Trade edition. Signed & inscribed by Guitry in March 1918 to Edmond Roze theatre impresario and producer of this play. An extraordinarily NICE ASSOCIATION for this play. Also offered for sale along with the inscribed French trade edition is a hardcover English Version Translated by H. Granville Barker and published by Putnam in 1921. 8vo green cloth gilt-stamped. Very good. The first performance of the play occurred at the Vaudeville Theatre in Paris in February 1918. It was translated into English and ran on Broadway during 1920 and 1921. The French version was later made into a film in 1951 written and directed by Guitry. The title character of the play is based on Jean-Gaspard Deburau who was a real mime in the 1830s and whose unforgettable character was at the center of the film LES ENFANTS DE PARADIS THE CHILDREN OF PARADISE. <br /> <br /> PLEASE NOTE that all our First Editions are also First Printings unless we specifically note otherwise. Illus. with 14 of 15 watercolors and 24 of 27 drawings. Plus one original drawing laid in. Folio. One of 23 copies with an original drawing 14 had original watercolors of a run of 1042. Lacking one folded leaf of four pages containing one watercolor and three drawings. Andre Dignimont 1891-1965 was a French painter draftsman decorator and book illustrator perhaps most famous as the last having illustrated the works of Colette P. ‎Working manuscript of DEBURAU 1918 with many additions and corrections by Guitry director Edmond Roze's copy‎

‎Hardcover. Very Good. Manuscript in ink with pictorial cover of a mime possibly by Guitry signed twice by Guitry but the bulk of the text almost certainly prepared by a professional copyist with dozens of corrections pencil notes additional dialog etc likely by Guitry & Roze. The working copy for Edmond Roze a theatrical impresario producer and director who staged this at his Roze's Theatre de Vaudeville in 1918. Enclosed is a sheet of blue paper 'Infinitment merci Sacha Guitry' some stains to its fore-edge and a pasted in long telegram from Marseille Guitry to Roze advising him that he is stuck in Marseille but that the play must go on without him etc. Ca. 150 pp bound in half red cloth and marbled boards. Guitry was a notable playwright and actor who then went on to an equally notable career in the cinema. This play is about a mime in the 1830s who falls in love. It was later redone as a movie in 1950 with Guitry as director. hardcover‎
