Dickens 7 Subat 1812 yilinda Portsea yakinlarindaki Landport sehrinde dünyada gelmistir. Memur bir babanin oglu olarak sekiz çocuklu ailenin ikinci çocugu olan Dickens'in çocukluk yillari sefalet ve yoksulluk içinde geçmistir. Babasinin borçlanip hapse girisiyle küçük yastaki Dickens'i ve ailesini zor durumda birakir. Böylece yazarin bu sikintili dönemi asabilmek için okul yerine ise gönderilmesi gerekir. Charles'in okula baslayacagini umut ederken ayakkabi boyasi fabrikasina Warren's Blacking Factory baslamasi ise yazarin çocukluk yillarini utanç verici olarak hatirlamasina neden olur. Yazarin aci dolu bu yillarinin izlerini ""David Copperfield"" 1850 ve ""Great Expectations"" Büyük Umutlar/1861 adli eserlerinde görmek mümkündür. Babasinin hapisten çikmasindan sonra bile çalistirilmaktan kurtulamayan Dickens'in ailenin sorumluluklarini küçük yasta üzerine almasi 15 yasindan sonra da devam eder. Bu seferki isi ise bir avukatin yaninda kâtiplik yapmak olur. Bu isin tek iyi yani Dickens'a bos zaman taniyarak tiyatroya gitmesine imkân saglamasidir. Böylece tiyatroda küçük roller almaya baslar. Ayni zamanda stenografi de ögrenen Dickens 1835 yilinda ""Morning Chronicle"" gazetesine stenograf olarak ise alinir. Bu gazetedeki ilk isi ise ""Sketches by Boz"" Boz'un Karalamalari/1836 basligi altinda yazilar çikarmak olur. Ardindan ""Pickwick Papers"" Bay Pickwick'in Serüvenleri/1837 serisini yayinlayan Dickens artik dünyaca taninan popüler kimlik tasiyan bir yazara dönüsmüstür. Yazarin bugün ""Noel Baba"" olarak adlandirilmasini 1843 yilinda yayinladigi ünlü ""A Christmas Carol"" Bir Noel Ezgisi adli kitabina dayanir. Bu kitap yazarin yilbasi ve Noel'in önemini vurguladigi ve bu görüsünün toplum tarafindan benimsenmesini saglayan en önemli eserleri arasinda yer alir. Herdem Kitap paperback
