Vol. 1 entitled The Old Curiosity Shop in stamped brown cloth with lightly marbled endpapers and all edges. Archival linen tape steadying the hinges. A well preserved copy with a few instances of foxing; overall the text is clean and the binding solid. Vol. 2 entitled Barnaby Rudge has olive green covers faded at the edges and spine to brown. Some rubbing to corners and front fore-edges. As the spine has been rebacked under the original backstrip the binding is solid. Text is clean and fresh. Possible rain-stain to back boards and a splash mark to front paste-down & front free end page. Else in remarkably good condition. Price is for both volumes. Our rating system: 1. Fine; 2. Signed by Dickens shortly before his death A fine portrait boldly signed by Dickens at the foot; Edward Goodwyn Lewis's portrait of 1869 was the last major portrait of Dickens executed a year before his death. The existence of similar examples indicates Dickens signed a small number for presentation. Lewis 1827-1891 was known for his portraits of prominent Victorians as well as Biblical and Shakespearean subjects with works in many collections including the British Museum the National Portrait Gallery and the Folger Shakespeare Library. The original artwork for this portrait is now in Princeton. Hand-finished lithograph 25.5 x 34 cm in original mount 58 x 45.5 cm. Overmounted and presented in late 20th-century gilt frame with conservation acrylic glazing. A few spots to front of original mount lithograph taped into original mount on verso. The bibliographer's copy First US edition beating its competitors by a single day - it was published on 26 January 1847 and three rival editions were published on 27 January. This was the copy of the bibliographer Walter Smith with his pencilled ownership signature on the title page and is the copy photographed and described in his bibliography of Dickens. The Battle of Life is the fourth of Dickens's Christmas books. It was first published in Britain on 19 December 1846. Octavo. Original brown wrappers printed in black. Housed in custom black quarter morocco box. Recent bookplate of collector Peter Russell mounted to inside cover of box early signature to title page. Light soiling and peripheral wear to wrappers contents a little stained still a very good copy of this fragile publication. New York: Dewitt & Davenport T. L. McElrath & Co.; Harper & Brothers 1854. Competing American editions Both the first and second US editions of Hard Times the shortest but also arguably the most political of Dickens's novels as well as being the only novel set entirely outside of London. The novel was first published in Britain in Household Words from April to August 1854 and in book form on 7 August 1854. The novel was first published in the US by T. L. McElrath who paid $1500 for the advance sheets of the final parts of the UK edition on 8 August 1854. This copy is in Smith's binding variant B with the front wrapper also naming the published Dewitt & Davenport. The second US edition was published by Harper & Brothers a single day later on 9 August 1854. Harper was unwilling to pay for advance sheets and so used the T. L. McElrath edition to quickly typeset their edition and publish it the following day. The Harper edition was published at half the price and was designed to outcompete the former edition. Smith notes a contemporary newspaper reporting that this "entirely stopped the sale of McElrath's book robbed him of the profits of his enterprise and literally crushed the young rival out of existence" cited in Smith p. 328. 2 copies octavo. Original brown wrappers printed in black. Housed together in custom green quarter morocco box. Recent bookplate of collector Peter Russell mounted to inside cover of box. Wrappers a little worn the first edition with some reinforcement at extremities contents a little spotted second edition with some peripheral staining and minor fire damage to bottom fore corner. The original manuscript of An Appeal to the English People on Behalf of Italian Refugees in England.
1849. They seek a refuge here in England almost the only free land where they may set foot The original manuscript of an appeal on behalf of Italian refugees by a committee of Victorian notables which by its handwriting confirms Dickens as its principal author. The appeal was published in the English newspapers reprinted by Forster in the Examiner of 8 September 1849 and was also translated into Italian for Mazzini's Italia del Popolo. "But for the discovery of this manuscript the fact that Dickens wrote it might never have been revealed" The Dickensian. Despite its re-discovery in 1914 the manuscript has since been lost to modern scholarship. The immediate cause of the influx of Italian refugees was the defeat of the Republic army defending Rome from the French army in July 1849. Garibaldi withdrew from the city with 4000 troops and took temporary refuge in San Marino before he and his revolutionaries were forced into temporary exile. In England an Italian Appeal Committee was formed comprising several Members of Parliament together with Charles Dickens John Forster Douglas Jerrold Walter Savage Landor Frank Stone and W. M. Thackeray. Dickens already a friend of the Italian patriot Giuseppe Mazzini and a frequent visitor to Italy was the natural choice to write the appeal. Dickens wrote to Frank Stone on 22 August 1849 assuring him he would "do my best with the Refugee Statement" and that Stone should "rely on its being at least earnest and having a drop of heart's blood in it". On 26 August he wrote to James Stansfeld one of the two honorary secretaries of the appeal committee mentioning some "alterations" to the text. Besides making minor corrections during composition Dickens subsequently made additions in black ink distinct from his compositional blue ink. He sent the manuscript to William Greening 1799-1869 a founder of Bradbury and Evans. The original envelope signed by Dickens is bound at the back of the volume addressed "For Greening Messrs Bradbury and Evans". It is headed: "Please to make the additional corrections enclosed CD". There are differences between the manuscript and the published version. In the second paragraph for example Dickens originally appealed for "a compassionate relief" published as "a generous relief". He also reduces the size of the French army from "fifty thousand strong" to "forty thousand strong" the attack on More O'Ferrall was originally shorter and "The Exiles appeal through the Committee named above to Englishmen" becomes a slightly more distanced "The committee named above appeals in their behalf to Englishmen". These textual emendations were not reproduced in either the original published article or The Dickensian and are hitherto unknown. When the editors of the Pilgrim Edition of the Letters referred to the manuscript they relied on the published transcription in the absence of the original. The manuscript lacks the conclusion of the penultimate sentence and the last sentence mostly comprising names of the committee or banking details but is otherwise complete. When publicized in The Dickensian in 1914 the manuscript was in the possession of Walter T. Spencer 1863-1936 a London bookdealer with premises at 27 New Oxford Street specializing in Dickensiana. The location was next recorded in the same journal in 1917 by William Miller and T. W. Hill in an article on "Charles Dickens's Manuscripts" as remaining with "W. T. Spencer". The manuscript was acquired by a private collector in Lincolnshire probably in the 1950s and was bought by us from his family. We cannot currently trace any appearance of it within the book trade or at auction. 2 leaves 222 x 186 mm manuscript in blue and black ink with several corrections together with envelope including embossed "CD" design to flap and 5 leaves of calligraphic transcription in red black and blue ink bound in early 20th-century green morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe spine with raised bands spine and front cover lettered in gilt with additional gilt borders front cover with author's facsimile signature in gilt rear cover with author's lion couchant crest and "CD" in gilt ruled dentelles in gilt all edges gilt. Dickens was proud of Chuzzlewit: in a November 1843 letter he described it as "a hundred points immeasurably the best of my stories" Hartley p. 126. It was first published in monthly parts between January 1843 and July 1844 and is the last of Dickens's picaresque novels. Ackroyd Dickens's biographer believes it marked "a great change in Dickens's conception of moral characteristics. For the first time Dickens begins to explore the contradictions and difficulties of the contemporary human world; these are no longer figures defined by a single characteristic or animated by the wilful principle of a 'humour' but ones who are seen to change with the changing world to live and grow" Ackroyd p. 392. London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. The Foyle copy First edition in book form of "one of the greatest of all his works. also the first one to have an explicitly contemporary setting" ODNB from the library of William Foyle and in an attractive Samuel Tout binding. The novel was issued in monthly parts from September 1846 to March 1848 and in book form on completion. Dombey is further noted for containing "the first published example of a so-called dark plate. 'On the Dark Road' p. 547. The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process" Smith. The technique was later put to use for ten plates in Bleak House and eight in Little Dorrit. Although unmarked as such this copy comes from the collection of William Foyle 1883-1963 the co-founder of the eponymous chain of booksellers. Foyle's grandson acquired a substantial portion of the original collection at the landmark Foyle Library sale in 2000 including the present copy. From 1868 to 1879 Samuel Tout 1841-1902 bound books in Soho London. He then worked in Whitechapel with William Coward continuing on his own after 1880. Tout was also an early member of the staff of Karslake's Hampstead Bindery which opened in Charing Cross in 1898. Octavo 207 x 131 mm. Engraved frontispiece title page and 38 plates by Hablot Knight Browne Phiz. Late 19th-century half morocco by Tout spine lettered and ruled in gilt and with raised bands marbled paper sides and endpapers all edges gilt green silk bookmarker. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit.
London: Chapman and Hall 1866. The copy shared between his two youngest sons Association copy inscribed "H. F. Dickens and E. B. L. Dickens" by Henry Dickens on the front free endpaper of both volumes. Charles Dickens named his youngest sons Henry Fielding and Edward Bulwer Lytton after the novelists. An autograph letter from Henry responding to an enquiry about these volumes in 11 July 1907 is loosely inserted. The letter reads in part: "The two names are in my own handwriting. The volume forms one of an edition my brother and I had some volumes of which including this one I have missed for a long time past. Judging from the handwriting the signatures must have been written very many years ago. How the volumes came to leave our possession or to be sold I have not the very remotest idea". At this later point in time Henry additionally inscribed the vol. I frontispiece recto and the vol. II half-title "H. F. Dickens and E. B. L. Dickens" and then added a postscript to the letter stating "my writing does not seem to have altered very much after all". Sir Henry Fielding Dickens KC 1849-1933 was the longest-lived child of Charles Dickens and the most successful leading a distinguished career in law and serving as the Common Sergeant in the City of London. Sir Henry also served as life president of the Dickens Fellowship wrote Memoirs of My Father 1928 and raised money for the Red Cross by dressing up as Charles Dickens while reciting from his novels. Edward Bulwer Lytton Dickens 1852-1902 lived a contrasting life in the Australian outback his father providing him an agricultural education and then sending him to join his older brother Alfred in Australia in 1868. Edward later joined politics and represented Wilcannia in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Edward observed "Sons of great men are not usually as great as their fathers. You cannot get two Charles Dickens in one generation" Ackroyd p. 878. Even the illustrious Sir Henry was charged with failing the impossible task of living up to his father's great legacy. When a criminal he was sentencing told him "You ain't a patch on your father" Sir Henry retorted "I quite agree with you. You will now have 18 months in which to resume your studies" Recollections p. 280. This copy is a reprint from the Library Edition published in 22 volumes in 1858. Martin Chuzzlewit was first published in book form in 1844. 2 vols octavo. Engraved title page in vol. I engraved frontispieces and 37 plates by Phiz. Original red cloth spines lettered within gilt frames and decorated in blind covers panelled in blind yellow coated endpapers. Henry Dickens's inscription on vol. I frontispiece recto washed but legible; label remnant on front pastedown of vol. II. Restoration to spines repair to inner hinges and to nick on vol. II title page occasional foxing. The Works of Beaumont and Fletcher.
London: Edward Moxon 1840. Presentation copy from Charles Dickens Inscribed by Charles Dickens to a protégé in the publication year on the Volume I half-title "J. A. Overs from Charles Dickens 1st November 1840". John Overs a carpenter made Dickens's lion couchant bookplate in the same year. Dickens nurtured Overs's literary interests and later wrote the preface to his sole book Evenings of a Working Man 1844. Dickens wrote in his preface to Overs's book "it has been a pleasure to me to put a few books in his way" p. ix. Overs 1808-1844 first wrote to Dickens in January 1839 hoping to be published in Bentley's Miscellany though Dickens resigned his editorial role there soon after. Dickens initially warned Overs against neglecting his employment to pursue a literary career. However he was satisfied when Overs explained he wrote only in his leisure time both to further his education and to provide more for his wife and children. Dickens spent the next few years reading and revising Overs's writings often in person during their spare Sunday hours together. As Overs's health declined Dickens found him lighter employment at the Drury Lane theatre. Dickens later supported Overs's family following his death from tuberculosis at the age of 34. The scholar Sheila M. Smith suggested that Overs might have influenced Dickens's The Chimes 1844. "A working man of this kind goaded to such feelings would have aroused Dickens's sympathy at a period when the novelist was experiencing his most violent indignation about his country's poor. It is arguable that Overs's plight at least contributed to this violence. At the time that Dickens began The Chimes he must have had Overs very much in mind. Dickens's concern for Overs might very well have influenced his decision to make a working man a central character in The Chimes" pp. 211-12. This copy was later given from Overs's widow Amelia Overs née Horton 1808-1885 to their daughter Amelia "Emily" Elizabeth Jane Overs 1834-1902. The gift inscription on the title pages reads "Emily Vine the gift of her mother 1857". Emily married William Andrew Vine 1833-1899 in 1854. 2 vols octavo 237 x 150 mm. The book is in very good condition a fair amount of shelf rubbing some color loss with minor cracking on surface of spine in some spots color and some of the leather lost along the hinges. Gilt decorations and lettering on spine still look quite good with only minor color and fabric loss. The interior has a lot of foxing throughout and a couple tears near the top of the last few pages the text and images inside appear clean and clear otherwise. This appears to be the first edition in a full book format. Gads Hill Place Higham Kent: 3 June 1870. One of his final letters An autograph letter penned just six days before the author's death sent in apology and reading in full "Dear Sir In the hurry of saving the day's post for many letters the enclosed was left in my cheque book when I wrote to you. I am very sorry to have caused you trouble. Faithfully yours Charles Dickens." It is accompanied by the original envelope addressed in Dickens's hand to Thomas Wright of Regent's Park and dated 3 June 1870. Dickens previously wrote to Wright on 31 May to donate three guineas to a fund in support of the writer George Linnaeus Banks 1821-1881. Dickens realized a few days later he had overlooked to include the cheque. The scholar Graham Storey argues that the recipient is "probably" the prison philanthropist of Manchester 1789-1875 who Dickens discussed on the front page of the Household Words issue of 6 March 1852: "A worn but not a weary man of sixty-three who has for forty-seven years been weekly servant in a large iron foundry. Poor as he was - toiling as he did a modest man of humble origin with no power in the world to aid him but the wonderful spiritual power of an earnest will - Thomas Wright has found means in his little intervals of leisure to lead back with a gentle hand three hundred convicted criminals to virtue; to wipe the blot from their names and the blight from their prospects; to place them in honest homes supported by an honest livelihood". Dickens spent the last week of his life at Gads Hill working on his unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood 1870 until his death on 9 June 1870. Bound in beautiful full RED morocco with with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands gilt ruling to the front and rear panels To the upper board the title and a small gilt motif in gilt. Gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Bound in to the rear is the original cloth upper cover. Externally in good order with crisp stamping and the gilt bright. The binding strong and handsome with hinges firm and gutters intact. Some very light rubbing on hinges. Ends of spines a little darkened looks to have been slightly touched up at some point. Internally a few light spots to a handful of pages and the illustrations as good as we have seen. It remains largely bright throughout. Overall still a very good copy of an extremely scarce and popular book. 167p.p plus the publisher’s double-sided advertisement leaf. Four hand coloured plates and three black and white line steel engravings by Leech. Attractive checkered red and black endpapers. VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION. For the first time and also the last time Dickens decided to print not only the title-page but also the etchings in colour. "A Christmas Carol" is one of the "greatest Christmas books ever written". It was issued just before Christmas 1843 in an edition of 6000 copies. Up to Jan.3.1844 two of the three thousand copies of the second and third editions were sold. Of the first edition there are 3 different issues: Red & blue title-page dated 1843 / red & green title-page dated 1844/ and a few copies are said to exist with the red & blue title-page and the later date. The real first edition 1st.issue is the red and blue title-page printing of "Stave I" instead of Stave One. Written by Dickens during a period when the British were exploring and re-evaluating past Christmas traditions including carols and newer customs such as Christmas cards and Christmas trees. He was influenced by the experiences of his own youth and by the Christmas stories of other authors including Washington Irving. The novella captured the mid-Victorian revival of the Christmas holiday. Dickens acknowledged the influence of the modern Western observance of Christmas and in turn his novella would go on to later influence several aspects of Christmas traditions including family gatherings seasonal food and drink dancing games and a festive generosity of spirit. London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. Strikingly bound to incorporate a miniature First edition finely bound in an exquisite Cosway-style binding by Bayntun. Named after the famous Regency miniaturist Richard Cosway such elaborate bindings feature a delicate miniature portrait set under glass on the front cover. They have long been sought after by collectors as outstanding examples of the binder's craft. Cosway bindings were originally executed by Rivière & Son for Henry Sotheran employing Carolin Billin Currie as the miniaturist in the first decade of the 20th century. The Bayntun bindery which acquired Rivière in 1939 continued to bind books in the Cosway style until the late 20th century. This novel was Dickens's first in an explicitly contemporary setting. It also contains "the first published example of a so-called dark plate "On the Dark Road" p. 547. The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process" Smith. Dickens's publishers launched the Library Edition of the author's works in 1858. It soon ran into problems and was "a commercial failure" Parrott p. 11. It then "gained a new lease of life" Parrott p. 12 as the Illustrated Library Edition launched in 1861. This became "an attractive and desirable set of books which achieved acceptance and popularity on both sides of the Atlantic" Parrott p. 19. The original volumes were published until 1874. A new edition with reset type and larger pages was announced in 1873 and published until 1876. It was "bound in bottle-green cloth lettered in gilt and decorated in black". London: Chapman and Hall 1839. His third major novel First edition bound from the parts of one of Dickens's most politically pointed novels. Nicholas Nickleby was written at the end of a turbulent decade in which the Reform Act and Poor Law Amendment Act had led to widespread unemployment and depression and published in the year of the first Chartist uprising at Newport. Written after the widespread success of The Pickwick Papers and at the same time as Oliver Twist Dickens wanted to capitalize on the best aspect of both of these works - the comedy in Pickwick and the social criticism in Oliver. According to Dickens's biographer "he did not want to lose either his reputation as a topical and polemical novelist or his fame as a comic one. So in Nicholas Nickleby he devised a plot capacious enough to include both aspects of his genius" Ackroyd p. 254. The edition was issued in monthly parts from April 1838 to October 1839 with sheets issued in book form on completion. This is a copy bound from the parts with stab-holes. Provenance: William Frederick Fownes Tighe 1784-1878 with his contemporary ownership inscription to the title page and his bookplate to the front pastedown. The heraldic device of the Tighe family is in gilt on the top compartment of the spine identified by the British Armorial Bindings project at the University of Toronto accessible online. Tighe was first cousin once removed to the poet Mary Tighe and in 1825 married Louisa Maddelena daughter of Charles Lennox 4th duke of Richmond. Octavo 209 x 131 mm. Almost all the advertisements are present including the scarce "Lett's Diaries". This set also includes two additional adverts that are unrecorded in Hatton and Cleaver. Dickens's classic Bildungsroman is his most lightly disguised autobiographical fiction. In the preface to the 1867 edition Dickens called the novel his "favourite child" a sentiment shared by many readers: "With many lovers of the author's works David Copperfield ranks as the finest of his writings" Eckel p. 77. The novel has been adapted into films multiple times including most recently in 2019 starring Dev Patel. The Christmas numbers of Household Words and All the Year Round.
London: Chapman & Hall 1850-67. Dickensian Christmas tales A complete set of Dickens's seasonal offerings at his journals Household Words and All the Year Round comprising nine issues each. Writing "in company" Dickens composed the opening and closing pieces as a frame for stories supplied by his staff writers. The serials continued the tradition of Dickens's five Christmas books of the 1840s. The formula that Dickens used from 1852 to 1866 involved gathering a group of disparate literary individuals who would while away Christmas Eve by recounting various stories in the manner of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Dickens contributed many stories himself including "A Christmas Tree" "The Mortals in the House" and "The Ghost in Master B's Room". Among the other pieces are "No Thoroughfare" jointly by Dickens and Wilkie Collins and Elizabeth Gaskell's "The Ghost in the Garden Room" and "How the First Floor went to Crowley Castle". Dickens edited the papers consecutively from 1850 until his death in 1870. 18 parts octavo comprising 13 unbound parts and 5 wire-stitched parts in original blue wrappers all as issued. While the serialization was still in progress John Bradburn in New York published "Book the First/ The Cup and the Lip" in October 1864 in a cloth binding making his volume the first book printing anywhere. 317 pp. On the Title Page: "Our Mutual Friend./ By/ Charles Dickens/ New York:/ Published by John Bradburn/ successor to M. Doolady/ 49 Walker-Street/ 1864. The title faces the frontispiece and the copyright page is blank. Including the frontispiece I count 7 full-page plates. Original brown stamped cloth with a man with a walking stick at the top of the spine surrounded by the title and author in gilt. Lower on the spine is "Book First." Eldgewear with some loss especially at the bottom of the spine a small edge tear on one leaf with no text affected a surprisingly clean text without tanning or foxing Good. Rare in any condition. .
