An excellent copy overall with four additional portrait plates bound in depicting characters from the novel.<br/><br/>Dombey and Son tackles a number of key themes that appear throughout Dickens' authorial career -- concerns about family duty class position child welfare and the dangers of arranged marriages in particular. As the titular Dombey builds his shipping company he fantasizes that his son will someday take over the business and continue his legacy. But England is changing rapidly due to the effects of industrialization and its effects ripple throughout Victorian culture. One symbol of industrialization's promise and its perils is the railroad. In chapter six Dickens calls the railroad's impact a "great earthquake." First issue of text with the word "Delight" instead of "Joy" mentioned twice on page 284 with "Capatin" in the last line of page 324 part XI and the word "if" is absent in part XIV page 426 line 9 page number is present on page 431. Part XIX/XX with first issue title page showing Captain Cuttle's hook on his left arm and with the 8 line errata. Letts Son & Steer ad in part XV with 6 diary specimens. Plates are very good to fine with light edge toning to a few. Booksellers' ticket on front wrap of part X. Spines are expertly renewed on some parts. There are a couple of "firsts" in Dombey and Son: the plate "On the Dark Road" in part XVIII is the first of what became known as the "dark plates" - also this is the first appearance of the "horizontal plates" on which the subject is rotated 90 degrees. First "Cheap" Edition first issue from the first and most important collected works of Dickens with in this case a 2pp new introduction and a specially commissioned new frontispiece. Begun in 1847 with works already published Dickens added further titles as he went along. Most were published by Chapman & Hall however this particular title belonged to Bradbury & Evans yet both provided a book nearly identical in design. Despite being called "cheap" Dickens made sure that these volumes were just as high quality in texture and ornamentation as his first editions; there are 17 volumes in total all are rarely seen in fine condition. A FINE copy quite rare in this splendid condition spine a trifle browned as almost always with this olive-green cloth trifling wear to the extremities armorial bookplate of Henry Smith and blind-stamp of W. Dombey and Son "was well received by its readers and is considered to be the first novel that reflects Dickens's artistic maturity. Dickens told his first biographer 'It was to do with Pride what its predecessor Martin Chuzzlewit has done with Selfishness" Schlicke 280. The work "has a sense of the numinous is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things than any of Dickens' previous novels. It is larger in conception so that human life is seen in terms of its beginning and its end so that grief and forgiveness become more powerful forces within it. Dickens is aware of its status as art and provides here a simulacrum of human life touched by majesty and purpose" Ackroyd 526. This set agrees with H&C's description except that in part 11 there is no ad for Letts & Son and the ad for Kaye's Pills in part 12 varies slightly from the one they described. Two of the three misprints noted by H&C are present: part 11 page 324 "Capitan" for "Captain"; part 14 page 426 "if" is not present; on page 431 the page number is present in H&C's earliest issue the number is omitted. Plates foxed - as seems inevitable - some minor paper repairs to the corners of a few spines; a few wrappers slightly soiled and smudged; overall in very nice condition as issued enclosed in a chemise and cloth slipcase. 20 parts in 19 as issued 8vo original pictorial blue wrappers. 40 plates. A fine set of Dombey and Son in original parts completely unsophisticated as evidenced by the ink signature on each front wrapper of a contemporary reader Stephen Blair. Engraved ticket to Charles Dickens's farewell dinner
London 1867. Admission ticket #70 for the public banquet given in honor of Charles Dickens as he embarked on his final American reading tour. In 1867 Dickens was at the height of his literary fame and the grand farewell dinner at London's Freemason's Hall was attended by almost five hundred guests including Matthew Arnold Wilkie Collins Alfred Tennyson and Anthony Trollope. In his response to the toasts Dickens outlined his reasons for returning to America: " I am inspired . . . by a natural desire to see for myself the astonishing change and progress of a quarter of a century over there to grasp the hands of many faithful friends whom I left upon those shores to see the faces of a multitude of new friends upon whom I have never looked and last not least to use my best endeavor to lay down a third cable of intercommunication and alliance between the old world and the new." Dickens was overwhelmed by the occasion writing to his friend Harry Wills the following day: "When I got up to speak but for taking a desperate hold of myself I should have lost my sight and voice and sat down again." A near-fine artifact of the Victorian literary scene. 1861. Works of Charles Dickens. Household Edition. In Two Volumes. Illustrated from Drawings by F.O.C. Darley and John Gilbert. New York: James G. Gregory 1861. Original dark green cloth. Very early American Edition -- the first to deposit copies at the Library of Congress -- of one of Dickens's most-loved novels being volumes of the "Household Edition". There has been much controversy over which is the first American edition -- this edition by Gregory or Peterson's edition. This Gregory edition was long regarded as the first American edition but Walter Smith's 2012 bibliography of Dickens's American editions gives the nod to Peterson's with considerable information on this controversy. In the meantime here is the brief known history. On November 15 1860 Harper entered a copyright for the book and then serialized the tale in Harper's Weekly beginning on November 24 and ending on August 3 1861 however there is no book edition published by Harper in 1861 as they sold the book rights to Peterson. On August 26 barely three weeks later and about seven weeks after the English three-decker was published James Gregory of New York entered a two volume set for copyright having undoubtedly set the type from the Harper serialization. Peterson of Philadelphia did not enter his one-volume edition at the LofC until November 8th almost three months later. But according to Smith Peterson's edition was actually out in the public's hand by the month of July while Gregory's did not actually hit the streets until September. So although Gregory's was the first edition to deposit copies at the Library of Congress Peterson's was the first "published" -- put into the hands of the public. The earliest Gregory volumes as here bear only his name as publisher on the title pages; on later copies this was replaced by the imprint of Sheldon and Company. Each volume includes a frontispiece plate by F.O.C. Darley with protective tissue the UK edition was not illustrated. These volumes are bright and in close-to-fine condition scarcely any of the usual mottling and bubbling of the cloth frequently a problem with these Household Edition volumes and virtually no wear. This copy has the majority of the first issue points with only a few of the corrections that were made after the first issue. Overall a clean and attractive set extremely rare in the unsophisticated publisher's cloth. The first issue of the first edition book published on July 6 1861 was followed by four subsequent issues of the same edition published on August 5 August 17 September 21 and October 30 of the same year. Smith notes that "These first five issues were probably printed at a single impression and published with altered title pages to imply and encourage a rapid sale In all five issues the same misprints persist." The first issue which included a print run of 1000 copies was "almost entirely taken up by the libraries" leaving only a few hundred copies for private ownership. 1861. in original cloth Second Edition. London: Chapman and Hall 1861. Original wavy-grain blind-stamped violet cloth with gilt-decorated spines. "Second Edition" so-called on the three title pages technically the second of the five slightly-differing 1861 impressions of the first edition. GREAT EXPECTATIONS was one of the few Dickens novels that did not first appear in monthly serial parts; instead it appeared in 36 weekly numbers of Dickens's periodical All The Year Round. Also GREAT EXPECTATIONS was one of only two Dickens novels not to be illustrated as a first edition the other being HARD TIMES. The five "editions" of this three-decker all have title pages dated 1861; the first with no mention of an "Edition" on the title pages was in the public's hands by July 6th; this "Second" was published on August 5th followed by the "Third" on August 17th the "Fourth" on September 21st and the "Fifth" on October 30th. Although Walter Smith in 1982 stated "these first five issues were probably printed at a single impression and published with altered title pages to imply and encourage a rapid sale" it has since been shown the 1993 Clarendon Edition analysis by Margaret Cardwell that there are subtle differences among the five issues many of them instances of type slippage. There are only four issue points that involve actual re-setting of the type as opposed to type deterioration see Clarendon p. 493 -- in this "Second Edition" they read "in" on Vol I page 259 line 7 "gto et" on Vol II page 205 line 20 "there's" on Vol III page 173 line 26 and "himself very carefully" on Vol III page 192 lines 11-12. This set is still in the original publisher's wavy-grain violet cloth blind-stamped on the covers and decorated in gilt on the spines; GREAT EXPECTATIONS was published without half-titles and in this set none of the three volumes has an ad catalogue. Condition is good-to-very good: the volumes are unnecessarily re-backed with just a bit of darker cloth peeking through where there is minor wear at some spine ends and with un-original but quite early light-yellow endpapers applied over the original paste-downs; also the top edge is gilded. The Vol III spine gilt is a little brighter than that on Vol II which in turn is not as rubbed as Vol I. An old engraved portrait of Dickens is applied to the Vol I rear paste-down. The actual first issue of GREAT EXPECTATIONS without an "Edition" cited on the title pages is the Holy Grail for Dickens collectors since it is virtually impossible to find in fine condition in original cloth most copies having gone directly from the publisher to Mudie's Select Library where they were rented out fortnightly. The first issue fine in original cloth now brings more than $100000 when such a copy surfaces seldom; even rebound it is a major investment. Thus these subsequent "editions" in the same binding and bearing the same date as the first are greatly sought-after for the majority of us seeking the primary format without such a cost.
