This copy has a two plates in different places than the order listed in Smith it does not contain the list of illustrations at the end of the Contents leaf most copies do have it all of the plates have Vol. III p - " in the captions and it does not have the blind-stamped binder's name on front cover. The book was first published 17 December 1836. In the ads at rear is advertized " A novel by 'Boz.' GABRIEL VARDON. By Charles Dickens" which was published as BARNABY RUDGE. Margins of covers faded to tan as often; postage stamp-size area of back cover is lighter pink; yellowing to page edges; frontispiece and vignette title have foxing and darkening less pronounced but present on the other plates; scattered light soiling and tan spots in text offsetting to pages adjacent to the plates; two damp spots at lower margin of front endpapers and damp stain to lower inch of rear endpapers; pencil ownership signature twice; in all a VG unworn copy of Charles Dickens' second book one of his scarcest in original cloth much scarcer than the 1836 two volume First Series. Old re binding of half leather and marbled boards marbled endpapers and page edges spine with four raised bands gilt decorations title in gilt. The plates have darkening and some foxing; a bit of spine scuffing with the spine gilt dulled; split to fro nt joint and cracked inner hinges neatly repaired internally with cloth tape and covers are firmly attached; lower inner corner of leaf listing the plates torn away but no printing lost; a VG copy generally. Bound from the parts issue. Of note in th e history of book illustration is the first published example of the then-new "dark plate" process in the plate at page 547. Eight line errata leaf pp xvii-xviii. 12 line errata slip tipped in after title leaf. Frontispiece eng raved title and 38 other plates inserted complete by Hablot K. Brown "Phiz". No tissue guards. Some old cloth repairs to spine tips resewn new endpapers now tanned. Cloth split to front joint but joint firm; some wear to lower edges of cov ers and to outer corners. Yellowing and occasional foxing to text with occasional tan spots to text margins; plates darkened and foxed at edges; frontispiece and illustrated title foxed; spine and margins of covers darkened to brown; else a VG copy tight in the binding. This copy was not bound from the parts no stab holes to inner margins. It has 27 of the 39 main errors listed in Smith but "Captain" p. 324 last word is correctly spelled and "if" is present on p. 426 line 9. The bindi ng varies from the two described by Smith. It closely resembles Smith's "binding variant" but it has no gilt date at foot of spine and "Charles Dickens" is spelled out in full on the spine. Of note in the history of book illustration is the first p ublished example of the "dark plate" process at p. 547. Smith I.8; Podeschi A103; Eckel pp 74-76. First Edition. Hardcover.
