Master Humphrey's Clock In 88 Weekly Parts
<p>88 weekly parts with three frontispieces and numerous wood engravings in the text by George Cattermole Hablot K. Browne and others. Quarto 10 1/2" x 7" bound in publisher's 88 original pictorial weekly parts in printed white self-wrappers uncut housed green cloth slipcase and chemise. Eckel pp. 61-65; Hatton & Cleaver pp. 161-182 First edition first issue.</p><p>With preliminaries frontispiece title-page and Preface for the three volume edition present in numbers 26 52 and 88; addresses by the author in parts 9 80-83 and 87; a tipped in advertisement to pt. 62 for <em>Chambers's Journal of Literature Poetry Biography and Adventure</em>. Each weekly part was issued as a single folded sheet of 16 pages 4 of which formed the outer wrapper around 12 numbered pages of letterpress. "Of the four issues the weekly one is difficult to obtain in a clean condition and is therefore the costliest" Eckel. All 88 parts include front wrappers with an engraved design by George Cattermole which was engraved in wood by E. Landells. One of the first works to be published in both weekly and monthly parts</p><p><em>Master Humphrey's Clock</em> was a weekly periodical edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens and published from 4 April 1840 to 4 December 1841. It began with a frame story in which Master Humphrey tells about himself and his small circle of friends and their penchant for telling stories. Several short stories were included followed by the novels <em>The Old Curiosity Shop</em> and <em>Barnaby Rudge</em>. It is generally thought that Dickens originally intended <em>The Old Curiosity Shop</em> as a short story like the others that had appeared in <em>Master Humphrey's Clock</em> but after a few chapters decided to extend it into a novel. Master Humphrey appears as the first-person narrator in the first three chapters of <em>The Old Curiosity Shop</em> but then disappears stating "And now that I have carried this history so far in my own character and introduced these personages to the reader I shall for the convenience of the narrative detach myself from its further course and leave those who have prominent and necessary parts in it to speak and act for themselves."<br /><br />Master Humphrey is a lonely man who lives in London. He keeps old manuscripts in an antique longcase clock by the chimney-corner. One day he decides that he would start a little club called Master Humphrey's Clock where the members would read out their manuscripts to the others. The members include Master Humphrey; a deaf gentleman; Jack Redburn; retired merchant Owen Miles; and Mr. Pickwick from <em>The Pickwick Papers</em>. A mirror club in the kitchen <em>Mr. Weller's Watch</em> run by Mr. Weller has members including Humphrey's maid the barber and Sam Weller.<br /><br /><em>Master Humphrey's Clock</em> appeared after <em>The Old Curiosity Shop</em> to introduce Barnaby Rudge. After Barnaby Rudge Master Humphrey is left by himself by the chimney corner in a train of thoughts. Here the deaf gentleman continues the narration. Later the deaf gentleman and his friends return to Humphrey's house to find him dead. Humphrey has left money for the barber and the maid no doubt by traces of love that they would be married. Redburn and the deaf gentleman look after the house and the club closes for good.<br /><br />In the portion of<em> Master Humphrey's Clock</em> which succeeds The Old Curiosity Shop Master Humphrey reveals to his friends that he is the character referred to as the 'single gentleman' in that story.</p><p><strong>Condition: </strong></p><p>Some soiling and chipping a few soft creases some chipping and light soiling a few leaves becoming detached Slipcase with some rubbing to edges else very good in like slipcase.</p> Chapman and Hall paperback

Hatton & Cleaver pp.343-370 First edition.</p><p><em>Our Mutual Friend</em> written in 1864–1865 is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is one of his most sophisticated works combining savage satire with social analysis. It centers on in the words of critic J Hillis Miller quoting from the character Bella Wilfer in the book "money money money and what money can make of life". Most reviewers in the 1860s continued to praise Dickens' skill as a writer in general but did not review this novel in detail. Some found the plot both too complex and not well laid out. <em>The Times</em> of London found the first few chapters did not draw the reader into the characters. In the 20th century however reviewers began to find much to approve in the later novels of Dickens including <em>Our Mutual Friend. </em>In the late 20th and early 21st centuries some reviewers suggested that Dickens was in fact experimenting with structure and that the characters considered somewhat flat and not recognized by the contemporary reviewers were meant rather to be true representations of the Victorian working class and the key to understanding the structure of the society depicted by Dickens in the novel.</p><p><strong>Condition: </strong></p><p>Part 13 with light damp-staining to plates occasional spotting but generally clean internally original printed blue wrappers some occasional light repair or retouching to spines part 1 upper cover rather creased and soiled with some chipping to head an foot part 6 with hole to lower wrapper part 19/20 a little soiled with some chipping still a very good set generally preserved in two custom red calf drop-front boxes</p> Chapman and Hall paperback

<p>20 parts in 19 with 36 engraved plates after H.K. Browne "Phiz". Small octavo 7 1/2 x 5" bound in original tan printed wrappers. Gimbel A104; Smith American 7 pp 219-227; Wilkins p 25 First American edition.</p><p>he American parts issue is rare at auction with just 5 copies recorded in auction records since 1977. The discrepancy between the number of plates issued in the parts 36 with the number called for in the list of illustrations 38 plus vignette and portrait is explained by Wilkins: "At the bottom of the first page of each number was printed 'The illustrations for this number will be given with the next' the text probably being set in type as soon as the English number was received and printed at once without waiting for the engraving of the plates for that number so that the plates were always one number behind the text. The Phiz plates were redrawn and engraved on wood by J.W. Orr." Though instructions are given in the last number for obtaining the final suite of plates evidently many readers did not do so — the Self and Doheny copies all contain 36 plates.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> covers soiled and chipped part 19/20 covers detached and spine perished a few other covers loose or detached portion of part 18 upper cover excised some toning and staining to text some staining to some of the parts. Octavo 8 3/4" X 5 1/2" bound in original pictorial blue-green wrappers in a modern morocco backed box. 9 x 5 1/2 inches Wood-engraved plates after Luke Fildes engraved by Dalziel C. Roberts. Complete as issued. First edition.</p><p><em>The Mystery of Edwin Drood</em> is Charles Dickens's final unfinished novel published in 1870 which centers on the mysterious disappearance of Edwin Drood after his engagement to Rosa Bud is broken off leaving his uncle the opium-addicted choirmaster John Jasper as the prime suspect. The story set in the cathedral town of Cloisterham involves opium dens secret desires and a detective figure named Datchery but Dickens died before revealing the ending leaving the central mystery unsolved and sparking centuries of speculation.</p><p>At the death of Dickens on 9 June 1870 the novel was left unfinished in his writing desk only six of a planned twelve instalments having been written. He left no detailed plan for the remaining installments or solution to the novel's mystery and many later adaptations and continuations by other writers have attempted to complete the story.</p><p>There have been four film adaptations of <em>The Mystery of Edwin Drood</em>. The first two are silent pictures released in 1909 British directed by Arthur Gilbert and 1914 American directed by Herbert Blaché and Tom Terriss and are unavailable to the general public and have been little seen since they were released.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Some wear and soiling to wrappers with some losses occasional light spotting and dampstains to text and one front joint of the box worn else very good in like enclosure.</p> Chapman & Hall paperback
