‎London: Chapman & Hall Limited 1890. One‑Shilling Illustrated Parts Edition. Sotcover. Good to Very Good. Chapman & Hall published several reprint series of Dickens' works during the late 1800's ranging from one penny editions to deluxe bound volumes. This one shilling series was a mid-market edition. generally providing at least one complete work in each number along with smaller works to keep the page count more or less consistent. The standard bibliographies do not typically include the series. Many of the issues were bound by owners into hardcover bindings and so very few numbers with the original paper wrappers have survived.<br /> This group includes numbers 1 16 18 19 26 28 30 32 33 34 and 35. It is not certain exactly how many numbers were eventually published but it is likely more than 50. The issues range from good to very good. All are in their original paper wrappers. There is light soiling and moderate wear on most and the paper on the spine of number 18 is partially peeling. But all are intact.<br /> Copies in the original wrappers are scarce and it is doubly uncommon to find such a large group together. CH25. Chapman & Hall, Limited unknown‎

Little Dorrit was originally published in serial form between 1855 and 1857 The story features Amy Dorrit youngest child of her family born and raised in the Marshalsea prison for debtors in London Arthur Clennam encounters her after returning home from a 20-year absence ready to begin his life anew<br /> <br /> It satirizes shortcomings of both government and society including the institution of debtors' prisons where debtors were imprisoned unable to work and yet incarcerated until they had repaid their debts The prison in this case is the Marshalsea where Dickens's own father had been imprisoned He is also critical of the impotent bureaucracy of the British government in the form of the fictional "Circumlocution Office" Dickens also satirizes the stratification of society that results from the British class system. <br /> <br /> This copy has all the points of the first issue of the first edition i.e.<br /> 3‑line errata on p. xiv<br /> "William" for "Frederick" p. 317 l. 27<br /> Signature "B2" instead of "BB2" p. 371<br /> "Rigaud" for "Blandois" pp. 469-473<br /> Lacking errata on p. 467<br /> <br /> It is very good attractively bound in 1/2 leather on marbled paper-cover boards with matching marbled endpapers. First published by Associated Newspapers Ltd. in London in 1934 with a foreword by Lady Dickens frontispiece portrait of Dickens facsimile manuscript page and additional illustrations. Written by Dickens between 1846 and 1849 for the private instruction of his children the manuscript remained unpublished during his lifetime. It was released only after the death of his son Sir Henry Fielding Dickens in 1933 when the family authorized publication. The Pic‐Nic Papers is composed of miscellaneous pieces by various authors It was originated by Dickens to benefit the widow and children of 28‐year‐old publisher John Macrone who died suddenly in 1837 Dickens had begun soliciting submissions in 1838 and he eventually contributed the ″Introduction″ and one short story ″The Lamplighter′s Story″ Other contributors included William Harrison Ainsworth Thomas Moore Leitch Ritchie and Agnes Strickland Macrone′s widow eventually received 450 pounds from this charitable publication<br /> <br /> This set contains the entire publication It is the corrected second state of the first edition with "young publisher" on p iii of Vol I Eckel p 145<br /> It is one of several of our Dickens-related listings all originally from a private estate library All are uniformly bound in fancy three‐quarter crimson leather with deep red marbled paper for endpapers and over the balance of the boards Gilt all around The materials used for the bindings date the binding to around 1890 and the bookplate of Julius Franke 1868‐1936 is present on the front pastedown Franke was a prominent New York City architect whose work included designing the Wurlitzer Building and it seems likely that he commissioned the bindings<br /> <br /> <br /> This volumes shows only slight shelfwear The bindings and text block are sound The frontispieces and color plates at the end of Vol III are age darkened but otherwise undamaged The text is age toned but unmarked and quite clean There is a small ink stamped index number at the top ot each title page but no other marks at all<br /> 323 298 378 6 color plates pp. Henry Colburn unknown‎
