<p><strong>Finely illustrated edition of '<em>The Cricket on the Hearth</em>' 1845 in Russian. </strong>One of 4 000 copies published.</p><p>Cover vignettes and five full-page woodcuts were created by graphic artist <strong>Aleksey Kravchenko</strong> 1889–1940 renowned as a master of woodcut. He studied at Simon Hollosy's art school in Munich and at the Moscow School of Painting Sculpture and Architecture under Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov.<br />Russian artists first illustrated Dickens' works at the end of the 19th century. In the 1920s a new generation of Russian graphic artists known for their avant-garde approach revisited Dickens and prepared illustrated editions of '<em>Great Expectations</em>' Mitrokhin and Budogoskii 1929 and 1935 '<em>Hard Times</em>' Favorsky 1933 and '<em>The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club</em>' Milashevskii 1933. Aleksey Kravchenko was among the pioneers of this movement.<br />The translator's name is not specified in the book; however the translation by Maria Shishmareva 1852–1939 is published here from the 7th volume of '<em>The Works of Charles Dickens</em>' 1894.</p><p>We couldn't trace any copy via OCLC.</p><p><em><strong>Please be advised that certain books in our collection may require an export permit for international shipping. Philadelphia: T.B. Peterson & Brothers post-1865. post-1865. Good. - Octavo 9-7/8 inches high by 6-1/4 inches wide. Crudely bound into a stiff brown folder with white linen tape lacking the original wrappers. The head and tail of the stiff folder's spine and bottom corner of the front cover are chipped. The folder's spine is splitting. 176 deckle-edged pages in all printed in 2 columns consisting of 1 leaf and pages 19-192. There are a couple of small tears along the stitching at the inner edge of the title page. There is minor dampstaining to the top inner corner of the first few pages and the last page is slightly soiled. Good. <p>Although no date is listed the inclusion of Dickens' story "Our Mutual Friend" in the list of titles he authored would indicate this work was published after 1865.<p>Charles Dickens edited this autobiographical work on the 18th Century English performer who according to The Guardian "invented the figure of the classic clown we know today". Dickens contributed a 4-page introductory chapter. The Italian immigrant Grimaldi was the first to use white-faced makeup and performed in outrageous colored clothes. He was a friend of Lord Byron and Edmund Kean. Beneath the mask Grimaldi's life was filled with tragedy. London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. 1848. Good. FIRST EDITION WITH ALL BUT ONE OF THE FIRST ISSUE POINTS - Octavo 8-1/4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Three-quarter tan calf & marbled boards with gilt elaborate decorations in gilt and raised bands on the spine as well as a gilt titled red leather label. The covers are rubbed and slightly scuffed with minor wear to the edges and corners. All edges are marbled. xvi ii & 624 pages plus an errata slip illustrated with 40 plates by Hablot K. Browne "Phiz" including a frontispiece and an additional pictorial title page. A couple of signatures i.e. group of pages are lightly pulled. There is scattered foxing particularly in the margins of the plates. Good. <p>"First edition with all but one of the first issue points. The first issue points present in this copy of the book are as follows: a The errata leaf following page xvi has 2 lines; an inserted errata slip has 12 lins. b The title vignette and the illustration following page 238 erroneously have Capt. Cuttle's hook on his left arm; c On the "List of Plates" on page xv the frontis and the title vignette have no page entry; d Further on page xv line 2 there are no quotation marks around the words "the party"; e Ten lines up from the bottom on page 14 there is no apostrophe in the word "aint"; f On page 26 line 11 the word "fidgety" is mis-spelled "fidgetty"; g On page 40 lines 16-17 the words "shewed' and "shew" are printed for "showed" and "show"; h On page 284 five and six lines up from the bottom the word "Delight" replaces the word "Joy"; i On page 324 in the last line the word "Captain" is mis-spelled "Capatin"; j On page 426 line 9 the word "if" is not present; k On page 582 the last line lacks a period. The only later issue point we have been able to determine is that the page number "431" is present on that page.<p>The "dark plate" by Phiz "On the Dark Road" is in superb condition with minor foxing in the margins. "According to Valerie Lester Browne this was Phiz's first attempt at a classic 'dark plate' in this case to show the futility of the villainous Carker's trying to cheat death as he makes his way through France to Paris and thence to England. If he cannot escape Dombey on the Continent where he fears Dombey can easily hire assassins he rationalizes that it would be better to confront Dombey in a country less lawless. The March 1848 illustration moreover engages the viewer with the sharpness and vivacity of the figures and the prancing horses horses having been from his earliest compositions one of Phiz's strengths." - quoted from The Victorian Web. The covers are rubbed and bumped. The spine is darkened with wear to its head and tail. iv 572 & 36 pages. The hinge is cracked opposite the table of contents and the textblock is broken in half at page 257. The volume is shaken and one page is loose. Fair. <p>Chapters 1 and 3 of "The Perils of Certain English Prisoners and their Treasure in Women Children Silver and Jewels" which makes up the Christmas 1857 issue are by Dickens. These chapters are entitled "The Island of Silver-Store" and "The Rafts on the River". The second chapter "The Prison in the Woods" is by Wilkie Collins. Collins also contributed "Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices" which is serialized in 5 issues of the volume. New York: Leavitt & Allen, (1857). hardcover
