Octavo 8 3/16 x 5 3/16 inches; 207 x 132 mm. x 1-254 pp. Sixteen inserted plates including frontispiece and engraved vignette title by Browne 'Phiz'. Without the publisher's catalog bound at the end. Half green morocco over green linen cloth boards bound by Bayntun. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Spine sunned to brown. Some occasional minor spots. Some light offsetting from plates. Plate facing page 150 with a closed one-inch tear. Overall a very good copy. A Tale of Two Cities was first serialized in Dickensís periodical All the Year Round from April 30-November 26 1859. Its appearance in monthly parts July-December 1859 and book form mark Dickensís return to his old publishers Chapman and Hall after a long stay with Bradbury and Evans. The extremely large audience for the novel in All the Year Round however left less than the usual demand for the parts issue and at first for the book both of which are now quite rare. This title also marks the authorís final collaboration with Phiz Dickensís most evocative and most sympathetic illustrator. Hatton and Cleaver 33lff. Smith I 13. With Forty Illustrations Engraved on Wood by J. W. Orr From Designs by H. K. Browne. In Two Volumes. New York: John Wiley 1850. First American edition in book form the Wiley and Putnam edition. Although the title-pages list Wiley as the publisher Smith considers this the "Wiley and Putman" edition as Putnam took over the publications of the original parts part-way through publication. Two twelvemo volumes 7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; 185 x 122 mm. iii-x 2 480 2 blank; 2blank iii-viii 2 454 pp. With half-title for volume II but lacking half-title for volume I which is often the case as per Smith "Some copies in the original cloth may be missing the half-title in Vol. I and the blank leaf p. i-ii in Vol II." Present copies includes the blank leaf in volume II. With 39 out of 40 engraved plates including the frontispiece and engraved title-page in volume I. Bound without the plate that should be facing page 105 in volume I entitled "Steerforth and Mr. Mell." According to Smith it is common for this edition to have missing plates. "Some copies may have missing illustrations. For example the copy at University of Texas at Austin lacks 'I Make the Acquaintance of Miss Mowcher' and 'Martha."" In volume II the plate that would be facing page 14 is bound as the frontispiece in volume II. Bound in publisher's original purple cloth. Boards and spine stamped in blind. Spines lettered and ruled in gilt. Original yellow coated endpapers with publisher's advertisements dated Nov. 1st 1850. Bindings slightly skewed. Minor chipping to bottom of the spine of volume I. Some foxing to text pages throughout. All plates are toned as usual for American paper. Overall a very nice copy. According to Smith "Unsold and some unbound sheets of the first impression were bound by Wiley into two volumes in several cloth bindings and published on November 22 1850." Although Lea and Blanchard also published a two volume set the same year they only used eight plates rather than the original 40 as Wiley did. The Lea and Blanchard copy was a "cheap edition" and most likely pirated. Based on the advertisements in The Literary World on November 23 1850 the two volume set by Lea and Blanchard was "Published on this Day." "Wiley and Putnam also published the edition in twenty numbers in two parts or volumes. The first volume appeared on April 18 in cloth gilt with all the illustrations. Collates nearly complete with almost all ads and slips as called for by Hatton and Cleaver with the rare fold-out ìLettsî ad in part VIII lacks slip after plates in part IX rear slip in part XII rear slip in part XIII front slip in part XVI lacks last page of last ads in part XIX-XX. This copy has seven specimen diary leaves in part VIII variant ads in parts XII 2A and XVIII Waterlow alternate on yellow paper. As in the Martin set the ìAdvertiserî Part VIII correctly reads ìLife of Goldsmithî instead of ìLile.î Original blue printed wrappers. All parts expertly rebacked. A few tiny frayed spots on corners. Some scattered foxing to text and plates. A small stain on front wrapper of Part III. Part VII opened a bit wide after plates but holding firm. Part X pages 5-6 of back advertisement torn with loss of half the page. Part XII pages 3-6 of back advertisement torn with loss of text from the ad. Part XV with text pages 471-474 bound in backwards but present. Part XVI with a tear to page 7 of the slip following the plates affecting text of the ad. Plates a bit tones mainly to the four in Part XIX-XX. Overall an attractive set. Housed in a quarter blue morocco slip case. Copperfield is one of the rarer titles in parts.
