Aspin was a benefactor of the Old Library Trinity College and was a distinguished bibliophile and book dealer. 'La Mere Coupable' which translated to English as 'The Guilty Mother' is the third play in Beaumarchais' 'Figaro' trilogy. It was Beaumarchais' last play. This play takes place twenty years after the previous play in the trilogy. The plot of this play revolves around a night spent together by the Countess and Cherubin a few years before the beginning of this play. As a result the Countess tells Cherubin that they can never see each other again. The preceding plays in the 'Figaro' trilogy are 'Le Barbier de Seville' and 'Le Mariage de Figaro'. Pierre Beaumarchais was a French polymath being a revolutionary publisher spoy horticulturist watchmaker as well as many other pursuits. He was a supporter of American independence. Condition: Disbound. Externally the outer wraps are discoloured. Evidence of being previously bound. Loss to the tail of the title page not affecting text. Internally firmly bound. Paris, 1767 in-8, demi-reliure tardive (mi-19e), soigneusement restaurée avec conservation du dos. 2 pièces de titre cuir "Répertoire du théâtre français" //"Comédies"//"Beaumarchais", plats papier scrotel, tranches jaspées rouges, EUGENIE Drame en cinq Actes en prose, enrichi de figures en taille-douce, avec Un Essai sur le drame sérieux. A Paris, chez Merlin, 1767, 118p. Considéré comme l'édition originale, bien que Cordier présente une édition sans l'Essai sur le drame sérieux. LES DEUX AMIS, drame en cinq actes en prose, Chez la Veuve Duchesne / Chez Merlin, 1770, 156p. suivi de la partition pp. 157/163. Edition originale, en tous points conforme à l'exemplaire de Cordier. LE BARBIER DE SEVILLE comédie en quatre actes, 5e édition, Chez Ruault / La Veuve Duchesne, 1785, 132p. Cinquième édition. LE MARIAGE DE FIGARO comédie en cinq actes, Au Palais-Royal, Chez Ruault, 1785, 237p. Véritable EDITION ORIGINALE, la première citée dans la bibliographie de Cordier et parfaitement conforme aux caractéristiques de premier tirage. Il y précise que les tous premiers exemplaires ont paru sans figures, auxquels elles ont été ajoutées par la suite. Nôtre exemplaire possède les cinq planches sur papier fort, par St-Quentin et gravées pour les quatre premières par C.N. Malapeau, la dernière par Roi (où la Comtesse Rosina a la poitrine bien découverte). Cette édition contient : La Préface de l'auteur (suivie de "Caractères et habillements de la pièce"), au verso du faux-titre sous la liste des libraires dépositaires de l'ouvrage, l'Avis de l'Editeur et à la fin, après les Approbations (en dates des 28 février 1784 par Coqueley de Chaussepierre et du 21 mars 1784 par Bret, suivi du Permis d'imprimer et de représenter en date du 29 Mars 1784, par Lenoir), l'Achevé d'Imprimer du 28 Février 1785. Seule manque la mention " Avec les fig. de Malapeau (...) Sans les fig. de 5 à 10fr." citée sous l'achevé d'imprimer. (Sources : Bibliographie des oeuvres de Beaumarchais, Henri Cordier, A.
