DICKENS Charles and Wilkie Collins
THE PERILS OF CERTAIN ENGLISH PRISONERS and their Treasure in Women Children Silver and Jewels
London: Chapman and Hall. Leather Bound. pp. 154.12mo First published in 1857 as the extra Christmas number of 'Household Words' this copy appears to be an early English edition in book form the precise publication date of which it is difficult to ascertain. It was certainly preceded by the abbreviated American edition published in 1857 by John Jansen New York City and most likely preceded by the Bradbury and Evans quarto publication in 1857 in London. COPAC reports a Chapman and Hall copy with similar attributes to ours to which they attribute a publication date of 1874. However as Chapman and Hall had been Dicken's publisher and he returned to them in 1858 and as both Dickens and Collins were at the height of their fame it would not be the least bit surprising for that publisher to re-issue these stories in book form as quickly as possible. Given the style of binding and the type font used it is our opinion that this copy was published between 1858 and 1874. The book consists of three short stories; two by Dickens - 'The Island of Silver-Store' and 'The Rafts on the River' and the other by Collins - 'The Prison in the Woods'. The coloured frontispiece is by Audley Gunston. It is bound in full dark blue morocco leather with the title stamped in gilt to the front board and spine. The top edge is gilt the endpapers are marbled and there is an extra coloured title page and a somewhat tattered ribbon marker. The boards are lightly scuffed rubbed at the edges and a bit pulled at the spine ends. There is a small spine slant. The contents are clean and tight. Overall in good to good plus condition. A scarce title.

Chapman and Hall hardcover

DICKENS Charles
ALL THE YEAR ROUND. A Weekly Journal / New Series One lot of ten volumes bound two to a book for the years 1873 to 1877
London: The Author & Chapman & Hall 1873 to 1877. 1st edition. Hardcover. Royal 8voNicely bound in contemporary 3/4 leather over 'pebbled' cloth'All the Year Round' was a British weekly literary magazine founded owned and edited by Charles Dickens and after the author's death in June 1870 owned and edited by his son Charles Dickens Jr. It continued publishing until 1895. Many famous novels were serialized in its pages including Dicken's 'A Tale of Two Cities' and 'Great Expectations' and 'The Woman in White' and 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins. Our offering is one lot of ten volumes five books of 'The New Series' of this periodical commencing with volume IX from November 16 1872 to April 26 1873 No. 207 to 230 and concluding with volume XVIII from March 3 1877 to August 4 1877 no. 431 to 453 and the 'Extra Summer Number' of July 2 1877; a total of five uniformly bound volumes. Each of the books shows some wear scuffing and light soiling to the leather and cloth. However the hinges and joints are tight and the contents are generally quite clean and unmarked throughout. The cloth on the rear board of the volume for 1877 is partially peeled away from the board. It also appears that some paper stuck to the top left joint of the rear board of the 1874 volume. This has not affected the integrity of the joint and is a minor cosmetic blemish. The other volumes are free of such defects. Overall a good sturdy set sold as one lot. Due to the size and weight of this collection it might be wise to enquire first as to costs and options to ship.

The Author & Chapman & Hall hardcover

The Story of OLIVER TWIST
Over-sized vintage edition of "The Story of OLIVER TWIST" by Charles Dickens. 1935; Whitman Publishing Company; Racine WI. The book features 178 illustrations by Morton Cowen."

From the Introduction:
"As presented here Dickens original 'Oliver Twist' one of the great English classics has been faithfully followed in all essentials. The story is presented in a new form carried on by a series of vivid pictures accompanied by a single paragraph of reading under each one. Graphic and concentrated the adventures of Oliver Twist are clear easy to follow and swiftly moving. The excessive sentimentality and social criticism which belonged to Dickens own day but which seems rather out of place in ours have been judiciously omitted. What is left as a moment's glance will show is the kernel of Dickens' masterpiece."

Condition:
Nice covers with only a few very light small stains; bumped corners; tiny cloth tear at top-left corner of spine. Tight binding. No cracks. No loose pages. The pages are in excellent condition - clean with no writing stains foxing or tears found. Some very light tanning to end papers. Household Words - A Weekly Journal by Charles Dickens 1850-1859 19 Volumes Complete
This is a complete 19 Volume set of "HOUSEHOLD WORDS" - A Weekly Journal by Charles Dickens. The volumes span the years 1850 Volume I to 1859 Volume XIX. The significance of this set is that Volume IX contains the 1st appearance of the Dickens classic "HARD TIMES" please see photos. "Hard Times was first published serially in "Household Words" in the April 1 1854 issue volume IX followed shortly thereafter by the 1st edition in book form in the same year. Seldom found complete in 19 Volumes.

"Household Words" was an English weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens and was published every Saturday from March 1850 to May 1859. This set contains 19 hardcover volumes which contain the complete run of individual issues. To boost slumping sales Dickens serialized his classic novel "Hard Times" in weekly parts between April 1st and August 12th 1854. It had the desired effect more than doubling the journal's circulation and encouraging Dickens who remarked that he was "three parts mad and the fourth delirious with perpetual rushing at Hard Times."

Condition:
Overall the set is in terrific condition with only light wear as would be expected. The most notable condition flaw with this set is that the front cover of Volume III is present but detached; also there is a 1" area on the spine of volumes III and XVI where the leather has flaked off please see photo #1.otherwise the set is in great condition with only expected wear. The pages are in overall excellent condition with only occasional foxing. Some volumes have a name written in pen on the front end paper. The volumes are tightly bound. Partial crack at front hinge of Volume XI.no other cracks found. The set has a light musty odor. Overall a great condition complete set T.L. McElrath & Co. hardcover
