and bottom. The spine is stamped in blind with; the lettering is in gold DAVID/COPPERFIELD between the first and second panels and CHAs. DICKENS centered within the third panel from the top. The facing end-papers have a pale orange yellow coating. Bookplates of Victor B. Levit on front paste-down and free end-paper. Small booksellers label of J. Moddie Miller Edinburgh on front paste-down.

Some small and very neat repairs to spine extremities. Inner hinges expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Spine very slightly faded a few very minor and pale stains on the cloth sides corners very slightly bumped with a little show-through of the boards. A very good copy the plates remarkably clean and fresh for this book.

Following the serial publication of the novel in parts May 1849 - Nov. 1850 the novel was published in book form on November 14 1850.

"As is well known this novel being largely biographic was the first one by Dickens written in the first person. The original sales did not exceed 25000 copies its later popularity more than equalized the failure as an early money-maker. With many lovers of the author's works 'David Copperfield' ranks as the finest of his writings. With a book which gave to the world such characters as Betsy Trotwood Micawber the Pegottys and Mr. Dick to mention only a few it would have been strange if it had been otherwise. The rather meagre profits again brought to the author the necessity for a personally-owned and conducted periodical and this subsequently formulated itself into his Household Words.

Smith I:9. ‎The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby Extra Illustrated‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Browne Hablot K. 'Phiz"; Meadows Kenney. First printing mixed state octavo size 707 pp. This was writer Charles Dickens' 1812-1870 third novel widely anticipated and loved. He is often considered the greatest of the Victorian era novelists blending drama and comedy into compelling stories. In this novel Dickens explores the social issues that his works are known for such as harsh boarding schools the privilege of royal title and wealth social customs of the day and the plight of the working class. The plot focuses on the hardships courageously navigated by young Nicholas Nickleby after his father passes away.

The extra illustrations provided were drawn by Joseph Kenny Meadows 1790 - 1874 best known for his drawings published in Punch magazine. He was a friend of Charles Dickens and several other writers of the period. These caricatures add a visual element to the characters depicted by Dickens n.b. above information from Wiki.

___DESCRIPTION: Half red morocco leather over marbled paper boards six compartments on spine five with gilt title and author in gilt to one compartment embossed decorative and gilt borders to front and rear boards all edges marbled frontis of a young Charles Dickens supplied thirty-nine plates by Hablot K. ‎Dombey and Son‎

‎London: Bradbury & Evans 1848. Time Consoler of Affliction and Softener of Anger"
Scarce in the 'Primary' Cloth Binding

DICKENS Charles. Dombey and Son. London: Bradbury & Evans 1848.

First edition first issue with the 'eight-line errata' following all but a very few of the points in Smith in book form of Dickens' seventh novel bound from the original monthly parts with stab-holes present in the inner margins of gatherings. Octavo 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in; 222 x 138 mm. xvi 1 errata 1 blank 624 pp. Engraved frontispiece titlepage and thirty-eight plates after Hablot K. Browne "Phiz" including the 'dark' plate "On the Dark Road" facing p. 547.

Some of the plates with light foxing mainly marginal otherwise a very clean and partially uncut example.

Publisher's 'primary' binding of moderate olive-green fine-diaper grain cloth; the front and back covers entirely stamped in blind with a three-line border which encloses a rectangular frame that occupies the length of the covers. The frame contains an ornament of leaves and stems in each corner and a chain-like design that runs along its inner edge; each segment of the chain encloses a four-headed flower and is bordered by a nipple. The spine is lettered in gilt and stamped in blind with a thick band at its top and bottom and four rectangular panels. Original pale orange-yellow coated endpapers. With nearly all of the 'internal flaws' mentioned by Smith uncorrected. Front joint head and tail of spine and inner hinges expertly and almost invisibly repaired spine slightly faded. An excellent example far better than is usually seen of this now hard to find Dickens novel in the original cloth.

"Dombey and Son originally appeared in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts the last forming a double number from October 1846 - April 1848. It was published in book form on April 12 1848. at 21s.

Dombey and Son contains the first published example of a so-called dark plate which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast. The one dark plate in Dombey and Son is "On the Dark Road" p. 547. The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process." London: Chapman and Hall 1844.

First edition in book form first issue following all points in Smith including vignette on title-page with amount on sign post transposed to read "100£" and seven studs in the trunk. Plates facing pp. 387 and 386 transposed as per Michael Sadleir's copy at UCLA and all of the other thirty-four first issue points. According to Smith "An earlier 13-line errata leaf exists with the same data that is found on the 14-line leaf; the setting was changed to 14-lines for a better balance."

Octavo 8 11/16 x 5 7/16 inches; 220 x 139 mm. xiv errata with 14 lines verso blank 624 pp. Forty etched plates including frontispiece and title-page vignette by Hablot K. Browne aka "Phiz."

Publisher's primary binding of moderate blue diagonally-ribbed cloth. Covers stamped in blind spine stamped in blind and lettered in gilt with "London 1844" at foot. Original pale yellow coated endpapers. Armorial book-plate of "Sherwin" on front paste-down and ink signature of "J.Sherwin Sherwin" on half-title.

The text-block has been expertly re-cased using the original yellow-coated end-papers. The original cloth is near fine with no fading and just the bare minimum of strengthening at the spine ends and slight wear to the lower corners. The gilt lettering is bright and fresh. The plates have light to moderate foxing which is mainly confined to the blank margins. There is a 3/8 inch diameter stain on the margin of the plate facing page 160 and a light marginal stain on the facing leaves. Closed tear on margin of O2 pp. 195/6 corner 3/8 x 1/2 inch torn away from FF4. Light foxing to end-papers and first and last leaves only. The text block remarkably clean and fresh. Overall this is an exceptional copy of a title rarely found in better condition. Housed in an early fleece-lined green cloth clamshell case.

Martin Chuzzlewit is listed as number five in Michael Sadleir's list of Charles Dickens comparative scarcities.

The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit originally appeared in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts January 1843 - July 1844. This the first edition in book form appeared on July 16 1844 at 21s. and was the last of Dickens's picaresque novels. Dickens thought it to be his best work - but his readers disagreed. In fact Martin Chuzzlewit was the first of his novels to lose readers during serialization and the publisher Chapman and Hall suggested that Dickens's fees should be reduced. This never happened but it caused a rift that was not bridged until Chapman and Hall published A Tale of Two Cities in 1859. Dombey and Son 1848 David Copperfield 1850 Bleak House 1853 Hard Times 1854 and Little Dorrit 1857 were all published by Bradbury and Evans. London: Chapman and Hall, 1844 unknown books‎

The three-decker publication date was 9 November 1838 and within a week at Dickens's insistence the title-pages were changed to include his name and the "Church" version of the final plate "Rose Maylie and Oliver" was substituted for the "Fireside" version. ‎Oliver Twist‎

‎London: Richard Bentley 1838. Charles Dickens Unromantic Portrayal of Criminals and Their Sordid Lives

DICKENS Charles. Oliver Twist. By Charles Dickens. Author of "The Pickwick Papers" In Three Volumes. Vol. I. II. III. London: Richard Bentley 1838.

First edition of Dickens' second novel. The "Charles Dickens" issue with the title-page authorship credit to Charles Dickens instead of "Boz" and with the "Church" version of the final plate. First state of volume III with "pilaster" instead of "pier" or "pedestal" on page 164. Almost all the internal flaws according to Smith present.

Three octavo volumes 7 15/16 x 4 7/8 inches; 202 x 124 mm. Volumes I and III in twelves volume II in eights. iv 12-331 1 blank 4 advertisements; iv 12-307 1 blank; iv 12-315 1 blank pp. No half-title called for in Volume III. Twenty-four engraved plates by George Cruikshank. Small piece 3/4 x 3/8 inch torn away from upper corner of second plate in volume II repaired tear to top margin of following pages 61/62; E7.

Original Smith primary binding; Carter binding variant B reddish brown fine-diaper cloth front and back covers stamped in blind with an arabesque design spines ruled in blind and lettered in gilt original pale yellow coated endpapers. Some light foxing to plates as usual some light occasional marginal soiling. Spine ends and inner hinges of volume three expertly and almost invisibly repaired spines very slightly faded but gilt still bright. Armorial bookplate of Adrian Hoffman Joline on front paste-downs bookplate for volume two removed. Housed in a quarter brown morocco clamshell case. An excellent and very attractive set.

For this novel Dickens's first in the standard three-volume form Bentley divided the printing task between two firms: Volume I was printed in a twelvemo format by Samuel Bentley; Volume II in octavo format by Whiting; and Volume III preliminaries and signatures A-F and probably G by Whiting with the remaining text by Samuel Bentley again in twelvemo format. The three-decker publication date was 9 November 1839 and within a week at Dickens's insistence the title-pages were changed to include his name and the "Church" version of the final plate was substituted for the "Fireside" version.

Smith I 4.

Oliver Twist is the second novel by Charles Dickens and was first published as a serial 1837-39. The story is of the orphan Oliver Twist who starts his life in a workhouse and is then sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London where he meets the Artful Dodger a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal Fagin.

Oliver Twist is notable for its unromantic portrayal by Dickens of criminals and their sordid lives as well as for exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century.

"My dear child' said the old gentleman moved by the warmth of Oliver's sudden appeal 'you need not be afraid of my deserting you unless you give me cause.' I never never will sir' interposed Oliver."

In this early example of the social novel Dickens satirizes the hypocrisies of his time including child labor the recruitment of children as criminals and the presence of street children. The novel may have been inspired by the story A Memoir of of Robert Blincoe 1832 an orphan whose account of working as a child laborer in a cotton mill was widely read in the 1830s. It is likely that Dickens's own youthful experiences contributed as well.

Oliver Twist has been the subject of numerous adaptations for various media including a highly successful musical play Oliver! and the multiple Academy Award-winning 1968 motion picture which featured Mark Lester as Oliver Jack Wild as the Artful Dodger Ron Moody as Fagin and Oliver Reed as Bill Sykes.
