Spine lightly sunned and a little foxed; boards bumped at corners and upper board damp-stained to lower third. Endpapers lightly foxed otherwise contents clean with no annotation or inscriptions. A very good copy overall. Part of the sought-after Nonesuch Dickens which brought the deluxe standard of the private publication to an edition printed on a trade press rather than by hand allowing for a larger print run and a wider audience. The text in this volume is taken from the 1868-70 "Charles Dickens Edition" which the Author himself revised and corrected and the illustrations are those designed for the first publication. No inscriptions. Clean text. FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY IMPORTANT WORK BY DICKENS. This is quite a desirable copy of the Dickens novel that introduced the world to the memorable Mr. Dombey and his transactions business and personal and that creates a "clear picture of society in Dickens’ time.†Dickens wrote it while in residence in a number of different areas beginning the work in Lausanne Switzerland continuing in Paris and finishing in Brighton Broadstairs and London making the text “a true cosmopolite in the manner of its writing.†The publication of this book marked a turning point for Dickens; his proceeds were a fine increase over MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT and with these earnings “his financial worriment ceased prosperity began and a period of money-saving was at hand.â€<br> This is the first publication of the text in its entirety after its serialization from October 1846 to April 1848. Little Dorrit was originally published in serial form between 1855 and 1857 The story features Amy Dorrit youngest child of her family born and raised in the Marshalsea prison for debtors in London Arthur Clennam encounters her after returning home from a 20-year absence ready to begin his life anew<br /> It satirizes shortcomings of both government and society including the institution of debtors' prisons where debtors were imprisoned unable to work and yet incarcerated until they had repaid their debts The prison in this case is the Marshalsea where Dickens's own father had been imprisoned He is also critical of the impotent bureaucracy of the British government in the form of the fictional "Circumlocution Office" Dickens also satirizes the stratification of society that results from the British class system. <br /> <br /> This copy has all the points of the first issue of the first edition i.e.<br /> 3‑line errata on p. xiv<br /> "William" for "Frederick" p. 317 l. 27<br /> Signature "B2" instead of "BB2" p. 371<br /> "Rigaud" for "Blandois" pp. 469-473<br /> Lacking errata on p. 467<br /> <br /> It is good attractively bound in 1/2 leather on marbled paper-cover boards with matching marbled endpapers. The front board is detached but the binding otherwise is still sound. Minor scuffing primarily at the edges and corners. The 40 plates by H.K. Browne shown moderate foxing.
