The first edition second impression of Charles Dickens' popular novel about the eponymous Martin Chuzzlewit illustrated with all thirty-eight plate present. The first edition of this work being the first edition in book form. Second issue with '£100' to the engraved title rather than '100£' which was present in the first issue. Issue points as stated by John C. Eckel in his 1913 publication 'The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens'. Half-title discarded. Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved title page and thirty-eight plates. Collated half-title isn't present but otherwise work is complete. "Martin Chuzzlewit" is about the eponymous Martin who goes against his grandfather"s wishes and falls in love with an orphaned girl intending to marry her. As a result Martin is disinherited. Charles Dickens has become one of the most famous authors of all time with his Victorian novels being read world-wide by people of all ages. He begun life working as a journalist before starting the serial publication of 'The Pickwick Papers' which earned him instant success. Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne most often known by his pen name 'Phiz'. As Phiz he illustrated many of Dickens' novels including 'David Copperfield' 'Dombey and Son' and 'Bleak House' as well as illustrating for 'Punch' throughout his life. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper 'Fred. R. Johnstone July 15th 1844'. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart. A small amount of rubbing to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light surface cracks to the spine. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. The London Gazette of 1935 lists Squance as a Lieutenant-Commander to Commander in the Royal Navy. Herbert Salisbury Squance was the son of British pathologist antiquarian and naturalist Thomas Coke Squance. Herbert edited a selection of his father's writings. Complete in three volumes. The Third volume of this work was published two years after the first two. A very smart set of the correspondence of this important Victorian literary figure. In uniform half morocco bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally smart with heavy rubbing to the joints. Very minor shelfwear to the extremities and light scattered spots to the cloth covered boards. Split to the rear joint of volume III. Bookplate to the front pastedown Herbert S Squance. An attractive rebound copy of this fascinating Lombard Street Edition copy of Dickens's 'Pickwick Papers' copiously illustrated throughout and in a signed Bayntun half crushed morocco binding. With an introduction by John Harrison Stonehouse. The 'Lombard Street Edition' is a reprint of the original edition of the 'Pickwick Papers' in facsimile including plates that have been reproduced from 'the rare first states'. This edition was originally issued in twenty 'fortnightly parts' bound in individual illustrative bluish-green paper wrappers. These original bindings have been preserved in this rebound copy and have been bound to the rear of both volumes. Each 'part' also contains 'The Pickwick Advertiser' containing 'modern' advertisements contemporary to this edition inserted in the same style as the original advertisements in the first edition of Dickens's work. This copy also contains a 'Charles Dickens bookplate' enclosed in an envelope and inserted between page 496 and 497 volume I. Collated complete with forty-three illustrations by R. Seymour R. W. Buss and Phiz and facsimiles of the original manuscript. The facsimile of 'The First Announcement of Pickwick' and of 'Dickens's Letter on the Origin of Pickwick' have been rebound facing page vii volume I. This is a grangerised copy with twenty eight additional plates to volume I four of which are in colour and twenty nine additional plates to volume II. Rebound in a signed Bayntun half crushed morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally excellent with minor shelfwear to extremities. Slight rubbing to joints and fading to spine. Head of joints to volume I partially split with leather partially lifting. Slight offsetting to extremities of endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean throughout with only the very occasional small spot to the odd page. Small tidemark to lower fore edge of plates facing page xii and 362 volume I and plates facing page 56 280 124 344 and 454 volume II not affecting images. Master Humphrey's Clock was originally issued serially in 88 weekly numbers and in 20 monthly parts from April 4 1840-November 27 1841. Following this the work was also published in this three volume edition. In the original publisher's cloth which is rather worn. Needing a rebind but would make an attractive copy once done. With a frontispiece to each volume and numerous vignettes throughout from designs by George Cattermole and Phiz. With the pale yellow endpapers to first volume and spanish marbled endpapers to volumes II and III as observed by Smith 44-57. Collated complete. This work contains Dickens' novels of The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Master Humphrey's Clock contained many short stories and it was believed that Dickens intended The Old Curiosity Shop to be a short story as well. However after a few chapters he made the decision to extend it into a novel. Later editions of The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge were published as separate novels forgetting the miscellany of Master Humphrey's Clock. Charles Dickens created some of the world's best known fictional characters. He is widely regarded to be the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. In original publisher's cloth bindings. Externally worn. Heavy rubbing to the spines and extremities. Volumes I and III are lacking backstrips with a lot of loss to the lifting backstrip of volume II. Both boards to volume III are detached but present with final leaf attached to rear board and detached from textblock. Bumping to the extremities. Front hinge to volume I is strained. Rear inge to volume I is tender. Marks to boards. Prior owners' inscriptions to the front pastedown and to the recto of front endpaper. Internally volumes are generally firmly bound with some straining in places. Final gathering of volume III is loosening and may detach with further handling. A Harlequin set but importantly this is the first edition bound from the parts of Master Humphrey's Clock by Charles Dickens. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards with gilt lettering. In Three Volumes with Volume I and II bound together. Needing a rebind ideally and priced to alow for a good quality one. With numerous illustrations throughout the text by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. Master Humphrey's Clock was a weekly periodical edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens and published from 1840 to 1841. It begins with a frame story in which Master Humphrey tells about himself and his small circle of friends and their penchant for telling stories. Several short stories are included followed by the novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge that were later published as separate works. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards with gilt lettering. There is mild wear to the extremities including mild rubbing and edge wear. The hinges of volume 1 are slightly strained and the front joint is starting. The bindings are generally tight and firm. Page 305 of volume 1 is partially detached. Internally the pages have slight browning and intermittent scattered foxing. There is a nameplate on the front pastedown of volume 1 and ink signatures on the front blank in each volume. Eckel in his 1913 publication 'The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens'.Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved title page and thirty-eight plates. Collated all plates are present including the dark plates.Bound without half-title.Frontispiece and engraved title page are bound to Volume II.'Little Dorrit' follows Amy Dorrit who was born and raised in the Marshalsea debtors prison. It was originally published in monthly instalments over nineteen months and this is the first edition published in a complete book.Charles Dickens is possibly the most well-known Victorian author with his fifteen novels still being widely read and performed as well as being studied in school and enjoyed by people of all ages.Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne most often known by his penname 'Phiz'. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally with some rubbing to the boards and spine. Crack to the head and tail of the front joint. A little bumping to the extremities. Spine is a little faded. Rubbing to the extremities resulting in a little paper lifting. Hinges are starting but firm. Internally firmly bound.
