PLATES DESIGNED AND ETCHED BY GEORGE CRUIKSHANK - Rare set of Separately issued Plates for Oliver Twist
London: Richard Bentley 1838. Unrecorded perhaps unique surviving set of Cruikshank's illustrations to Oliver Twist issued by the book's publisher as a loose possibly promotional set simultaneous with first publication. $1750 20 plates 150x243mm are loosely contained in a bifolium printed wrapper which has separated along the spine. This bears a modified version of the title page of the book's first edition in its first state. Dickens' authorship is referred to as 'Boz' but in place of the book's 'Three Volumes' designation we are offered: 'Plates Designed and Etched by George Cruikshank.' 20 plates are present all browned and spotted with a little scuffing to edges and corners. The wrappers do not state the number of plates to be issued in this sequence so it's not possible to tell whether the 20 present here are complete in themselves. By comparison with the 24 plates which appear in the first edition of the book this sequence which begins with the iconic image: 'Oliver asks for more' has 4 fewer than the printed book lacking the plates dated to August 1837 Oliver Recovering and Mr Claypole March 1838 as well as the last two plates: Fagin in the Condemned Cell and Rose Maylie and Oliver - the cancelled Fireside plate. The paper-size of these images is significantly larger than that of the first edition closer to that issued in the first serial publication Bentley's Miscellany making this collection a fascinating hybrid of first serial and first book publication. Oliver Twist was Dickens' second novel after Pickwick Papers and uses the orphan's compelling story as a vehicle for social commentary. A very good copy the binding square and tight. The contents with spotting to the plates heavier to some two plates with minor tears neatly repaired with tissue verso and a stain to the bottom margin of one plate are otherwise in good order. The first edition in book form of Dickens's third novel originally issued in parts between 1838 and 1839 smartly bound for Sotheran's of London during the early twentieth century. Nicely bound in contemporary half purple-brown morocco over purple-brown pebble-grained cloth boards the spine with six raised bands ruled in gilt and with titles in gilt. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and title page and 38 further plates by Halbot Knight Browne aka 'Phiz'. Extra-illustrated with 12 additional plates by Browne depicting the principal characters of the novel 52 engraved plates in total. Two-line errata page bound in after the list of plates. Lacks half-title. A good copy the binding square and firm with some marking to the boards and bumping to the corners. The contents with spotting to the plates as commonly encountered two plates with a small nick to the edge with neat old paper repairs to the verso a 2.5cm hole to the bottom of one plate between pp.564-5 with loss to the caption 2cm clipped from the head of the printed title page apparently to remove a previous owner's signature and with subsequent owner's name in ink a small chip to the blank bottom-left corner of p.xv a 3cm tear to p.219 a paper-repaired tear to p.495/6 a few small nicks to some pages at the gutter from the binding process and the odd mark to the text pages more so to p.213 are otherwise in good order. The first edition in book form of Dicken's 'Dombey and Son' the novel being originally issued in monthly parts between 1846 and 1848.</p><p>An attractive extra-illustrated copy.
