The HAUNTED MAN And The GHOST'S BARGAIN. A Fancy for Christmas-Time
London: Bradbury & Evans 1848. Cloth. VG- with the lightest of wear to the cover tips. Wear tpo extreme top of spine cloth. Light soiling and age-toning here and there. The ffep appears to have possibly been removed as advertising leaf is the first sheet when the book is opened but the joint where the front pastedown ends and the edge extends as the inner hinge and then onto the advertising sheet is mysteriously straight and glued with no cut marks or indentations onto the advertising sheet leading one to suppose there never was a ffep in this copy. 1' crack to the top area of the inner hinge. Red gilt-embossed cloth with ornate design on cover center and also along the spine. All edges gilt. 8 188 pp. Advertising leaf printed on both sides precedes engraved frontispiece and additional title on toned grounds by Martin & Corbould after John Tenniel wood-engraved illustrations by Martin & Corbould Thomas Williams Smith & Cheltnam and Dalziel by the following Artists: Tenniel 5 Leech 5 Stone 3 & Stanfield 3 Measures 6.75" high and 4.5" wide. The gilt on this copy is bright both on the cover and the spine. The ffep issue is vexing. Sold with all faults if any exist. A very nbice copy overall with nice shelf appeal. This is the fifth and last of Dickens's illustrated Christmas books. In this copy the first page numeral on p. 166 is damaged. This though priority is uncertain is the only identifiable issue point of this book. Smith II pp 66-70. Bradbury & Evans hardcover
