Octavo two volumes: pp. i-v vi vii viii 1 2-384 1 2-96; i-vi 1 2-350 twenty-eight inserted plates by various artists plus three inserted plates by John Leech in the new series tan polished calf spine panels elaborately tooled in gold leather title and volume number labels front and rear panels ruled in gold inner dentelles a.e.g. blue coated endpapers. First edition in book form first issue with title page of volume one dated 1836. The LIBRARY OF FICTION OR FAMILY STORY-TELLER edited by Charles Whitehead ran to fourteen numbers issued monthly April 1836 -- May 1837. A new series continued for two issues June and July 1837 as THE FAMILY MAGAZINE AND LIBRARY OF FICTION the two issues of the new series are here bound at the end of volume one. Includes the first publication of "The Tuggs's at Ramsgate" and "A Little Talk About Spring and the Sweeps" two sketches by Charles Dickens writing as "Boz" collected later in SKETCHES BY BOZ. Other contributors to the LIBRARY OF FICTION include Miss Mitford G. P. R. James and Douglas Jerrold. Tales of the supernatural include "Sandie Sandeman the Piper" by Edward Mayhew "The Spirit of the Fountain" by J. S. Coyne and "The German Student" here anonymously presented. "The Dragoman of the Ravens" published anonymously in the last issue of the new series is supernatural as well. The book was reprinted as THE LIBRARY OF THE NEWEST ENGLISH NOVELS TALES AND POEMS two volumes Leipzig: Julius Wunder 1837. Bleiler The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1017 citing the 1837 Leipzig edition. Block The English Novel 1740-1850 p. 139. Not in Sadleir or Wolff. Eckel pp. 150-1. Podeschi E121 and E122. Both half titles are present. A beautiful set in a handsome binding by Riviere & Son.
