Pleasing early 20th century full polished calf by Morrell for John Wanamaker stamp-signed in ink on front free endpaper raised bands spine gilt in compartments red and green morocco labels all edges gilt. Original cloth back and covers bound in at end. With hand-colored color frontispiece engraved title and two plates and several black and white vignettes by Nicolson. A touch of rubbing to edges and tops of joints a few very mild indentations on covers light offsetting from illustrations and a couple of minor marginal blemishes but still an excellent copy with only very trivial wear. This amusing work is a direct imitation of Dickens' enormously successful Christmas Books mimicking their appearance as well as their format and themes. Pardon 1824-84 was a journalist and editor who often wrote under the pseudonym "Rawdon Crawley;" according to the DNB in addition to writing for numerous publications and the occasional book of fiction as found here he also penned several works on billiards and other "Games for Gentlemen. Spines evenly sunned to tan as usual with green morocco faint offsetting from final plate otherwise A VERY FINE COPY with only the most trivial imperfections internally and in a sparkling binding. This is an extraordinarily attractive copy of the biography of Joseph Grimaldi 1779-1837 called by Britannica "the most celebrated of English clowns" and generally considered without equal as a clown of pantomime. There has been much debate about the exact nature of Dickens' role in the writing of this book. Forster said that Dickens wrote only the introductory chapter; others have said that he edited the manuscript with the help of his father; and Bentley has stated in print that Dickens wrote a significant portion of the work. Eckel says "It is plain that the last chapter is in Dickens' style and that other parts of the book are his. Grimaldi laid the foundation for his memoirs but in a rough and diffuse manner. He gave the manuscript to Thomas Egerton Wilks who after some condensing sold the manuscript to Bentley who in turn passed it to Dickens for the purpose of embroidery." According to Kitton copies with the frame around the final plate as here are more valuable than others because of their relative scarcity; the border was added without Dickens' consent and when he expressed his displeasure it was quickly removed. ALL BUT ONE OF THE VOLUMES UNOPENED. Illustrated throughout. Spines slightly affected by light each spine evenly so but with differing resultant shades a little wear to extremities bottom corner of one leaf torn off with loss of a couple of letters another leaf with small hole and the same degree of loss other trivial imperfections but an excellent set of a readable edition from a major publisher with sturdy bindings that show almost no wear to the joints and an essentially unread text that obviously shows almost no signs of use. This is a pleasing unread set of the ever-popular works of Charles John Huffam Dickens 1812-70 a writer whose creations are familiar to millions either directly or through one of the multitude of movies and television shows based on his fiction. As DNB observes Dickens had an "extraordinary ability to create and give unforgettably expressive names to figures who are highly individualized by their physical appearance dress and mannerisms and who are also powerfully allegorical being brilliant incarnations of various aspects of perennial human nature." Dickens was admired by his contemporaries as a masterful story teller and despite the disdain of early 20th century critics he remains popular today both in academic circles and with the reading public. VERY ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY CADET BLUE THREE-QUARTER MOROCCO over pale blue watered silk raised bands spines handsomely gilt in compartments with floral sprig centerpiece and volute cornerpieces marbled endpapers top edges gilt. With 10 engraved portraits. Top inch of silk on one board faded by sun one plate with closed one-inch fore-edge tear not affecting image other minor internal imperfections but A VERY PRETTY SET especially fresh and clean inside and out and with bindings that are remarkably bright. Poet Richard Hengist Horne 1802-84 patterned this collection of critical essays about contemporary writers after the acclaimed collection of essays "Spirit of the Age; or Contemporary Portraits" published by his idol William Hazlitt in 1825. Among the writers included in the work were Dickens the Brownings Mrs. Browning is given credit for contributing at least one of the chapters Mrs. Shelley Wordsworth Mrs. Trollope Tennyson and Hunt there are 25 essays in all in the work some of them dealing with more than one figure. Few were pleased by what they read; according to DNB the book "elicited a deluge of abuse from its victims and Horne na�vely surprised decamped hastily on a tour of Germany." Dickens however was either more forgiving or more flattered and subsequently employed Horne as a reporter for the "Daily News" for which he covered the Irish famine in 1846 and later as a sub-editor of "Household Words."
