A la place de Jane Grey se trouve la figure de la liberté, représentée exactement dans la même position. Elle est vêtue sensiblement de la même manière, et a les yeux bandés aussi. Seul le bonnet phrygien a été ajouté dans la pl. Au lieu d’être soutenue par Sir John Brydges, premier baron Chandos, lieutenant de la tour au moment où Jane a été exécutée, la liberté est soutenue par le roi Louis-Philippe. Ce dernier porte également un grand manteau. Ses attributs ont été ajoutés, à ses pieds (parapluie et chapeau à cocarde tricolore). A dte de la composition se tient le bourreau, qui n’est autre, dans la pl., que Persil. Représenté dans la même attitude que le bourreau de Jane Grey, il s’appuie sur la hache qui va servir à sa décapitation. Il porte une petite scie en forme de poignard à la ceinture. Il est vêtu de l’habit de magistrat, sa toque est surmontée d’un crâne humain. A gche de la composition, on trouve, à la place des dames d’honneur de Jane, l’incarnation de la révolution de juillet 1830 (le col de sa robe porte les dates des Trois Glorieuses « 27. 28. 29 »), vue de dos et s’appuyant contre le pilier de la pièce en signe d’affliction, ainsi que l’incarnation du journal La « TRIBUN […] [TRIBUNE] », assise, évanouie et fermant les yeux. Ces deux figures féminines portent un bonnet phrygien. Le décor de palais au fond est sensiblement identique à celui du tableau de Delaroche.Personne / Personnage représenté:Persil, Jean-Charles; Louis-Philippe Ier, roi des Français

Given at the time of this publication Dickens was immersed in Oliver Twist & Nicholas Nickleby we feel confident in saying this booklet was an effort to captialize on his burgeoning fame as Boz. <br /> <br />A rather rare early 19th C. illustrated publication; at the time of cataloguing not found in any of the standard Dickens references not found on COPAC with OCLC listing just 3 institutional holdings of only 12 pages. CLARA IN BLUNDERLAND with: LOST IN BLUNDERLAND THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF CLARA.
London: Heinemann 1903. Two octavo volumes. Pictorial olive green cloth stamped in red and black. Frontispieces and illustrations by "S.R." i.e. Stafford Ransome. Cloth a bit rubbed and soiled with some pale stains to the image on the upper board of the second front free endsheet of second volume neatly excised small punctures/scrapes at toes of spine cat scratching otherwise good and sound. First edition of these parodies of ALICE. by the prolific journalist and miscellaneous writer written with the unspecified collaboration of M. H. Temple. Both are primarily political satires the product of frustrations about the Boer War and the British government of the time. Begbie went on to support pacifists and conscientious objection to the Great War and put himself out front with a vigorous defense of the reality of the supposed apparition of the Angel of Mons. The initial volume of this parody was so successful that by the time of the appearance of the second the first was in its tenth 'edition'. Heinemann hardcover books
