‎Charles Dickens' Works One‑Shilling Illustrated Parts Edition 11 Vols‎

‎London: Chapman & Hall Limited 1890. One‑Shilling Illustrated Parts Edition. Sotcover. Good to Very Good. Chapman & Hall published several reprint series of Dickens' works during the late 1800's ranging from one penny editions to deluxe bound volumes. This one shilling series was a mid-market edition. generally providing at least one complete work in each number along with smaller works to keep the page count more or less consistent. The standard bibliographies do not typically include the series. Many of the issues were bound by owners into hardcover bindings and so very few numbers with the original paper wrappers have survived.
This group includes numbers 1 16 18 19 26 28 30 32 33 34 and 35. It is not certain exactly how many numbers were eventually published but it is likely more than 50. The issues range from good to very good. All are in their original paper wrappers. There is light soiling and moderate wear on most and the paper on the spine of number 18 is partially peeling. But all are intact.
Copies in the original wrappers are scarce and it is doubly uncommon to find such a large group together. CH25. Chapman & Hall, Limited unknown‎

‎Our Mutual Friend 1st 2 vols. in 1‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1865. First. Hardcover. Very Good. Marcus Stone. Our Mutual Friend is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is one of his most sophisticated works combining savage satire with social analysis. It centers on in the words of critic J. Hillis Miller quoting the book's character Bella Wilfer "money money money and what money can make of life.

This copy combines the original two volumes into one albeit without the original publisher's ads in the rear. It contains 40 full page plates. Attractively bound in half leather on marbled boards and gilt titles and designs on the spine. The binding is sound. Minor wear and scuffing primarily at the edges and corners. Slight scattered foxing primarily on the plates which is typical for books of this vintage. Age darkening on the page edges. The personal bookplate of Thomas Richard Bate is affixed to the front pastedown.
Overall a nice copy.

. GZ18. Chapman and Hall hardcover‎

‎Little Dorrit 1st edition 1st issue‎

‎London: Bradbury and Evans 1857. First. Very Good. H.K. Browne 'Phiz". Little Dorrit was originally published in serial form between 1855 and 1857 The story features Amy Dorrit youngest child of her family born and raised in the Marshalsea prison for debtors in London Arthur Clennam encounters her after returning home from a 20-year absence ready to begin his life anew

It satirizes shortcomings of both government and society including the institution of debtors' prisons where debtors were imprisoned unable to work and yet incarcerated until they had repaid their debts The prison in this case is the Marshalsea where Dickens's own father had been imprisoned He is also critical of the impotent bureaucracy of the British government in the form of the fictional "Circumlocution Office" Dickens also satirizes the stratification of society that results from the British class system.

This copy has all the points of the first issue of the first edition i.e.
3‑line errata on p. xiv
"William" for "Frederick" p. 317 l. 27
Signature "B2" instead of "BB2" p. 371
"Rigaud" for "Blandois" pp. 469-473
Lacking errata on p. 467

It is very good attractively bound in 1/2 leather on marbled paper-cover boards with matching marbled endpapers. Hinges are cracked but the binding overall is still sound. Minor scuffing primarily at the edges and corners. The 40 plates by H.K. Browne shown slight foxing but also "edge migration" from the binder's tinting of the page edges. BK20. Bradbury and Evans unknown‎

‎THE HOUSEHOLD NARRATIVE OF CURRENT EVENTS 1850‐1855‎

‎London: Uncredited publisher 1855. First - Bound from parts. Near Fine. ″The Household Narrative of Current Events was a twopenny monthly retrospect of national international news and other information published from April 1850 to December 1855 including numbers for January ‐ March 1850 … It aimed to extend the scope of the main journal in new directions making the suite of publications a complete cheap and widely available compendium to the life of the times
An advertisement for the Narrative called it 'a complete and carefully‐digested ANNUAL REGISTER′ indicating Dickens′s hope that in its bound volume form it would emulate Burke and Dodsley′s famous Annual Register … of History Politicks and Literature which he himself found so useful as a reference work for his journalism and historical fiction Dickens′s front‐page announcement of the new venture reminded readers of 'the intimate connexion between the facts and realities of the time and the means by which we aim in Household Words to soften what is hard in them to exalt what is held in little consideration and to show the latent hope there is in what may seem unpromising′ The Narrative would thereby be another means 'to bear the world′s rough cast events to the anvil of courageous duty and there beat them into shape′ If the Victorian reporter is often figured as Asmodeus the strange compound metaphor here casts the Victorian editor as Vulcan
The Narrative′s nine subdivisional headings ‐ 'Parliament and Politics′ 'Law and Crime′ 'Accident and Disaster′ 'Social Sanitary and Municipal Progress′ 'Obituaries Colonies and Dependencies′ 'Foreign Events′ 'Commercial Record′ 'Stocks and Shares′ and 'Emigration Figures′ ‐ clearly signalled a continuation of the special interest shown by Household Words in all these topics presented in a more regimented heavily factual and statistical format To the extent that it provided the kind of corroborative detail and data on which the parent magazine based its arguments and reform campaigns the Narrative acted as a guarantor of the integrity of opinion in Household Words″ Courtesy Dickens Journals Online

This set contains the entire publication run from January 1850 to December 1855

The books are one of several of our Dickens-related listings all originally from a private estate library All are uniformly bound in fancy three‐quarter crimson leather with deep red marbled paper for endpapers and over the balance of the boards Gilt all around The materials used for the bindings date the binding to around 1890 and the bookplate of Julius Franke 1868‐1936 is present on the front pastedown Franke was a prominent New York City architect whose work included designing the Wurlitzer Building and it seems likely that he commissioned the bindings
This volumes shows only slight shelfwear The bindings and text block are sound The pages are age toned but clean The ink name "Baker" is at the top of a flyleaf in each volume but there are no other marks or damage.
