GREAT EXPECTATIONS
1861. Works of Charles Dickens. Household Edition. In Two Volumes. Illustrated from Drawings by F.O.C. Darley and John Gilbert. New York: James G. Gregory 1861. Original dark green cloth. Very early American Edition -- the first to deposit copies at the Library of Congress -- of one of Dickens's most-loved novels being volumes of the "Household Edition". There has been much controversy over which is the first American edition -- this edition by Gregory or Peterson's edition. This Gregory edition was long regarded as the first American edition but Walter Smith's 2012 bibliography of Dickens's American editions gives the nod to Peterson's with considerable information on this controversy. In the meantime here is the brief known history. On November 15 1860 Harper entered a copyright for the book and then serialized the tale in Harper's Weekly beginning on November 24 and ending on August 3 1861 however there is no book edition published by Harper in 1861 as they sold the book rights to Peterson. On August 26 barely three weeks later and about seven weeks after the English three-decker was published James Gregory of New York entered a two volume set for copyright having undoubtedly set the type from the Harper serialization. Peterson of Philadelphia did not enter his one-volume edition at the LofC until November 8th almost three months later. But according to Smith Peterson's edition was actually out in the public's hand by the month of July while Gregory's did not actually hit the streets until September. So although Gregory's was the first edition to deposit copies at the Library of Congress Peterson's was the first "published" -- put into the hands of the public. The earliest Gregory volumes as here bear only his name as publisher on the title pages; on later copies this was replaced by the imprint of Sheldon and Company. Each volume includes a frontispiece plate by F.O.C. Darley with protective tissue the UK edition was not illustrated. These volumes are bright and in close-to-fine condition scarcely any of the usual mottling and bubbling of the cloth frequently a problem with these Household Edition volumes and virtually no wear. First "Cheap" Edition actually volume 7 of the first and most important collected works of Dickens with a new 2pp introduction and a specially commissioned new frontispiece. Begun in 1847 with writings already published Dickens added further titles to his "works" as he went along. Despite being called "cheap" -- these volumes are just as high quality in texture and ornamentation as his first editions; there are 18 titles in total we've never seen a complete set in fine original condition and individual volumes in collector's condition are scarce. NEAR FINE spine a trifle browned as almost always with this olive-green cloth minor wear to the extremities bright gilt and excellent eye appeal. It would hard to find a better example of this traditionally yet inexplicably undervalued volume from Dickens's carefully-designed newly prefaced and illustrated first collection of his works. . First Edition of one of the earliest -- and certainly most curious -- sequels/solutions to Charles Dickens's THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD published in Vermont only three years after the mystery was left unfinished when Dickens died in June 1870. It occupies a considerable 488 pages. According to the "Medium's Preface" written by James a Vermont clairvoyant the spirit of Charles Dickens wrote this book completing the tale by communicating with James while the latter slept. Thus James himself has no recollection of having written it.; there is also an "Author's Preface" written by Dickens from beyond the grave. THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD
1870. New York: Harper & Brothers 1870. 2 pp preliminary ads plus 44 pp terminal ads dated Oct 1870. Original yellow-brown pictorial wrappers. Early second American edition published in late September about three weeks after Fields Osgood's edition -- and about three months after Dickens's death in June left this tale unfinished. The front cover illustration the same as appeared on the six UK parts was the work of Charles A. Collins -- Dickens's son-in-law and Wilkie's brother; the scenes shown formed the basis for the numerous attempts after Dickens's death to complete or "solve" the mystery. Harper had been serializing DROOD in parts as a monthly Dickens supplement to their Harper's Weekly but Fields Osgood had earlier paid Dickens an advance for book publication. The Harper serialization -- as well as the fact that this Harper edition came out only in wrappers -- probably explains why Harper's edition is so scarce today: many of their readers had already read the tale serially. This copy does bear the earliest and usual date October 1870 on both the ads and rear cover and the preliminary list of titles properly ends with No. 349. This copy does NOT have the Dickens portrait leaf which Smith notes is true with some copies. Copies without that leaf may be a later state but possibly copies WITH it may be a later state; a third possibility is that some initial buyers removed that leaf for framing in honor of the author who had just died. Condition is very good with very little of the wrapper lacking but with a couple of dampstains affecting the front cover and first leaves. This Harper edition is MUCH scarcer than the Fields Osgood edition for the reasons cited above; this is the first time in 40 years that we have offered it in original wrappers. Oldach and Company in the early 1900's a successful bindery in Philadelphia that bound editions of Whitman and other notable authors in 19th Century. Exquisite full crushed dark blue morocco with bold gilt design and patterning on both covers and spine five raised bands gilt panels. Especially of note are the wonderful full morocco doublures much more elaborately tooled and than the covers and each with a central inlaid maroon morocco face large groupings of vine and blossoms including a central tree design and the front doublure with gilt Presentation: "George N. Dalton 28 Cockspur St. Charing Cross. This poem was a personal favorite of Cruikshank's and he was known to utilize a costume from table-covers table-napkins and antimacassars – or anything else he could lay his hands on to deliver his rousing rendition of Lord Bateman the tune of which appears notated just before the first page of text. The authorship of this poetry by Dickens was confirmed by a letter 3 July 1839 in which Dickens expresses his desire "to remain unknown … for weighty reasons" <i>The Letters of Charles Dickens</i>Vol. I Oxford Clarendon House and Storey eds.:1969. 1841. A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty. With Illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot K. Browne. Complete in One Volume. London: Chapman and Hall 1841. Original blind-stamped olive green cloth. First Separate Edition. After NICHOLAS NICKLEBY was published in monthly serial parts with separate plates in 1838-1839 Dickens decided that his future novels would be published in weekly serial parts that included the illustrations within the text -- loosely connected under the title of MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK. He began this project in April 1840 with his tale THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP; after forty-plus parts he completed that tale and swung into the beginning of BARNABY RUDGE. In November 1841 after a total of 88 weekly parts BARNABY RUDGE was complete. During this serialization MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK containing both novels was also published in three volumes one at a time; after serialization in December 1841 each novel was also published separately in one volume as with BARNABY RUDGE here. This is why the pagination of BARNABY RUDGE is odd -- with the text running from page 229 to page 306 second half of Vol II of MH'sC then from page 1 to page 420 Vol III. At the conclusion of BARNABY RUDGE Dickens abandoned this weekly method of plate-less serialization and reverted to his prior method with MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT. This copy is in the binding variant noted by Smith of olive green fine-diaper cloth blind-stamped with a chain-like design running around the border's inner surface as was later used on DOMBEY AND SON. The original endpapers are peach-coated -- one of several colors to be found without known priority. The volume is in very good condition with a bit of wear at the extremities of the spine and along the lower edges. The delicate original endpapers are only slightly cracked. The original 1857 printing was the last major Dickens title to be published by Bradbury & Evans and their imprint still appears on the verso of the printed title and at the base of the last page of text in this copy. Ink name on free endsheet spine a bit sunned and rubbed a few trivial nicks at crown of spine but a very good copy internally fresh and clean. First edition with the eight-line errata but with the later form of the vignette title with the imprint of Chapman & Hall representing sheets passed from Bradbury & Evans to Chapman & Hall ca. 1861. The substantial majority of the textual errors far exceeding those mentioned in the errata are uncorrected. This work includes the first example of the "dark plate" process facing page 547. SMITH 8. Denoted "A New Edition Revised and Corrected" thus based on the text of 1846. The clipping is Cruikshank's own Dec. 1871 letter to the TIMES "The Origin of 'Oliver Twist.'"
