Great Expectations
Chapman and Hall London 1861 First Edition First Printing fifth issue. Three volumes including the publisher's catalog dated August 1861 at the rear of Volume III. Bound in the ORIGINAL publisher's ribbed purple cloth binding with ruling and decorations in blind to boards lettering and decorations in gilt to spine. Each volume with bright boards toning to the spines wear to the extremities some light rubbing across. Volume I with spine cracked at front hinge former owner's signature to the dedication page. Volumes II and III each starting at front hinges former owner's signature to the title pages. Each volume with otherwise intact spines and extremely bright and clean interiors. This copy has the majority of the first issue points with only a few of the corrections that were made after the first issue. Overall a clean and attractive set extremely rare in the unsophisticated publisher's cloth. Smith I 14. Great Expectations was originally published serially in All the Year Round the author's literary magazine in thirty-six weekly issues from December 1860-August 1861. It is one of Dickens' two novels that was not illustrated in the first book edition the other being Hard Times. The first issue of the first edition published on July 6 1861 was followed by four subsequent issues of the same edition published on August 5 August 17 September 21 and October 30 of the same year. Smith notes that "These first five issues were probably printed at a single impression and published with altered title pages to imply and encourage a rapid sale In all five issues the same misprints persist." Thus the first five issues are essentially the same first edition with varying title pages printed simultaneously and issued in successive intervals. While some of the first issue's misprints were fixed the corrections were not all-encompassing yielding a variety of misprints and corrections in the first issues. For example this volume contains some of the later issue corrections but includes an earlier catalog that was also published in earlier issues. The first issue which included a print run of 1000 copies was "almost entirely taken up by the libraries" leaving only a few hundred copies for private ownership and increasing the rarity of a privately-owned later issue of the first printing. Great Expectations is Dickens' thirteenth novel. Like his 1850 novel David Copperfield it is a bildungsroman that follows the protagonist's life from childhood to adulthood and is written entirely in the first-person. Great Expectations tells the story of a young orphan boy named Pip and his "great expectations" of becoming a gentleman and receiving his benefactor's wealth and property. A classic Victorian novel Great Expectations features many of Dickens' recurring themes including orphans prison life and Victorian society. Overall a solid unrestored uniform set all original and not made up or supplied from other copies. An affordable copy in collector's condition. We buy Dickens First Editions!!!. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Chapman and Hall, London hardcover

First edition complete in the original twenty installments issued in nineteen monthly parts with 19 and 20 bound together. Publisher's green printed wrappers publisher's ads bound in to front of each text block with additional ads inserted to rear two black and white plates corresponding to each part bound in preceding first page of each text block with p. 13 of the ads in Part 10 misprinted as "31" noted as uncommon by Hatton & Cleaver. A very good set complete with 40 black and white plates in total a few with tissue guards still intact; lacking a few of the ads first three ads to rear of Part 3 one ad to rear of Part 5 one inserted slip to rear of Part 8 final ad in Part 17; Parts 19 and 20 bound in a wrapper with the incorrect price of 1s. the first 18 parts were published with a price of 1s. and the 19th was published with a price of 2s. and with the "19." and "5" in the first line of front wrapper handwritten in ink lacking the publisher's ads but with ads usually following text inserted at front; all parts with wrappers variously worn chipping to extremities pages generally clean with some scattered spots and wear to edges Part 3 split into two pieces at spine. Overall a presentable copy of this classic work in its most original form. Hatton & Cleaver pp. 345-370. Originally published serially in the 20 installments and later in book form Our Mutual Friend is the last novel Dickens completed in his lifetime leaving his final novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood 1870 incomplete. Our Mutual Friend remains popular among readers because of its compelling plot line which examines the advantages and disadvantages of individual wealth. The story begins with John Harmon the estranged son of a wealthy miser who has inherited his father's money and as a condition of his inheritance arranged to marry Bella Wilfer. Instead of greeting his fortune Harmon fakes his own death and watches from disguise as his father's wealth brings fortune and misfortune to various members of the community before revealing his true identity. In this classic novel Dickens revisits many of the themes from his earlier works including the corruptive power of money and the virtues of the hardworking poor. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Stone Marcus. London: Chapman and Hall, May 1864 - November 1865 paperback

Sketches by Boz
London: Chapman and Hall 1839 New edition. Illustrated with 40 engraved plates by George Cruikshank. Finely bound in contemporary three-quarter dark green calf marbled boards and page edges spine titled and elaborately stamped in gilt. Very good with wear and rubbing to spine ends edges and boards frontispiece with repaired tear some foxing to frontis and plates. Overall a very attractive bright and very clean copy. This collection of fiction first published as a series of short pieces in The Monthly Magazine and other periodicals was re-issued in book form in 1836 and stands as Dickens's first foray into authorship. The pieces were penned under Dickens's pseudonym "Boz" and offer insight into his observations of the streets of Victorian London and its inhabitants. The humorous and unforgiving social critique includes chapters such as "Thoughts about People" a grim take on the life of a working man in London as one that "cannot be said to be forgotten when he dies for no one remembered him when he was alive" and "The Broker's Man" a long lament by a character called Mr. Bung on the trials he faces working for a broker. The original two-volume set and its later-published third volume were illustrated by notable political cartoonist and illustrator of the time George Cruikshank who worked closely with Dickens to portray each character and scene exactly as he envisioned them. Sketches marked the beginning of many of Dickens's professional relationships which ultimately led to his rise to the prominence he holds today. Hard Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Cruikshank George. DICKENS Charles; CRUIKSHANK George illustrator
Oliver Twist
London: Richard Bentley 1838. Charles Dickens Unromantic Portrayal of Criminals and Their Sordid Lives DICKENS Charles. Oliver Twist. By Charles Dickens. Author of "The Pickwick Papers" In Three Volumes. Vol. I. II. III. London: Richard Bentley 1838. First edition of Dickens' second novel. The "Charles Dickens" issue with the title-page authorship credit to Charles Dickens instead of "Boz" and with the "Church" version of the final plate. First state of volume III with "pilaster" instead of "pier" or "pedestal" on page 164. Almost all the internal flaws according to Smith present. Three octavo volumes 7 15/16 x 4 7/8 inches; 202 x 124 mm. Volumes I and III in twelves volume II in eights. iv 12-331 1 blank 4 advertisements; iv 12-307 1 blank; iv 12-315 1 blank pp. No half-title called for in Volume III. Twenty-four engraved plates by George Cruikshank. Small piece 3/4 x 3/8 inch torn away from upper corner of second plate in volume II repaired tear to top margin of following pages 61/62; E7. Original Smith primary binding; Carter binding variant B reddish brown fine-diaper cloth front and back covers stamped in blind with an arabesque design spines ruled in blind and lettered in gilt original pale yellow coated endpapers. Some light foxing to plates as usual some light occasional marginal soiling. Spine ends and inner hinges of volume three expertly and almost invisibly repaired spines very slightly faded but gilt still bright. Armorial bookplate of Adrian Hoffman Joline on front paste-downs bookplate for volume two removed. Housed in a quarter brown morocco clamshell case. An excellent and very attractive set. For this novel Dickens's first in the standard three-volume form Bentley divided the printing task between two firms: Volume I was printed in a twelvemo format by Samuel Bentley; Volume II in octavo format by Whiting; and Volume III preliminaries and signatures A-F and probably G by Whiting with the remaining text by Samuel Bentley again in twelvemo format. The three-decker publication date was 9 November 1839 and within a week at Dickens's insistence the title-pages were changed to include his name and the "Church" version of the final plate was substituted for the "Fireside" version. Smith I 4. Oliver Twist is the second novel by Charles Dickens and was first published as a serial 1837-39. The story is of the orphan Oliver Twist who starts his life in a workhouse and is then sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London where he meets the Artful Dodger a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal Fagin. Oliver Twist is notable for its unromantic portrayal by Dickens of criminals and their sordid lives as well as for exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century. "My dear child' said the old gentleman moved by the warmth of Oliver's sudden appeal 'you need not be afraid of my deserting you unless you give me cause.' I never never will sir' interposed Oliver." In this early example of the social novel Dickens satirizes the hypocrisies of his time including child labor the recruitment of children as criminals and the presence of street children. The novel may have been inspired by the story A Memoir of of Robert Blincoe 1832 an orphan whose account of working as a child laborer in a cotton mill was widely read in the 1830s. It is likely that Dickens's own youthful experiences contributed as well. Oliver Twist has been the subject of numerous adaptations for various media including a highly successful musical play Oliver! and the multiple Academy Award-winning 1968 motion picture which featured Mark Lester as Oliver Jack Wild as the Artful Dodger Ron Moody as Fagin and Oliver Reed as Bill Sykes.

London: Richard Bentley, 1838 hardcover

Dickens Charles Ed.
Household Words SIGNED
London: Bradbury & Evans 1850. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Inscribed/ Signed by VIP othe. 1st Edition. Household Words was published every Wednesday from March 1850 to May 1859. Each number cost a mere tuppence thereby ensuring a wide readership. Here are the first 9 volumes of 20 containing issues 1-229 with many literary and sociological tales of mid-Victorian life in Engloand. Theoretically according to Wikipedia the paper championed the cause of the poor and working classes but in fact addressed itself almost exclusively to the middle class. Only the name of Dickens the journal's "conductor" appeared. Articles were unsigned although authors of serialized novels were identified and in spite of its regularly featuring an "advertiser" went unillustrated. In order to boost slumping sales Dickens serialized his own novel Hard Times every week between April 1 and August 12 1854 contained here. It had the desired effect more than doubling the journal's circulation and encouraging the author who remarked that he was "Three parts mad and the fourth delirious with perpetual rushing at Hard Times". That Dickens owned half of the company and his agents John Forster and William Henry Wills owned a further quarter of it was insurance that the author would have a free hand in the paper. Wills was also appointed associate editor and in December 1849 Dickens' acquaintance writer and poet Richard Henry Horne was appointed sub-editor at a salary of 'five guineas a week'. In 1859 however owing to a dispute between Dickens and the publishers Bradbury and Evans it was replaced by All the Year Round in which he had greater control. The journal contained a mixture of fiction and nonfiction. A large amount of the non-fiction dealt with the social issues of the time. Also found here for the first time are Mrs Gaskell's Cranford and Dicken's own Child's History of England. All volumes are 1/2 leather with marblised paper covers signed in pencil by James D. Smillie on several tps who edited and published an American version of this weekly paper. Seven volumes in excellent condition two with chips and bits missing from top of spines. Weight and shipping may be a consideration. Bradbury & Evans Hardcover
